Dragon Quest X |OT| Import Solution Found

I registered with Nikkei to read this article just to find out that it's only available to owners of a payed account. Do you know what the article says in detail and what the reasoning for the gambling accusation is?

I know Pachinko is only legal because you can't win money with it, just lose it. I guess some other reason must apply if DQX were to be considered illegal gambling.

Edit: I usually don't go to server 1 as it's always crowded but as was explained to me players gamble there by their own rules. I guess winning of virtual goods is part of that gambling. Interesting but an understandable reasoning in light of the gatcha ruling. I wonder how SE could even prevent players from doing this 'illegal' gambling.

It's the author overextending this thought to the fact that there's grey market RMT going on. Portion that was on the 2ch threads:

He's arguing that /random rolling combined with RMT auctions creates a case for violation of gambling laws. You can see the major fail in his logic in the second paragraph: he's assuming gold to the tune of tens of thousands are being handled through these bets (when have you ever seen any of these things run bets much larger than 1000?), and further saying that these may be linked to RMT gangs!

I mean, you want to see any gold farmers you're likely to find them hunting あくま神官 or whomever drops まほうの鎧 recipes or any other rare item, more than you will doing bets that are barely profitable over time, if any. Not to mention the in-game repercussion of getting blacklisted by a huge number of players that will no longer 'hear' you when you want to gather people up for missions.

4gamer ran an article explaining this better if you want to read through that.

BTW, how are people doing regarding story quests so far? I got the 6th key emblem and
regained human form (which sucks)
, now trying to level to 45 before I try and take on the next story boss. Gone through the entire plot solo so far, might try and keep at it.

I see, so he's even linking it to RMT. In any case, if this should be considered criminal activity it's the individuals doing it who will be charged with the crime, not SE. You don't blame people who sell real world dice, the state providing money or a landlord providing the location if all of these are used for gambling. That's the responsibility of the person using these commodities illegally.

The argument he poses is that Square's presenting an environment where gambling can occur. You'd think his argument falls apart considering Yahoo Auctions or any other place where the gold-RM trading occurs is outside SqEx's jurisdiction. Saw a couple folks joke about starting gambling bets with the last digit of the post time of the author's twitter account -- by his logic, he would have to delete his account and post history or else he would be providing a place where illegal gambling could occur.

Well, being an RPG based on dice throws and chance DQ at its base is all gambling. It's not just the casino and some alchemist professions but the battle system itself that is very gambling like. But illegal variants of intended usage can occur anywhere; as said before, any normal die or card set can be used for illegal gambling.

I once read that in some places yakuza exchange the pachinko balls you can win with money again turning it into illegal gambling. Really anything can be adapted to cross the line that the intended variant chose to avoid (for legal reasons, obviously).

Just finished up the Pukulipo quest line and got the
white key emblem
. My favourite story section so far, though I've only finished a couple of the others. Thought the cinema scenes were really well done. Pretty surprising considering the overall freakishness of the Circus town and what not.

Was thinking about doing the Elf emblem next. What level is appropriate for that quest? I'm 27 at the moment.

so, of the few people playing here...has anyone "finished" the game?

My knowledge of MMORPGs is only second-hand, so I have no idea if one even can, but this being DQ, I assume there is a "story" one can bring to an end.

Anyone done that yet?

I just did that yesterday too. That area with the door was really pretty -- this game could look so good on just slightly more capable hardware...

I got the first elf key emblem around 30 I think? Wasn't too hard though. The road to the second one is way harder and I'm not sure I could even get it now (currently level 38).

Unrelated: got mini medals three days in a row now. Luck streak!

I've beaten all 10 key emblem quests so far, still haven't gotten to the final boss.

The second Pukulipo key quest is great story-wise (and a piece of cake if you keep マホトーン up). Pretty much all the 2nd key quests seem to revolve around family ties, must be a way of appealing to both the kids and the parents that'll likely be playing on the same account. The second dwarf key quest boss was said to be the 2nd toughest boss there, but with proper sumo management he was actually pretty easy to take down. I did go down about 4 times, but considering he uses a skill that hits you for ~300 you can't help that. Working now on getting Monk and Warrior passive HP upgrades so I can run around as a mage w/ 200 HP. With Tiger Claw monk is going to be a breeeeze at 40k+exp/hr, warrior... might take a while.

