Dragon's Crown - E3 2013 trailer

Just want to say, it's a good thing that Sony manage to put out an entire video for the game. Essentially the same thing but creates more awareness due to the game's name in this video.

Good find, and it beats having to find a specific segment of a 3-hour video.

Question for Vita owners. A lot of people have asked if Dragon's Crown is crossplay, and Atlus has said it is not crossplay, but what does that mean? That men aren't allowed to cosplay as the Sorceress? Or does it mean you can't use the Vita as a controller when playing PS3, or that you can only do Vita/PS3 co-op by playing online, or that you can't do Vita/PS3 co-op at all?

I understand crossbuy (which this isn't) and cross-save (which this is), but I'm curious if this "no crossplay" thing means the Vita-only owners and PS3-only owners can't play together. I don't have a Vita, so this is new to me.

It's not cross buy , you don't get 2 copies of the game when you buy it (1 for each system) and you can't have 1 player on a vita while another is on ps3 playing the same game.

There's something I'm not 100% clear on though, I had thought the ps3 version had local and online co-op but the vita was local only... seems that might not be the case ?

It looks like they both get local and online, but the Vita local is only with other Vitas.

That's exactly it, unfortunately. There's separate servers for the PS3 and Vita, and I'm guessing they don't see each other locally either. Probably the netcode is too incompatible.

So, if you buy both versions, you can pass your save from one to the other, (and possibly to a friend's PS3 too?), but you can't straight away play with someone in a different system. Which is a shame, as that would be amazing.

By the way, I was surprised as all hell to hear the Atlus guys saying "it's not crossplay, which sucks" O_o. Hope he didn't get into trouble for being so candid...

Yet they posted this image:

Suggesting they can play together.

It's not cross-play at all.

PS3s can play with PS3s, and Vitas can play with Vitas. Save data is transferable to the other platform.

Their way of phrasing it was awkward. And it doesn't make a whole lot of sense why they couldn't play together if they're both already going through PSN.

The cursor (controlled with the right analog) is part of the looting system. You use it to point areas for the thief NPC to explore or loot; it's also how you open secret passages. Indeed, on the Vita you can just touch the screen (although perhaps you can use the right analog as well?).
By the way, that bit about the thief is a LIFESAVER. Anyone who's played DDTOD/DDSOM knows what I mean; behold the deadliest enemy in Mystara, the silver coin. :P I love that the Archer picks up and reuses arrows straight away just by walking over them, though. EDIT: After seeign the gameplay videos, it seems that the thief doesn't loot stuff on the ground; you do pick money yourself, but just by walking over it. As long as my character doesn't derp and go "ooohh, shiny" in the middle of a fight, I'm good. It also seems like handheld items like bombs are picked up using the Triangle button, which I assume is not otherwise used for attacking. In any case, you can see footage of the thief unlocking a chest as directed by the cursor in one of the videos.

That makes sense. Thank you.

Atlus release 2 more videos.

Event Scenes

Siliconera offers more information on narration voice.

We previously reported that Dragon’s Crown, will have downloadable content that will allow players to customize the narration voice with any of the game’s six playable characters. The Japanese version will also feature an optional English narration. Atlus shares more info, along with a peek at a short event movie.

The default Japanese narrator is the voice of Takashi Taniguchi, who recently passed away last year shortly after finishing the recording for Dragon’s Crown. In addition, there will also be an English narration option. The voices of the six playable characters can be downloaded through the PSN Store, but they can also be unlocked by meeting certain conditions in-game, for those of you who’d rather find a way to do it on your own.

Do want, but for no more than $30. Am I the only one who is pissed that they announced this game for $30 then bumped to price up to $50?

"Do want, but for no more than $30. Am I the only one who is pissed that they announced this game for $30 then bumped to price up to $50?"

Yes, because they didn't announce it for 30$, Ignition did and also made many other promises that the dev team weren't aware of. Atlus is publishing this now, an entirely different company.

It IS super awkward and confusing. It does seems as if whoever came up with that phrase spent hours thinking of the way to most imply cross play while actually saying the opposite. Anyone reading that would assume cross play.

It's particularly shocking the 180º on that strategy when the Atlus guy in the interview/gameplay showcase actively and unprovokedly said "it's not cross-play, which sucks.". O_o

Oh, we REALLY have an Atlus person here! I guess this is a time as good as any for thanking you and your company for saving RPGs while other companies (which shall remain nameless) do their best to turn them into Hollywood movies. And, of course, for saving Princess Crown, and bringing Dragon Crown to all of us. Really, I have a deep fondness for Atlus, I wish all of you the best. :)

Echoing this sentiment. Atlus is top 5 in my gaming developers/publishers; in no order:
Capcom
Platinum Games
Nintendo
Atlus
VanillaWare

Sting is probably 6th.

All glory goes to awesome fans. It's what makes doing what we do so great.

The time for being outraged was a year and two months ago. Now? this is just whining.

