Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen |OT| deep down darkness

Did it have an icon next to its name that looks like a gift with a cross through it? That's a pawn from vanilla DD that you can't exchange items with (compatibility issues with DA). That, or you accidentally hired a computer pawn.

Oh yeah, that's it. That icon with the red x was definitely there. =\

I consider it a blessing, really. Tells you who is actively playing and who hasn't played in a year. It's no fun rating/gifting pawns if the owner's never going to receive them, IMO.

Paying for 3 star enhancements? Waste of money when the cursed-dragon can DF items from 0 stars at an absurd rate.

Yeah ...good luck with the timing of the online UR-Dragon!

The max chance for the offline is 30% at four stars per item.

Or, I could be wrong. Did something change with DA offline

Soloing ur dragon for gold and he just flew off :( Do I need to rest for x days or what? I had him on half hp.
Can't you just exit the door and come back ? That what i did 5 times to bring him down the first time. (offline version )

It is kind of disappointing given its status as the expansion that requires rebuying the game for though. For $40 I'd have liked more variety even with the original game included, honestly it sort of came off as being like a poor man's Demon's Souls, though I guess the poor man would actually get Demon's Souls cheaper now. Still enjoyed it though even if it got absurd near the end, especially for the second run.

Not disapointing for me ..what matter to me is not the room but the amounts of ennemy + battle scenario the content can produce so that i'm not bored.i don't care that they recycle rooms , since each time i open a door i'm not knowing what kind of ennemy setup i'll have to face except in fixed locations.
This is what i care most actually ..battle variety , not a new area for the sake of a new area.
This afternoon i thought i was in know territory when suddenly a violet dragon came and totally added itself to the current battle. even if i've visited this room several times i'm glad things are different each time

The pawns a ranger now anyway, so as Parn said, daggers wouldn't do him much good anyway mwahaha.
Well, I imagine it'd still be useful, but his posts are a reason for me to consider changing my Pawn to Strider then my Arisen to Ranger (nevermind that I'd been abusing the fuck out of blast arrows and need to get the bow dragon forged anyway.)

Combine these with how offline Ur-dragon is a great way to farm for money, and it doesn't really matter too much to blow the money on 3-staring. Unless you meant the actual cursed dragons will buff from 0 stars, and it DOES seem that once you clear BBI once you can farm them absurdly easily, they just kept respawning in the room the first chained Gorecyclops was in each time I left.

Admittedly Dragon's Dogma IS kind of Diablo-esque in that regard, it's more about what items you can get at that point in the game and the enemies you have to take on, rather than just exploring like it can be for Dark Souls. I'd have still liked more variety though, it's not like the Everfall which was basically a treat at the end and a way to keep playing.

Thanks man!
I wasn't aware of the cursed-dragon's zero forge ability!

I'm not actually sure myself, I don't recall getting any equipment buffed from 0 myself but as it's easy to farm cursed dragons it's worth giving a shot at least at 1 star.

Wow ur dragon is horrible design.
If you climb on his back the camera points upwards from below, so all you can see is his belly while you are on top, when you are on the legs or neck his body also blocks the view constantly.
If you press up to climb up and the camera swings around at the same time you stop moving up but start moving down or left, so poorly done, he even got stuck on terrain a few times while flying.
The fight itself is so fucking tedious as well, a massive low point in an otherwise consistently fun game

I've had him on half (well a fifth of) a lifebar for 3 days now and can't find the last heart...

Finally found it on the tip of his tail.

Trying to shoot the fast moving spots with a controller and the framerate that often drops in the single digits on this boss, how on earth did that awful shit make it through QA

Common places the last heart is usually the tail or the wings. Attack anywhere that has purple blood.

Just added my pawn (Gemma) to the PSN list. BBI cleared out my rift crystals, and I haven't had anyone hire her while playing DA. Trying to get the inclinations just right, and I read somewhere in this thread that it's better for a mage to be a scather/mitigator as opposed to medicant, since they'll heal everyone no matter what. Also, I shouldn't teach her the higher versions of spells because they take too long to cast? I want her to be helpful! :p

You heard right.

I'd add that high level spells can be quite useful on a sorcerer pawn if you have other sorcerers in the party, but only in that one instance.

So I just recently played the demo for the original game, and I really liked it. My question is, are all the new changes to the Dark Arisen campaign present in the original? So if I want to play the best version of the original I should pick this up?

