Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

Reynard escort popped back up..so at level 40 I said it's finally time. That was a great one as well.
Took me a good hour and a half that lasted well into night. Unfortunately getting past the thieves' fortress at night with an escort was impossible with the magi using aoe spells, so I just portcrystaled and went back to GS to sleep. The area up here is VERY cool, very different than the rest of the world.

I just don't understand some of the criticisms from the other thread about the world being empty or dull. The sense of exploring a giant wilderness far from a settlement is such a great part of the gameplay. When you see the Great Wall in the distance it's like holy shit, I'm gonna go there. I also love how the world isn't just ice area immediately next to desert area immediately next to forest area. It's great design.

Any tips for Daimon second form? Shooting him with bow would take ages. And my pawns are worthless bugs. Even some gaffer pawn with 3000+ attack won't helping much.

Really? They should do pretty good damage at that high of attack.

There are tips all over this thread if you go back and dig through it a bit, but basically, what worked for me is

1) bring demon's periapts (in multiples of 4, purchasable from Fournival in Gran Soren). These increase your magic damage by 20% each. Up to 4 stack at a time. Magick Archer's Sixfold Bolt (Ninefold if you found an upgrade) with 4 demon's periapts will do a lot of damage to him.

2) for a regular bow, use blast arrows and conqueror's periapts. The blast arrows will help you mainly by keeping him in a perpetual stagger state.

Yeah Stunandstab pawn Moka. Just running like an idiot doing nothing. GO command doesn't work. She was good with ordinary enemies though. It's AI to blame.
Thanks for advice. Fournival is in prison lol. Is there a way to get him out? Or is he dead?

Try my pawn he has 3400 attack:p Give him some periapts and he'll crap on him:p

Anyhow ranger would be the easiest class, just use periapts and tenfold arrow and you'll do massive damage
shoot the belly head until it makes him flinch

I went to the new island at level 54, probably too low.

I made it to a room with a chained up Cyclops which got lose and wrecked my crew. We ran away. I noticed the bridges above, but did not go too high. also there was a back exit in some poisonous water, but it looked like a dead end, so I left. We made it to a large room with harpies and a .. the thing that turns you to stone? Anyhow two rent-a-pawns died and I killed it with just my pawn. This also looked like a dead end. In the courtyard the rest of the door were locked. Should I just leave until I can kill the cyclops, or is there an area I'm missing?

I went to change my pawns, both were near useless. I managed to hire a level 84 one for free, why was it free considering my level? Is this a friend's pawn or something?

I recently turned my main guy into a sorcerer. My gear sucks (magic ~500), does that go up with my vocation level or just gear? Since I'm in the post game, where should I go to gain levels and gear if not the new island?

Sorry for all the questions.

Asalam still hates me.

I started a quest that tells me to defeat a cyclops underneath a fort, but when I get to the proving grounds there's no cyclops. What gives?

I'm still not a fan of the HUD and the quest log. I'm just having a hard time figuring out where to go without putting myself in a situation im underleveled for.

Started my DA game fresh off, i do not seem to see any of the "special" items that i got from DLC in my game. Am i?

My storage only had the stuff from having a DD original save. Am i missing something?
Should i delete my save and restart?

I wasn't having a very good time so I decided to jump on his belly face and wail on him with Thousand Kisses. Used 4 Conqueror's Periapts and killed him in about 45 seconds. Level 150 Ranger. If you have a perm-enchant weapon you can also use 4 Demon's Periapts alongside the Conqueror's. If you get him down fast enough he'll go into vortex right away, then you stagger him, he goes into shield mode, you stagger him, he becomes vulnerable, you kill him. You should stay attached to him the whole fight if at all possible.

You aren't really supposed to kill the cyclops for a while, that's why it's tied up.

You need a key that is at the top of the cyclops room, iirc.

It's most likely a friends pawn.

Stats go up based on what vocation you are when you level. So, your pawn will now be gaining in magic attack. You gain more stats from 1-100, then it drops off considerably from 101+.

It's up to you where you want to level. I would recommend killing drakes to get their tears, and farming everfall for a while.

Doh! I saw my pawn was on his back, so I attacked. I was near the top, so maybe I should have just went all the way up. I think I'l just do some leveling elsewhere and come back. I have yet to touch Everfall.

It's all for sale from the Black Cat.

I did my BBI hard mode 1.0 run at level 150-160ish, and didn't have much issues with the mobs. My main is a mystic knight and had gear from UR Dragon, while my healer mage pawn also had UR Dragon items. Some of the later 1.0 hard mode bosses are difficult, but nothing impossible (rez'd maybe two or three times via wakestone on Daimon 1.0 hard mode). Its the most fun doing BBI at these levels in hard mode, since you level up incredibly fast. Maybe the only other non BBI boss that gives this much XP via grinding, is UR Dragon offline version.