Wow, it was more than a year ago that Atlus inherited DC? I've been waiting for this game for like two years now...
But yeah, seconded. This game is worth 50$ and more.

Holy crap, replace Capcom (current Capcom has nothing to do with golden age Capcom IMHO) with Double Fine and Monolith Soft, and that's my list too.

and if you put out Odin Sphere for vita i'll double that too lol
vanilla/atlus games are easy double dipper buys without question!

I'd especially double dip on PC/Steam. Just suggestin'.

I think I would be up for both of these, heh. For the record I just purchased today Chronicles of Mystara on Steam to quench the DC-thirst.

But it's region-free, so... just import?

Man, I haven't imported from the US since the PS2 era :S. Is NCSX still around/still decent?

Current Capcom has made both of my most-played games this generation, Monster Hunter and Marvel vs. Capcom 3. They still make great stuff even with their common and severe missteps. I should play Psychonauts sometime, I hear good things about it. Monolith Soft has only made one worthwhile game as far as I know. I need at least 3 great games to consider a developer. Otherwise it would be like saying Nine Inch Nails is my favorite band because I like Closer.

I feel as though I'll be the only guy choosing a male avatar for my play-through. Well, probably not the "only" one, but definitely of the minority. I will admit, the "assets" of the women can be difficult to ignore...

AHEM! Now where was I? Oh yes.

As for who I'll play as, I haven't decided. It'll either be the Fighter or Wizard. I absolutely love the detail on Fighter with every piece of his armor shifting as he moves, but the Wizard looks to be so much fun to play as [ALL OF THAT DESTRUCTION!!].

By the way atlusprime, I wanted to take the time [while you're here] to thank you for your presence on GAF. As you undoubtedly see, you have quite a die-hard fans of Atlus here, myself being one of them. :)

I actually have a PS3 and Vita version of Dragon's Crown pre-ordered. I regret nothing!

The Wizard and Sorceress play pretty similarly, so they can both be engines of destruction in the right hands. Once you get some points in Levitation, you can hop around and avoid being mauled when you're playing without other characters to protect you from stab-happy monsters. And if you're using AI helpers, they won't complain about all the clouds of fireballs obscuring your vision of the enemies.

[reference: I was the guy demoing the Wizard during E3]

I'd love to get info about the button layout for the game. Both the Sorceress and the Wizard can teleport, but how does the game know where to teleport you? Does it cost MP? Etc. Do we have any info about how many skill points there are total vs. how many skill points one needs to max out a character?

Oh man I have to stop, too many questions...

Teleport will move you in the direction you're holding, and costs a paltry amount of MP (20, I think?). So, while you shouldn't pull a Nightcrawler and *bamf* all over the place, it's a very serviceable escape plan.

Button info is pretty straightforward - X = jump, Square = normal attack, O = power attack R1 = dodge. The specifics change for each character tho - and that's too much to write out.

Teleport doesn't cost anything. Everyone has an evade move bound to R2 - the Wizard's is just more like Nightcrawler than anyone else's. So, yes, you can *bamf* all over the place, but you're not going to be doing anyone any good while you're doing it. The default direction is directly behind you, but you can hold the left stick to go in any direction.

Unless you're thinking of a different teleporting move than I am, atlusprime? I remember the Sorceress just kind of hopping instead of vanishing when she evades.

EDIT: Okay, we were thinking along similar lines. The magic classes can actually teleport all over the place if you hold the evade button, which costs MP while everybody else just skips away.

STOP BROWSING GAF AND GET BACK TO WORK, SLACKER!
Time spent browsing twitter during a coffee run doesn't count as "work"! :P

I know that (for whatever reason) Atlus doesn't put out PSN avatars for their games, but please think about selling a few for Dragon's Crown. :-)

Monolith Soft (well, the more prominent people in it) also made Xenogears, which, flawed and all (and as my username might imply) is one of my favorite RPGs and games of all time. Still, I completely get what you're saying; it's just that Xenoblade is just so amazing that for me, it counts as those three games. :D

Double Fine is more of an acquired taste and not for everyone (a lot of people disliked Brütal Legend, for example, while I loved it), but one thing that's undeniable is that every one of their games is different. Not just different to the rest of their games, but different in some way to anything in the market. They're the most innovative western company in my opinion right now.

STOP BROWSING GAF AND GET BACK TO WORK, SLACKER!

Doesn't this fall into PR (and therefore, work)? A lot of people read GAF. :)

I wanted to make another question. It seems to me that some of the spells (the more "special move-like" consume mana, while others (the "larger" ones, selected via the ring menu and having a book icon) have limited uses. Is that right?

It's not netcode. The machines themselves are clocked at different speeds making it almost impossible to crossplay. They have to sync perfectly for a good online experience.

A dev would have to spend a lot of time to make it work.

My wife and I watched the E3 trailer and she asked to watch it again! This game looks totally amazing because it's going to scratch an itch that most games don't touch. It looks pretty deep and seems full of content. Day One for sure!

Best thing is it's Co-op too, hope you'll have a fun experience with her.
