Dragon Quest 7: Fragments of the Forgotten Past |OT| Roman numerals are hard

Man, school is so ridiculous right now. I have no idea when I will get a chance to start

If I'm too busy to play a remake of my favorite PS1 game, shit must be really out of control

Hope everyone has a good DQ experience regardless!

My Amazon order says that it won't arrive until Tuesday the 20th. I'm curious does Amazon no longer do same day even if you order with two day prime?

Did you preorder the game before the 13th or just buy it now? I'd imagine that preorders have priority right now, they may have even sold out of their first shipment (fingers crossed because that would be excellent news for Dragon Quest). The Release Day delivery upgrade period seems to no longer be eligible for this game, unfortunately.

If you did preorder it before this week and you're sure you didn't do "no rush" to get a credit, I'd get in contact with an Amazon rep and see if they can do anything to compensate you for the delay.

Did you change your billing card or address on the order? I've had that screw up my pre-orders on amazon

This too, we got new cards from the bank between preorders going up and release date, so I've predictably been having a mild anxiety attack all week about that screwing everything up even though I updated the payment method ASAP.

FWIW, I've had mine preordered from Amazon since last November (!) and I still haven't gotten a shipment notification. Still says it should ship by Friday, but who knows.

Is it? I'm just 5 hours or so into Cold Steel 1 and it's not really doing much for me. It kind of reminds me of Persona 4, only with much less interesting style and characters.

Does it suddenly get better a couple chapters in?

The characters of Cold Steel are much more developed then in Persona 4 it just takes longer to actually happen. I know a lot of people are turned off by the tropes that the characters fall under but they have much more depth then you might imagine and on top of that the world and its NPCs are more fleshed out then any other RPG I've ever played. As Aeana said, the second game is much better then the first but you HAVE to play the first game to understand even the beginning moments of the second.

I've got this preordered at Best Buy for pickup this Friday! Can't wait to finally play this, as its the only main Dragon Quest title I haven't played at all.

The start of the game is literally one hour of running and backtracking, I'm scared to check how much worse it was on PS1.
Just finished the mine with the colored gems, I really missed that Dragon Quest feeling :)

What are monster classes ?

Do you transform into the monsters ??

It sounds confusing to me.

I'm trying to avoid spoilers so I can't check it out, what I read doesn't give proper answers.

It's crazy how long the wait has been for this game to be released in English but it's finally here! Funny enough DQ7 is the only one in the series I haven't beaten, looking forward to all the improvements!

I am so totally stealing that turn of phrase.

So the job system changes your stats, your appearance, and as you rank up in the job, you learn abilities, either globally or class-specific. In the original, every ability was global.

Monster classes are one-time use scrolls you can get either from rare drops or otherwise, that grant the character you use them on the option to be that monster as their job. In the original version, if you got them to max rank your character would turn into the monster while you were assigned as the job. Monster classes would usually have utility or status effect abilities that were found throughout the normal jobs, and in some cases some very powerful abilities.

In the remake, they have an additional function of teaching high-level spells globally, as now the normal second-tier (hybrid) classes teach you high level spells, but they're only usable while you're that class.

Well, on some positive news, the game has some decent buzz apparently at our local game store at Uni. I was kind of surprised when I went to see if they would sell me an early copy... they didn't. ;_;

Ok so let me get this straight :

You get scrolls (how ? Defeating monsters ? random drops ? Can get bosses ? is it only monsters or "enemies", as in humanoids too, if there are any in the game ?), than you have to max rank them ?

You said they were one use only, how do you max rank them then ? Do you need to earn multiple scrolls to max a monster ? Can you teach a same spell to multiple characters ?

If you transform into the monster, I take it it changes your appearance ? How long does it last ? For one battle ?

Thanks, I'm pretty interested in the game, I pre ordered it, I'm trying to learn more about the system without spoiling myself.

It's really simple. You can get monster hearts (the scrolls you guys mention) through 3 methods: 1. very rare monster drop, you get the specific heart from that monster. 2. sometimes you find them in treasure chests. 3. you can earn some at the casino.

Hearts are single-use. Once a character uses it that monster class is always available to him, you can change classes and go back. The character will always look like the monster, except when walking around in towns and during story stuff. You only need more hearts of the same monster if you want multiple characters to have that class.

Once you become the monster class you can level it (up to 8 times). New levels give you new skills you learn permanently, even if you switch to another class the skills remain. That's the advantage of using monster classes. The con of using them is that they're slow to level up. You can stop leveling before maxing it at level 8 if you don't want the skill or for whatever other reason.

There is an advantage to maxing monster classes. By maxing certain combinations of classes you can automatically unlock new more advanced monster classes without using hearts. I wouldn't worry about it however, I went through the whole game just using hearts I got from the 3 methods above.

Same here, preordered both 7 and 8 the day Amazon put them up

Going on a business trip to Dallas for a week, taking this with me. I don't play many JRPGs, but DQ has always stuck a chord with me. :)

I bought this game to to show my support. I dont have the time to put in another 100hours in an RPG.

What a great PS1 game though.

Great OT Aeana. Last DQ I played extensively was VIII on the PS2, and I've always wanted to play this one. Friday can't come soon enough.

Copy shipped! And strangely, UPS is telling me it'll arrive early. I had a shipment of movies/books that were due to release Tuesday arrive on Monday this week, too.

Can't say I'll complain though.

I've waited SO long for this... and now I don't think I have the time to play it :'(
I still haven't even started Monster Hunter Generations or Fire Emblem Fates :'(
My backlog is ridiculous :'(

Never played this and V is one of my favourite games ever so I'm super hyped to finally get the chance!

The opening took forever and I already know they trimmed it down for the remake. I disliked the amount of backtracking this early in the fame, I hope it is not indicative of every vignette.

I get why people sound worried about the game being really long, but I like the idea of having a portable RPG that I can just play for an hour every now and then and have it last for several months.

Especially given that DQ in particular always has these little vignettes that turns these games into many little chapters. It makes them quite satisfying to play even in shorter bursts.

But I'm the type of player the player who doesn't feel any rush to finish games anyways. I love RPGs for mood and mechanics, not necessarily for epic endings.

How is the story and characters? I loved DQ8 and it's in my top 3 RPGs. I thought 9 was decent. I played about 10 hours of DW7 on the ps1 and thought it was alright but hated the old school menu interface with Talk, Cast, Item etc.

I'm not sure if I can push myself through a 100 hour RPG without good characters and story.

DQ7 has some of the most emotional and well written stories in the series, and some of the funnest characters. If you loved VIII you should love VII imo. VII isn't as plot-focused or character-focused as VIII, but the overall storytelling and writing surpass it.

DQIX was the first DQ game that I finished. I throughly enjoyed and was curious enough to pre-order 7 and 8 remakes. Very curious how they are compared to 9.

I agree. The last thing anyone should feel when playing a DQ game is rushed.

Portable DQ7 is going to be the dream. :)