Servers are still very crowded btw. One thing you notice though is that people are concentrated on the 'popular' mobs. You can tell a lot of people only look at guide websites for info and don't think for themselves, as Pink Momons are beyond overcapacity (to the point where you might as well not go there). Head to areas that aren't mentioned in some of the more popular strategy sites and you're getting fame points left and right as you gain still-respectable amounts of EXP.

That area reminded me a lot of a similar one in Vagrant Story. The cut-scenes often spruce up the graphics a little with detailed shadows and lighting, those kids of effects with high resolution textures and AA could make the game look great overall.

I'll try elves next, only have the two emblems thus far, don't know what I've been doing with these 65 hours of playtime!

Maaaaaan the Thieves' Key quest is a bitch. Killed several of those
Crystal Hands
while
cursed
but still no luck. And there's usually only enough time to take on one, maybe two at a time before
the curse wears off

Anyone already done this? Wonder if I'm missing something obvious...

EDIT: Woooooot, got it, finally!

Beat the "final boss" over the weekend.
Obviously he's not the true final boss, and at the end of the credits there's a "to be continued" instead of "the end."
Ended up being a lot easier than I expected -- since the bosses don't unleash a flurry of special attacks or anything long as you keep the heals up battles go by w/o much of a hitch. Also helps that HP passives keep you from getting one-shotted as a mage.

Definitely can see how this is soloable (and it has been done numerous times already). The better equipped and passives filled people become, the better support characters will become and the easier it'll be to do so.

You have to deal the finishing blow yourself. Not exactly obvious from the quest details (and a lot of sites fail to mention it), so it can get harder than it really should be. Getting the status ailment from Kangaroos west of Glenn castle and then warping right back to where the target mobs are is the least frustrating way to go about this quest.

Wow, congrats - what level/class were you? And curious if you'd leveled up other classes first as well? (If so, which?)

I'm a level 42 warrior at the moment; still haven't tried any other classes but I'll probably take a weekend or two to try and raise them all to lv 20 or so at least once I hit like lv 45-ish in warrior.

Love this game's art direction so much - really hope they put the added processing power of the Wii U to good use because this game could be crazy gorgeous if only the tech were a little more capable.

Walking through the desert earlier on my way to a volcano, sand blowing everywhere, huge, menacing silhouette looming in the distance...had to stop for a minute and just stare. You can't really tell in this pic, sadly, but it looked really nice in-game and you can just tell it would look amazing with nicer hardware.

I was a 50BLM. party was BLM/WHM/WHM/WAR (in DQ classes, but you get the point).

When it boils down to it you'll want to level other classes based on the passives/etc you want to get. Monk's hp+40 passive is huge, but you do sacrifice ability to get weapon skills so I got claw skills off thief first. As I mentioned previously Tiger Claw is ridiculously powerful once you get +strength passives from WAR and accessories (it's in line w/ other weapons' skills otherwise), so it made leveling pretty easy. I'm working on getting the HP+30 passive from WAR now, chugging along at lv37... liberally using Genkidamas and letting other people use my character to gain me EXP. If I keep playing after that I'll probably just level my alts so that they bring back more exp/gold per day. Farming for cash in this game seems to be getting harder by the day, what w/ the insane deflation going on.

BTW, if you haven't already make sure you add enough points to ゆうかん that you get Lost Attack. Tons of early-build WARs kicking themselves that they maxed their weapon stats, making them of little use in any sort of endgame situation.

Hmm, thanks for the info! Yeah the skill system didn't really "click" for me until around level 30 or so, but since then I've focused exclusively on Courage and I did just recently get Lost Attack/Morale Masher. I'm not gonna be able to get the warrior HP bonus but I can get the second ATK and DEF +5 bonuses at least. Will have to wait for respecs or whatever they implement, I guess...

You should avoid those enemies at your current level. I recommend using the shiraberu command. Kanari tsuyoi is already too hard in most cases unless you can rush them down (your MP won't hold for more than a few battles though). Te wo dasanai hou ga ii means exactly that.

Should I be trying this quest-line at this stage? Or should I be off leveling up a little more?