BBI Hard mode 2.0 is certainly possible at level 180ish (I was around this level after just 1 run of BBI), but if you don't want to skip (aka just run by them, and head to the next loading area's door; these doors can be opened at any time after having defeated that chamber boss in your 1.0 run of BBI) the later chamber mobs/bosses you want to be level 200. Even at level 200, some of the later bosses and mobs will certainly be a challenge, even for the most dedicated and hardcore Dragons Dogma player. You might have to spend some wakestones on them, and will certainly spend wakestones on Daimon 2.0 hard mode (i used maybe 25-30)

I havent tried BBI on my PS3 character (while my PS3 character is around level 40...my xbox character was already level 150ish for Dark Arisen), so I can't say what levels are acceptable for normal mode BBI runs. I'm sure others in this thread can detail.

Ok, so I I take it being in the level 60 to 70 range for BBI for hard mode would be considered under leveled for most people?

Might be a dumb question but, how do i remove a pawn from my party? I want to try out some quests with only 2 pawns.

Go to the rift, talk to them, release them. Or purposely kill them and don't revive.

So there are moments in games where it's possible to feel like an idiot.

I've poured a lot of time flipping between sorcerer, warrior, and assassin in this game. I've put in more than 120+ hours at this point, which is really uncommon for me and I've only JUST now realized after all this time I can equip both daggers and shields at the same time. Holy crap. What!? How did I not notice this.
vOKwDC0.jpg

Has anyone tried this out before? What are some good skills to use? My immediate reaction of shock is because this allows for both Gale Harness AND Showdown to be cast and active at the same time. Combine that with Hundred Kisses and this should be ludicrous.

Is there any way to make enemies appear on the mini map, like maybe as red dots or something? I hear a pawn yell kill them so I spun around see just pawns on the road and maybe a traveller. Do a 360 and see nothing then out of nowhere enemies appear and I'm not even sure which is a traveller and an enemy.

It's bedlam. And not the good kind.

Finally started this up. Really bummed when I saw that you had to use your old character for hard mode and it kept the levels so I restarted from scratch and switched to hard. Loving it so far, even at level 25 and guts armor everything is still 1-2 shotting me lol, feels like dark souls

Just started post-game, Everfall is a lot more fun than I thought it would be. Fuck Hellhounds though. Gonna start going through Soulflayer Canyon and Bluemoon Tower soon! Hire my pawn pls ;_;

I had always assumed daggers operated like great swords. That since the item is occupying both hands I couldn't equip a shield. This is blowing my mind haha.

You would think so, wouldn't you? Personally it feels like a bit of an awkward combination to me, and I could never do without a bow as an assassin.

I feel so under powered... why do i remember buying the dLC for vanilla and having weapons and clothing out the gate.... i could be wrong it's been awhile

You remember right. If you ported and directly continued your old vanilla save you'd still have all that gear in storage, but if you started over fresh in DA all the gear is for sale.

... That's one thing I really like about this game.

The game really isn't all that difficult to begin with, and adding mobs to the mini map would take away any element of surprise.

Edit: like the first time a chimera came out of no where and tried to behead me...yeah, that was awesome.

You'll want swift caste, Enhanced response and Showdown. Mobility like whoa ... and all from a shield. Helps immensely for position work especially with a sword. Masterful Kill kind of eliminates the need for shields ;)

Does anyone here have an Assassin's Ring for the sword skills?

Does Enhanced Response work on larger enemies like Masterful Kill? I feel like I might end up preferring a free launch and grab into Hundred Kisses, if that's the case.

So I'm walking along in BBI when all of the sudden...

"Undead arisen!" OK NP I've got Ascalon plus level 3 fire buff. BAM out of nowhere comes death then right as he spawns the screen morphs. Here comes an elder ogre, great...

Use a wakestone?

The hardest room in all of BBI for a sorcerer is the room in the last stratum where there are several goblin shamans on platforms and the only way to get to them is to climb ladders. Their magic is being perpetually cast so they won't permit you to climb the ladders and your ranged pawns won't do shit to stop them. I basically just said "fuck it" and ran. The arena where you have to fight a drake, wyrm, and cursed dragon was child's play compared to those stupid goblins.

It does. There is no damage output from the skill itself but it will almost always flip you out and up far enough to clear you of any danger.. add Eminence aug to improve your air attack damage and it can make a brutal combo.

Of course, if you find any of the assassin skill rings escape onslaught gets an upgrade to shirking offense and becomes brutal as all hell. Combine this with the Tempest Harnest and you can output insane damage.

