I did this a few months back. It's awesome, great, reliable hosting.

Thinking about grabbing another domain..

i wonder if i can add this to the year of hosting i already have from them for the same price.

edit: doesn't look like it :(

I wanted to do this when they first offered the deal, but was having trouble thinking up a cool domain name.

Still can't think of anything.....

Hmmmm, what's the best way to check if a domain name is taken? If type it into the address bar and I get taken to one of those generic search/sponsored links pages, does that mean it's free or so some jerk just parking there?

What good thing happens if I give you my referral?

Two methods, depending on how me or whoever else you use is set up:

http://www.dreamhost.com/rewards.html

Type 1:
give referral, that person earns $65 per brand new customer, and then earns $5 every time somebody gives you their referral

Type 2:
give referral, that person earns 10% of every dollar you ever spend at dreamhost, plus 5% of every dollar of an indirect referral (somebody refers you)

Money can be cashed out or applied direct to dreamhost, although the total takes a hit if you decide to cash out.

All in all, it just means very good news for all of us who paid deal prices that were still higher than the price you see today. :)

Posting so I can find this thread tomorrow. Needs to get me one of these...damn them for keeping the domain when the year ends though >_<

So what is to stop someone from signing up for the $9.24 plan over and over, netting over $50 in profit every time he creates a new user and gives himself a referral?

Referral bonuses don't kick in on the '777' deal until they renew their dreamhost service.
Additionally, it only works once per credit card, spouses can't do it, and some other stuff. Here's the fine print.

Even without the bonus though it helps kick a person closer to platinum member status (okay, that doesn't mean a whole hell of a lot, I guess).

great tool...time to host my stuff again..yay...well the domain is gone forever..but i have a domain that's mine anyways so i don't wry..this is temp..i want to launch servers of my own one day

Can you sign up for more than one of these accounts? I'm not talking about referring myself, just signing up for another. I got one a few months ago and love it, but I have more sites to host and don't want to split the bandwidth more in the account I already have.

Can you set this deal up so you can use a domain you already own? Also, when does this deal end (most important question).

1. Yes. The cheapest deal lets you host 3 domains, 1 of which comes free in the deal. So in my case, I hooked up my weblog (www.moogle.net) to domain 1, picked my free domain as #2 (www.anime-driven.com, and bought a third through dreamhost for 15/year (www.game-driven.com).

You don't have to pick the free domain right away either. It just stays accredited to your account until you use it.

2. No idea when it ends. It was a December sale, so it could end without warning soon.

damnit , I am tempted to do this, was going to do it last time and decided not to... now I want to do it again...

They're a good host. Had no problems since I signed up last time.

I don't know much about using a server program other than that ws_ftp thing, but it says my site is registered, and I'm going to get some email within 30 minutes or something.
:)

I changed the picture from the tennis ball one, if you're interested.

If you own the domain, you can probably change the nameservers.

I'm going to investigate domain transfer and cancellation tomorrow.

Olimario you need a shoutbox. It would be hilarious to see what people say about you. Meatball rocks though.

I'm gonna be working on my site now thanks for the good hosting deal.

They are an excellent host. I used to host a variety of sites there up until:

a) They officially decided not to support Java Server technology
b) Got my own servers and bandwidth at home so I could run my own apps

But I do have a couple of projects that could benefit from being on a managed pipe.

I signed up for this last time

All I use it for is hosting my avatar :lol

Well.. I guess email too.