Are you soloing? It all depends on who you bring. I was level 28 (thief) when we beat the boss there but most of the damage was done by a higher level (around 30) wizard and we had two monks with us, one 29 and one well beyond 30.

Try the boss for how much damage you can do, how fast you get killed and how much MP restoring items you'd need to bring. Then weigh funds needed against your willingness to spend time leveling.

If you want an easy victory, then yes, you need to level. 30 should be pretty safe.

the 2nd half of the Impress Games long interview gave us some insight into 1.1 updates:

* no casino, no coliseum
* respecs will be quest-based, first category to respec is free
* no new classes
* most weapons will get buffed, some that are considered too strong may be nerfed
* housing?
* more pt bonuses/friend bonuses
* level cap not changing

Wonder how much they can add to the game just by basically housing and basic balancing.

There'll also be a lv50 quest that, if passed, raises the level cap to lv55.

Plots of land cost 500,000 gold to start (LOL!) - and the price will drop by 5,000 gold four times a day until eventually the price gets down to 20,000 gold (24 days later).

So basically, rich people get their pick of where they want to live first.

Housing kits are 10,000 gold.

More deets being unveiled daily here: http://hiroba.dqx.jp/sc/topics/detail/5d1df96034b8e5d2028bd58c8b43510b0eb4a1a8/

(Update: some more deets just posted here: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=42345777)

Saw the Wii U version today, BTW - looked pretty nice. No major enhancements, just hi-res, clean, smooth. Menus and text and such is smaller now, shadows are more realistic, they're re-doing all the cutscenes and stuff in HD, etc. Can switch back and forth to the Wii U Game Pad at any point, too.

Wii U beta will start soon after launch (but not necessarily day 1) - but the nice thing is, progress WILL carry over to the final game this time, unlike the Wii beta.

Yeah it was expensive enough for me about €110 in total. Word is you can pick them up pretty cheap second-hand, so maybe if you had someone to send you one directly it'd be cheaper than going through importers.

€110 for a Wii U?

Just posted some new info about the update in the other thread. Continually updating that thread has made me want to try it out once it's localized on Wii U, heh.

More details from another stage event:

Ranger:
- Has an ability that lets you choose not to fight enemies, instead seeing them off. (do enemies in DQX aggro?)
- Can charm enemies.
- Use "Steal" during the Ranger job quest.

Paladin:
- Use "Protection" during the Paladin job quest.

Housing:
- 1000 blocks = 100,000 houses.

Upcoming Update:
- The ability to re-spec will be added.
- Need to finish a level 40 requirement quest to re-spec.
- Will be provided an item to re-spec upon completion. Resets points from one skill.
- Have to buy additional re-spec items after using the first. Each will cost 10k gold.
- A quest will be added that'll expand inventory size from 25 to 50.
- Receive this quest from an NPC on Rakkaran Gourakushima (娯楽島ラッカラン) at level 35+.
- Letters will no longer be common items, and will be stored in a separate area.
- A letter entry will be added to the Item command. Letters will be separated by three categories here: Sent letters, Written letters, and Received letters. 100 letters can be stored in each of these three. Can also re-write letters.
- Will not need to complete a quest for these new letter features.
- Might hold an in-game festival in Astoltia (アストルティア) alongside the "Puu-chan" event scheduled in October.

Very welcome change! I had to throw away so many letters and have now resorted to leaving them at the post office to only read them there. No idea how many letters you can leave there though.

More update details:

Time for some more new DQX info. As I don't play Dragon Quest X and am not terribly familiar with the series' terminology, please forgive any odd translations.

Upcoming update:

- Tensei Monsters will be in the new update.
- These monsters will be found alongside regular monsters, the only difference being that they only rarely appear.
- Name and color of these monsters will slightly change to differentiate from regular monsters.
- Example screenshot that was shown showcased a shiny gold monster named Golden Cone (ゴールデンコーン) appearing alongside an Al-mi'raj when players entered into battle with one.
- Tensei Monsters are slightly stronger than regular monsters.
- Less than 10 types of Tensei Monsters will show up in this particular update.

- Hard mode boss fights will be added.
- Previously defeated bosses during the story will appear simultaneously, and they will all be stronger than they originally were.
- Intended for high level players. Supposedly stronger than even the last boss.
- Will display how long it took to defeat a hard mode boss after battle with one.