I usually use the daggers like a batman utility belt. Masterful Kill, Tempest Harnest and invisibility. Just handy shit for a wide variety of stuff. Since i found that assassins band for the dagger skills i rock both upgraded skills (gale harness and escape onslaught) and then masterful kill of course. Really fantastic spread of skills.

again tho ... does anyone know what bracket or set or vocation i need to be to get the assassin ring to pop (other than an assassin .. of course)

Thanks for the heads up. I'm going to take a stab at the shield/dagger combo. I'm curious about swapping Masterful Kill with Spiderbite, and seeing how well that skill works. I'm on hard and it feels like my character is made of glass, so any opportunity to stagger would be a hugely helpful.

I WISH I could find some assassin oriented rings. I've got my pawn set to a Ranger and every ring I've found so far has been for Magick Archers. It's driving me crazy haha.

I have an Assassin ring that improves Dire Gouge and Showdown. It works great for me, especially with the opportunism augment.

Activate Crackdown, jump on the enemy, Deadly Gouge for a bit and they die.

EDIT: Also, has anyone else achieved 100% fire resist from gear? It's awesome! I can just walk around through a wyrm's meteors, they don't bother me one bit

Uhg see... i want the assassin ring with Dire Gouge and the Powder Blast skills on it... perfect for my sword man.

Of course whatever works for you will be the best so you should work with everything and see what you like .. but masterful kill is an amazing skill that remains helpful through out the entire game. It's effective against every size and every level of enemy you might fight. I would call it essential if your rolling assassin and daggers.

Spider bite is good... especially if you aug out to increase your poison damage to crazy lengths... but undead things, cursed animals and stuff like golems or constructs will take measly damage from it. Flying things will be almost impossible to hit until you get your timing perfect and the stagger effect will only really happen with human sized enemies. It's definitely the most damaging skill in the dagger set.

Try escape onslaught/spider bite combined with the gale harness... it speeds up your attacks and skill usage as well so you can spam stuff like 5fold into a machine gun like fire rate.

Thanks! I'll keep playing with the skills. I really, really like Masterful Kill, it's just that it's kind of risk/reward heavy. Considering how easily my character gets whomped if I put myself in a position to make it useful and fail I'm tempted to move away from it a bit and see how it works for me.

I just realized raising my shield actually cancels out of the Hundred Kisses animation. This is awesome. I can cancel out of Hundred Kisses and hop immediately into Masterful Kill if I want to go that route. Part of the problem I was having was getting in close with HK, and then not having enough time to counter an attack with MK because the animation took so long to finish. The shield fixes that problem without having to assign the reset skill.

EDIT: This might also help for MK since you can execute the animation out of the block, and I think the block might come back up again after the skill is done. This is great since I can maintain a guard and not have to worry quite so much about flubbing MK. At least I hope so. Can't wait to try this out hahah.

Oh and woops, sorry for the double post.

If anything, grabbing the grimoire quest from Stefan (Stefen?) essentially takes you back down south as well, so knocking out all the new Cassardis quests plus grimoire plus maybe an escort can be an amazing adventure.

I have one with dire gouge and something else. I got it by purifying as fighter/fighter. You'll get a mix of items though, from fighter to warrior to MK to assassin.

Only 25 hours into this game, i'm almost ready to call it one of my favorites of the generation. Not only do i think it's incredibly fun, the best adjective i could use to describe this game is exciting.

What's quite funny is, I bought the original around the time of release and played it for a short while, but wasn't really feeling it. I cast it aside and forgot all about it, until the Dark Arisen OT was created. The enthusiasm on Neogaf, coupled with the GT video review and some nifty trailers, pushed me over the edge. I'm quite often fickle with movies and games and have regularly needed to give things a second go and i'm really glad that happened here.

How are you guys buying Demon's Periapts from Fournival post-game? The guards attack you and everyone runs away - Fournival is nowhere to be seen and I spared him in the trial and everything.

Sorry for the stupid question guys, but I'm now level 23 and still using the same Strider equipment (stilettos) I bought towards the start of the game. Are there any other outpost shops I should be looking for, or am I forced to progress the story? Ogres are kicking my ass.
I stopped story missions after
Everfall
because it autofailed some of my side missions, making me question wanting to move forward with the story too fast.

Caxton in GS will sell better gear, or the black cat. Otherwise, heading northwest will take you to some areas with good loot in chests.

As for the quests, if you're a completionist, I really recommend using a guide like
http://www.gamefaqs.com/ps3/626515-dragons-dogma/faqs/64617
you don't have to spoil the quests, but what it does is basically list when the quests appear and when they can no longer be done. Knowing that at least gives you a good barometer as to what you can/can't do.

The beginning is a little cruel because if you don't clean up the quests before the hydra/pawn guild stuff you lose them. The quests after have a bit of a larger window.

I bought everything I could from Caxton and upgraded them to level 3 ages ago :) The Black Cat is way too expensive for only marginally better (or sometimes worse) equipment.