I love the SOTC-style monster grabbing. Going about my business when a gryphon swoops in and continues to sweep in and out, getting a sprint going and latching onto it while it treads in the air for a moment, so exciting.

Do you get to make a new pawn in NG+? I didn't realize the benefit of not upgrading spells for my sorcerer pawn the first time around.

That sounds awesome! What vocation are you playing with again? Was it assassin?
I never heard of masterful kill.....it sounds like I need to check it out.

Yup, dagger-wielding Assassin (with occasional bow use when necessary). Masterful Kill, as someone stated, is a Rank 9 Assassin skill. It counter attacks like 85-90% of everything in the game for a ton of damage.

I checked the original post and couldn't see anything, so simple question - is there a beginners FAQ for the game?

I reinstalled the original to see if I could get into it before committing to the expansion, and whilst the game is definitely appealing its also utterly confusing in every respect. I understand I shouldn't be worried about developing my character 'wrong', and thankfully I see there's an appearance change item in the game but starting tips for a complete beginner would be neat.

(Starting as a strider seems a lot more fun as a Mage - will probably change over to Mage once I have a few levels under my belt. Dagger combat seems a lot of fun!)

There's no FAQ, but really you don't need one.

SO just entered post dragon.
Stupid tentacle monster so not prepared for entering Evervall.
Lucky is still had some anti petrify potions stocked up from Cockatrice fight.

Any good strategies for Death?
Make sure you have 100% sleep resistance, and pop 4x atk/matk periapts the second you see him. Wail on him with whatever quick or strong attacks you have, trying to avoid anything that leaves you open for too long. For some classes, regular attacks are good enough. The only strategy required is simply to back off when you see him reeling for the scythe swing (and maybe to watch out for nearby enemies that might still be fighting you). He always seems to run away after around one bar of his life is depleted. Then go find a rift stone since most pawns will have likely died from the skirmish no matter what you did, lol.

Ill list some basic things:

Difficulty

-when you fight the saurians ( lizards with spears) in the well in cassardis, attack their tails, that fight is a difficulty spike in very early game but cutting off the tail makes it easy enough, most new players die here

-if you see bandits with shields early in the game (you'll meet 2 groups of these at some point early in the game), you don't have to fight them... they are very high level and can kill you in one combo, just run if you have to, you can come back a few levels later to kill them

-when you have to catch a thief in cassardis, just wait at the door of the inn , he'll have to come there to exit town, hit him once then grab him, if he escapes don't chase he'll come back
This quest can be very frustrating otherwise

Pawns and skills

-get yourself and your pawn to rank 5 fighter vocation asap (you can change vocation at lvl 10) and learn and equip the sinew augment, it allows you to carry 20kg more without weight penalty, it's a big convenience!

-when you hire a mage pawn make sure he has halidom and anodyne:p (dispel and heal)
It's also nice when pawns you hire have sinew (most players have it on their pawn, some don't) for the carry weight

-the guardian inclination for pawns is terrible, even for tanks and even if you are ranged , it causes the pawn to just stay near you which means enemies fight near you and the idiot pawn will refuse to fight until you get close.
Teach your pawns scather or mitigator (scather = attack strongest enemy, mitigator = attack weakest)

-give your pawn a pickaxe and a lantern, he'll mine for you (mine nodes are easy to miss) and will use the lantern in the dark.

-mage and sorcerer pawns get interupted if they get hit, some of their spells have long casttimes, if they are constantly being hit they are completely useless, so keep them somewhat safe

-if you play any class that can use daggers, get the roll ability when you unlock it, it's an excellent ability to avoid damage

-augments work for all classes (but you have to unlock them on the appropriate class first, skills can only be equipped on the class(es) that can use them

Quests

-check the quest boards near cassardis, in the encampment where you got your first pawn and in grand soren every time the main story progresses, you'll get new quests there and they provide you with a good bit of gold

-don't bother farming or backtracking to complete board quests, they are just kill quests and you'll eventually complete them naturally while following the story quests, this isn't world of warcraft you don't have to kill ten boars here to level up or unlock new quests

-do not ever let escort npcs die, reload your game if they do, if they die you can't use them anymore and can't get their follow up quests

-don't do the escort quest for the innkeeper unless you want him to be your waifu... it'll be a big inconvenience post game if you do that as well!

