Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

Level 148 in this video. Entire party getting killed in one swipe by Death, who keeps stalking you and showing up at certain points until you ultimately defeat him. It's a cumulative damage battle. Plenty of other strong bosses as well.

Death will one hit you with its scythe regardless of your health. I'm sure if people know the proper tactic, they'll be able to handle it even at lower levels.

If early reports are true, I might be skipping this entry. The Assassin augments Bloodlust and Autonomy might have been nerfed into the ground (70% --> 20%).

Of course, as it should be. But my point is that the area looks to have some challenging encounters for levels well over 50, regardless. Based on what I am hearing and seeing anyway.

That's the pettiest reasoning ever. Those augments are overpowered in vanilla, and are rightly modified for the greater good of the game.

As they damn well should.

Come at me.
Really? You really agree with going from 70% to 20%?

I can understand the decision to lower their effectiveness, but this supposed change just relegates them into uselessness. Why would you give up your pawns for a paltry 20% gain? The Bloodlust nerf I don't really care about, but Autonomy supported my favorite play style.

Jeez, this is sounding like a really nice upgrade to the base game. If I didn't have so many other games to play I'd certainly be picking this up. Perhaps later during the Summer.

I think 30% sounds like an okay number.

I don't care for the concept of an augment that makes you stronger without pawns than you would be with them. I understand the appeal, but I feel it goes against the spirit of the game. That's just my personal opinion. Assassin has always been a massively over-powered class in my view. Not that balance is really a concern in this game.

I agree with what you are saying, I'm also one of those people that found solo play appealing so the severity of the change is what most concerns me. The Autonomy reduction just comes across as plain lazy on Capcom's part.

@Kyoufu
What do you mean won't die so easily? Everything dies easily when you reach a higher level. Balance does not seem to be at the top of Capcom's list of priorities.

I mean Blackbitter Isle might actually be challenging now, even for Autonomy Assassins.

If balance wasn't a priority then there wouldn't be so many nerfs already along with Magick Archers getting the buffs they've needed. Well done Capcom.

Yeah, I always kind of hated Bloodlust and Autonomy. For a game that focuses so heavily on the pawn system and the dangers of venturing out at night having a pair of augments that turned wandering around all alone in the darkness into easy mode was a bit silly.

I admittedly used them anyhow because they were completely broken, but I don't mind seeing them nerfed in the slightest.

I totally get the appeal of a solo playthrough and would like to do it myself someday, but I feel those augments should be geared more towards giving you a fighting chance out in the wilderness, not arbitrarily making you godlike. Ideally a solo playthrough should be more challenging than a playthrough with 3 pawns.

Honestly even with bloodlust and autonomy nerf, Assassin still cannot die due to liquid vims and eating mass amounts of mushrooms or food of choice. I know it hurts most solo builds in other classes but an increase in solo difficulty isn't too bad of an idea since the games balance is skewed at higher levels. Invisibility made it so the toughest fights were a joke.

Did anyone test to see if it still instant god mode? I think they could have implemented it much better. I know Fighter has a skill that grants super armor, so why not have invisibility be something that nulls damage but you still feel knockback and status effects. That way you can get knocked out due to stamina loss on knockdown and make it you can't always be on top of an enemy doing dps 24/7.

I wonder if Masterful Kill works against that scythe swipe. If it still works on all melee attacks then that might be a free boss fight for Assassins. Hell, that move even worked on meteors.

I'm jealous of your Tuesday release dates. :(

Apparently the dl will be available after midnight, not with the weekly update. Either way I can't play it till Weds but it'll be nice to have it set up early tomorrow.

I really am looking forward to getting this in however long it takes to get here from the UK. Luckily the arrival date shouldn't be far off from my final exam so I'll be able to play the crud outta this.

So this is the game that allows you to only have one character right?
Correct, but you can always make new ones on different accounts so it's not like the original Wii or a Vita/3DS game here.

Hmmm, I probably should've started a game on my other account, the one I used for cheating Dark Souls.

With creating characters on alt accounts, do the online functions in DD require XBL gold? Or does the pawn system not count as "multiplayer"?

Yes, that's shitty.

You can however copy your save file to a usb stick, then delete the save file to create a new character on the same profile.

XBL Gold is not required for online functions.

The whole one save slot per account thing is something I really wish they'd changed for Dark Arisen. I'm sure they've got their reasons, but damn are the workarounds a pain in the ass.

In the end I just embraced the fundamental transience of the digital age and deleted my old character sans backup every time I felt like starting over.

So does the game mostly take place at night and/or in caves? As much of a night owl as I am, I sort of prefer daytime in games.

It's a mix. Lots of open fields during the day/night cycle and dungeons that can be a little dark but nothing the Lantern can't handle.

It's open world with a day/night cycle. It literally takes place wherever and whenever you want it to take place :)

There are dungeons but in the vanilla game they're not very common. The Dark Arisen bonus stuff (Bitterblack Isle) is mostly a dungeon crawl though.

Thanks guys, I think my body is ready. Screw the backlog.

Sorry if this has been asked before but I can't find it in here or on the PSN. I know at some point when I pre-ordered it they said it would be available at 12:01am but what I don't remember is if that was pacific or if it's whatever timezone I live (eastern...).

Anyone know?

Me too. And night in this game is more dangerous so I always tried to sleep to avoid night especially early on when you're less powerful. But it's a mix of both. And I'm happy to report there aren't many caves/dungeons. I prefer exploring worlds and going on "journeys" throug the land in most RPG adventure games. I'm not a big dungeon guy.

Its a mix just like others have said, but this REALLY drives home the old JRPG standard of "dont go out at night". Some games have enemies that are just a little more powerful, but this one makes you really weary of the dark.

Especially during escort quests...and then all of a sudden you hear the low growl and see the gleaming eyes of a Chimera through the darkness.

Question: Why preorder digital goods? I don't really understand what the benefit is to you. You don't get to pre-download it on psn, right?

It was purely for convenience in this case. I had a free 10 mins now so that in the morning I had 2 less clicks to do to get it. That's it. I apparently got some theme and ring dlc with it but I didn't even know those existed till I hit confirm. No big reason for it though other than any digital extras.

The ability to sleep is always good. It should definitely help in the beginning. I'm definitely with you with liking to explore worlds and going on journeys.

You just sold me on the night time aspect, at least after I level up a bit. Sounds exciting!

Well, I didn't know either.

Excited for this to arrive Wednesday. So glad to ditch the screen tearing...holy smokes it was bad on 360.

Is the screen tearing officially gone, or are you going with the PS3 version?

If the 360 definitely doesn't have screen tearing, and runs better, I might have to go with it.

Can you play vanilla DD with having DA installed?

I guess what I'm asking is that the save file - is it copied and convertered (thus leaving the vanilla DD save file intact) or is the file itself modified and can only be used by DA?

I have a level 135-ish Ranger pawn with a bow that gives a 5x exp bonus multiplier when she kills stuff. Should help anyone who wants to fly through the levels a bit.

Anyone who wants to use her, send a friend request to me @ wild_whiskey (PS3)

I never understood the appeal of using autonomy. The pawns are basically the whole central hinge of the storyline and what the game is about gameplay-wise as well. Removing them kind of destroys what they're trying to accomplish from several angles.

I'm not "happy" that it's been nerfed, but I agree that it needed to be.

I never used it once, I had way too much fun using pawns. *shrug*