- Lost Metal Slimes and Metal Brothers Slimes might show up in this update.
- Will apear alongside other monsters in high-level areas.
- Tombrero Hat and Pink Mommon Hat will be added as equipment.

Ranger:
- Bow skill called "Samidare Uchi" (Myriad Shot).
- This is the same skill that the "Arrow Imp" monster uses.
- Boomerang skill called "Burning Bird".
- This skill is an area attack that transforms your boomerang into a firebird that assaults enemies.

Also, the Wii U version is tentatively scheduled for a spring 2013 release.

Thanks. I also realized ゴールデンコーン probably isn't Golden Cone either, but rather a play on the word unicorn, so Goldencorn.

Yes, that's what it is. It's an Almiraj with a golden horn.

messed me up something terrible. Seems as if AI guys won't quite cut it in this fight. Might go wait outside the boss door and see if anyone wants to fight it out with me.

Currently my guy is a level 30 Warrior, feel like I should probably do some vocation stuff after I get this emblem. Haven't tried any other classes... What's a good secondary vocation for a warrior?

Is anyone playing this with a homebrew-modded US Wii? DQX doesn't load using the TinyLoad region free app.

Mimas mentions something that could be helpful in the English Play Guide over on the Dragon's Den.

[You will need] a Japanese Wii, or a Wii modified to have the region, online channel, and probably language switched to Japanese. The homebrew channel alone does not cut it because you need access to the Japanese online store as well as being able to start the game from the USB device instead of a disk. This means that you have to remove your account on the Wii Ware channel, which will delete any games you downloaded from it as well. If you have an older Wii model you can use Homebrew with Any Region Changer. If you have a newer Wii Saigan had success with his model LU70 Wii with Mod Mii created by XFlak.

Hope that helps.

You have to convert the Wii to Japanese, it's the only way. You also need to convert the shop channel to access the Japanese store if you want to pay, which means losing your US account (and all of your purchases on it) forever. This is actually exactly what I did.

I would recommend getting a cheap used Wii and doing whatever you need to to that one if you're very attached to your US purchases.

He ended up doing exactly what you recommended in the second paragraph... by buying my old Japanese Wii fort ¥6000. ;)

Thanks for the replies everyone! That's one more for DQX.

The date for the big update has been announced on the hiroba site and it's the 9th of this month. My favorite additions:

-Letters now can be kept as separate items.
-You can get one tiny medal for every enemy type you defeated at least 100 of! Lots of new medal items added too.
-Required EXP for next level now visible from the chat page of the plus button menu, which is a lot faster to access than the Status menu (now I can easily check my EXP during and inbetween battles in genki time rush!).

Edit: Unfavorite change: Tiger Claw now costs 5 MP instead of 3. :(

Yeah, really excited for the update. Thinking about taking Wed. off from work, haha.

I won't be able to afford a house for quite some time (only have about 55k banked right now), but I'm not too concerned; main thing I want from this update is to start my Paladin. :D Gaaaaah, can't wait!

Yeah housing seems to be a long ways off for me too. Haven't even really started crafting because I messed up the magic lantern stuff and now I can't seem to use any other crafting items, or the lantern for that matter! I'm sure I'm missing something...

Anyway I've 5000 gold in the bank so that only leves 95 more thousand I need!

What really sucks is that they're basically killing all the half-decent money making schemes available now:

*selling weapons for profit to NPCs is dead now. You could make 540G out of 2 iron + 3 silver, now it'll be half that. Along w/ this death blow will come the decrease of price of iron and silver, which means THF parties hitting up ガチャコッコ for ~10K/hr will be dead.

*ザキ success rate will be random now and will be lowered for enemies way above your rank. Killing Scarab Kings was great money (52G/pop + whatever your thf got, runs to ~10K/hr) and great exp, priests will now be a shitty healer again.

The former's really going to screw with people, since raising craft skills will suddenly become super difficult. I got 30 weaponsmithing and clothcrafting with some profit even, from this point on people are gonna be suffering for any levelups.

I'm not too worried about Tiger Claw, picked up a Skill Doesn't Use MP 14% bracelet on the cheap which should help keep the ability effective. Least they didn't nerf the skill's power or anything