Bookmark this and read it when you get to grand soren, it'll save you a lot of gold

-make a forgery of chamberlain's affidavid (it's in fournier's house), you need two for two different quests

-finish your sidequests (not board quests) before you escort the hydra head to grand soren, else you'll miss out on some important quest chains I think

-finish your sidequests (not board quests) before you do the wyrm hunt quests from ser maximilian, when you do his quests you lose access to some other quests

-finish your sidequests (not board quests) before you go meet the duke or you'll lose access to some, you can look up the duke's quest to know which ones when the time comes

-dress your male chars up in women's garments (from the black cat in grand soren) when you do the mysterious tome quest at the female bandit camp, else they'll attack you.

General stuff

-enhanting gear lowers its weight which is very useful

-when you eventually get the wyrmking's ring in a quest, do not hand it in to the npc, make a forgery at the black cat and keep the original, that ring speeds up casting by 15 percent when it's in your inventory.

-when you hand in the gold idol to a store npc later in the game, make a forgery and keep the forgery (hand in the real one), the forgery will provide you with the 30 percent store discount ,if you don't have a forgery and hand in the original then you'll no longer get that huge discount!
That's all the stuff I wish I'd known when playing through the game myself.

-mushrooms are great (though not the poisonous ones:p) , they are a good way to get stamina back in a fight when you need it in a pinch, you can stock up at stores or find them in the world

-on a long quest give some of your material items to your pawns, they can carry weight as well, if you carry everything you'll be heavy and lose stamina faster and move slowly

I had the same feeling at first: utterly confusing and complex. It's actually way simpler once you get past the intro of the game, which in my mind lasted until I reached Gran Soren, the big city of the game.

Once you get there, you have a clearer understanding of what you're supposed to do and you finally gain access to everything you need:

-an inn to rest and deposit your loot

-merchants who sell stuff, buy your loot and modify your gear

-the ability to change your class and learn skills

Most of these are found around the plaza just at the entrance of the city.

As for not worrying about developing your character wrong, that's true: you don't spend points in stats ala Dark Souls. You purchase upgrades based on your vocation:

-skills (the actual attacks and spells you can use with your weapons)

-augments (passive skills such as increasing your defense by 30, or your stamina by 100).

Skills can be used only by their corresponding vocation (if you start as a strider and buy bow attacks, then switch to mystic kinght - a vocation who doesn't use bows - you can't use the bow skills anymore).
Augments, on the contrary, are shared between vocations. Every augment you bought and used as a strider are still accessible even if you switch to another vocation.

The stats themselves (your stamina, health, strength, etc.) automatically increase with the level of your character, and your gear improves the stats (armors increase your defense, weapons increase your strength).

Other than that, it plays a lot like Skyrim: you go on quests, kill monsters, grab loot, sell loot, get money, buy better stuff, rince, repeat.

edit: plus everything SneakyStephan said

Got an influx of new players I see! If you're in the 20's range on PS3 I'll be adding you and using your pawns.

Use ensnare if you're a strider. Instant win.

I felt like this with a lot of the early quests as strider lol. Kill two seabirds? Sure! pop pop..try that shit as a fighter without the dlc ring for insta burst strike =/

This game deserves a way bigger thread tbh :(

This game seriously needs every fantasy rpg player out there in it.

How many here are playing on 360? Just hit lvl 20 and my pawn has not been used once. Do you have to wait to lvl up before people really start using your pawns? Thanks

A fighter can throw foreign knives at the birds.

I NEVER use those kinda items in these games. The first time I used it was yesterday to try and lure a cyclops. Even then, the "throw" mechanic is so janky and dumb lol.

Oh man I had no idea about that Sinew augment. That would be such a massive help instead of constantly inventory managing my Ranger.

33 Hours in now and am just heading to Bluemoon Tower I think it is. Am I going really really slow or is that about right? Also just picked up some awesome new daggers tonight called Crimson Teeth. Is it worth farming Chimera for the 3 star upgrade?

I absolutely adore this game. More people should play it.

I was at that exact spot and even same vocation when I decided to..restart from scratch lol. THAT'S slow.. you're fine. Enjoy.

I'm presuming you opted for a complete restart due to missing quest lines given how easy it is to change vocation? Still thats a hardcore commitment going for a complete restart. I think I would have a meltdown if I gave up that kind of progress. :D

Killed the chained up cyclops and then went to different area and killed a cockatrice. Is BBI basically Everfall 2.0?

I was hoping for some visual variety but so far it's just been dark ruin after dark ruin.

Some areas will look extremely familiar as you descend.. lol
