Dragon's Dogma: Dark Arisen Steam pre-order is LIVE

Aww, the timing's pretty bad for me because I lack the funds at the moment (gog winter sale, steam winter sale, x-mas gifts will do that), but I do intend to preorder it asap. I know I can wait, but I really loved my time with it on the PS3. I went Mage/Sorceror/Magic Archer last time so I will probably go more physical this time (probably Strider/Ranger/Assassin). Then again, I did have a lot of fun as the magic classes...

So, was the fast travel really annoying in the original release? It seems weird to have that mentioned right off the bat.

There were only two fast travel locations. One whose location you could pick via the placement of a special crystal you found maybe around halfway into the game, and the capital city, Gran Soren. I think you could get another mobile point via NG+, but that was considered too little, too late.

Dark Arisen added a bunch more of those mobile points and one more fixed location.

It kinda was. How fast travel works in this game is you get those Port crystals, which you drop anywhere in the world(well outside, can't drop them inside buildings and stuff), and that adds this location to your teleport stones.

Problem is in the original, you only had one port crystal until endgame, and teleport stones, which are consumables, were very expensive. Also the port crystal was like halfway into the game or so. So mostly you could only teleport back to the main city, and then had to run back out. A bunch of sidequests and stuff take you back to places you've already visited, and since overworld spawns aren't random, it was pretty annoying after a few times, plus the runs took a while(world is large).

In Dark Arisen, they added like 4 more port crystals to the base game, and you get them all throughout the story. This let you setup a bunch more places to go back to with teleports instantly, kinda like typical fast travel(visit a place, you can teleport there after). They also massively reduced teleport stones costs, so you can actually use them for casual travelling, while the original prices were a big downside early in the game, even for just returning back to town.

I don't think it was annoying. IMO having Ferrystonies purchasable in mass in Dark Arisen kills the exploration of the game. You drop a few in key locations and never have to travel again. ;/ The best part of the game is going through certain locations while your pawn constantly reminds you to blahblah.

Then again it probably didn't matter for the expansion due to how the expansion was focusing on something else.

It's refreshing to see so much care given to a PC port by a Japanese company. I don't usually preorder on Steam, but I made an exception in this case. Plus their faq linked me to "Into Free" the only thing missing from my Dragon's Dogma soundtrack. I really hope this does well!

I'm probably one of only a few who care about this, but I really appreciate them giving the soundtrack in lovely lossless FLAC, and in 24-bit no less. Nice!

Why? Always this licensing issues.

The game made you walk all over the map when escorting people to locations. Unless you already been there and collected those big telelport stones which you come across as you progress through the game.

It was mainly because the map is scaled to lower levels and never changes difficulty so it gets boring and the enemies are low level and most are repeated (wolves meme). I hope mods can make a change to this.

The problem with mods is that they come months after and a full difficulty spike with different enemy placements after you've played the game before on console and again on PC. I am thinking of buying this once I can get the "full modded experience" that changes so much such as textures, models, pawn speech-packs and most of all new enemy placements and difficulty. It's so that it will feel like a different game after playing it so much on console so I don't mind waiting.

you don't have this problems in hard mode imho.

well, just bought it for 23€ at GMG

I have the game in my ps3 and only played like 10 minutes. I just couldn't continue with that terrible aliasing and bad framerate.

So excited to finally try it at downsampled 4k and 60 fps.

I've heard so much good stuff about it on Gaf, I just have to support this trend of porting interesting JRPGs to PC.

Dear PC gamers, enjoy this rough diamond and overlooked masterpiece from last gen. Have fun - I know you will.

BTW: Buy it several times, we need to send out a message to Capcom: Make DD2 happen!!!!

Well my concern was more because if you're not the only one playing the game in your household, you may want more than one character going simultaneously (or even if you want various characters, i guess... you know in an RPG is not that wild of a thought).
And making various steam accounts and then switching them around, just for ONE game, is annoying.
On PS3 at least it was quick enough to go form one account to the other.

Keeping in mind that I haven't played the game, am I understanding this correctly that you send your pawn into the rift, where they'll engage with other players online and then you call them back (or they come back automatically)?
If that's the case, sounds like the rift stuff is tied to your steam account, and then if you send out your pawn in save1, then hotswap to save2, the pawn would return to the wrong save?

Even though you said it would be annoying, it does sound like your best bet would indeed be to make couple extra steam accounts and family share your actual library with the dupe accounts. At least that would prevent any pawn sync issues.

Or just make sure that the pawn is not in the rift when you swap the save files?

if you play online, your main pawn can be hired by other players. It's automatic. But you can still play with him/her in your party. When the other player leaves your pawn, they will get experience, rift crystals and other things when you rest in a Inn. The kind of experience they get depends on the activities they did with the other players.

The pawn being "sent out" are copies of your own, and when you rest at an inn, those copies get back, and update the one you have (with new experience and any gift the other players might have given them to bring to you).

But anyway, i'll probably have to look into family accounts.

Still, not preordering until this is crystal clear.

The lack of the Berserk stuff is supremely disheartening. I always used one set of it, either on my main character or on my pawn depending on what type style I was going for. Either way, I have to wait for a sale.

I had bought both Vanilla DD and Dark Arisen Day 1 so at least I supported the game when I could.

Ah, so that's how it goes.
So then hot swapping save files would definitely result in some weird issues with spawn syncs when the copy of save1 pawn could get synced back to the copy of save2 pawn, for example.

Definitely recommending family sharing then, I think you can share your library with up to 5 other accounts. I suppose 5 is better than none at all.

It doesn't have to kill it for you. You can torture yourself by going through the same areas listening to the same pawn canned speeches.

Given how small the open world is, after a certain point having to walk back and forth became a chore.

Exploration is finding something for the first time which you still have to do. Exploration isn't running up and down the same damn road 200 times....pausing every 2 seconds to wait for your run to recharge.

And even with the stones, you could still never get close to the right city gate that you wanted. Being able to drop them everywhere will be a massive improvement to the game.

Darn it, I tried to get it from GMG with the 23% off voucher after refunding my Steam pre-order, but the voucher doesn't work for it.
It just says, "Unable to add voucher."

As with all Capcom games on Steam, this is more expensive in Mexico (~35 USD) :( Literally everyone else prices games lower in Mexico, I wonder why Capcom believes it's a better idea to do the opposite. Oh well, GMG it is.

I'll definitely be getting this once Christmas is over and I have money again.

This is one of the games that went past my tolerance level for FPS and resolution on consoles (I did try but it was the aspect ratio that got me) so I'm really glad we're getting a fully fledge PC release. Now I get to see what all the fuss is about.

Think I'll wait for a sale, already bought it twice on PS3 (original + exp) & not paying £24 for it. Will be nice to finally play it fullscreen without the borders.

As much as I wanna purchase me, the rational buyer in me is waiting until the Steam sale just in case.

Also, while I doubt mods are gonna explode without proper mod tools, I just want someone to fix enemy spawns or make them more random, that's the only complaint that I really had about Dogma. Aside from that DD is one of my favorite games of all time, never played Dark Arisen before, so Ima feast hella hard on this release. To those who haven't played it already, you're in for a real treat.
