DRIVECLUB: 30 minutes of new Beta footage

Wow, have you noticed the loading times in that Norway video?
After setting the weather and stuff it immediately goes to the overview over the track and 9 seconds later the race starts.
9:21 - 9:30

What hell is a "corridor" racer?!

Its something that was concocted to defend FH2 while at the same time deflating some of the hype this game is producing lol, brilliant i must add

Joking aside- this game looks phenomenal, definitely worth the delay and its definitely showing off what PS4 is capable of and for a first year title i am very impressed.

Damn Rushy even you are plowing trough drivers and overtaking them. I hate that bumper car shit. The fucker doing the bumping/ramming is suffering no consequences for his/her actions. Just bump the car out of the way to overtake him and gain an advantage. That is a glaring fail in my opinion.

ZOMG! More footage including weather in Norway!!!

SNOW. BABY. SNOW!

That is just fantastic! As for the corridor comments, go ahead and talk all you want. In general I think open-world racers are inferior to their circuit or point-to-point peers in the track design department. I'd rather tackle a perfectly designed sweeper leading into a decreasing radius turn than spend my time barreling through fields and ditches.

Unless it's Motorstorm. God would it be fun to grief people in an open-world version of that series.

Looks pretty good but terribly boring for nextgen. Is this really what devs are planning going forward? Scrapping all creativity and just pushing graphics without enhancing the gameplay and scope of the genre? The future is bleak.

Looks beautiful.

Really? How much enhancing do you need in a racing game?

That sense of speed is frightening... O_O

Yes, this is one of the best things in DriveClub. Too many racing games have you going 100 mph, but the scenery goes by as if you were only doing 50 mph. DriveClub captures the sense of real driving speed better than any next-gen console racing game I've seen.

Like many here, that Norway footage looks amazeballz incredibly good ! you can't even argue, best looking racing game (stage) ever ?!? wow !!!

The other track from India i think didn't blow me away though... but i gotta see this on my tv instead of youtube...

Too early to say it's better than other racers.

It certainly captures that blistering sense of speed though, but then so does another racer that recently had a demo released...

Oh shit, here we go, time for trolls to crap all over another DC thread..

Anyway, game looks to be a lot of fun, looking forward to it.

There needs to be more variety than just mindlessly pelting away on a fake empty circular track with some pretty vistas.

It makes sense in an F1 game - that's a sport. But DC is an arcade racer that had zero constraints during its inception. Wish devs didn't blindly chase after the elusive PGR4. It worked then. It won't cut it now.

Yep it's a DC thread. And if you haven't watched the snow video. Weather enhances the gameplay.

Also please state all those "next-gen" gameplay innovations that could/should be done in racing.

I really don't get what you are saying, or comprehend the motivation behind it.

"Open world" racers are also not necessarily more complex on a technical level either. So it's funny seeing people who don't know how open world games work essentially equate open world racers to games like GTAV and Watch Dogs. If Driveclub were "open world" like Horizon or NFS it would look just as good as it does now. But that's not the kind of game they were trying to make.

Game looks incredible. Sick of this corridor meme already.

Just ignore it. It's perpetuated by idiots who don't know what they're talking about.

I must have missed the "corridor" thing... I imagine it was probably pretty funny.

That last video, that snowy mountain level in the rain. Holy shit. Legit looks near photo realistic. But more importantly the handling dynamics, AI and vehicle to road feedback is excellent.

Most realistic wet pavement ever. The puddles look incredibly naturally created.

I really like the puddles but I can't figure out what's being done here so well. Can someone better acquainted with the technology explain why it looks so good? Is it the pattern of water or is it the reflection?

Why, because they're still catering to the people that want a straight racer without any gimmicks? If you want creativity, play Mario Kart. I really can't stand this nonsense argument of "It doesn't appeal to my sensibilities, therefore it obviously suffers from a dearth of creativity or innovation. Definitely not next gen, even though I can't define exactly what that means."

About weather:
What’s the scale of the weather types in the game? Is it just rain or snow, or can we expect drizzle, sleet, downpours, blizzards and so forth?
Alex Perkins: You can expect every one of those and you can expect it to change dynamically and unpredictably while you race – because we’ve designed it to be just like real weather systems. Spots of rain can become torrential downpours or transition into blizzards, quickly or slowly, and when the clouds clear up the tracks will dry out too. So if you’re in Norway, for example, you’ll face heavier snow when you’re racing atop the mountains and much lighter snow or sleet when you descend to a lower altitude. Lots of things play into this, like elevation, wind speed and temperature. We can even adjust all the way to zero visibility conditions too – the only limit will be the need to balance things for fun and usability.
And what about really extreme stuff, like thunder and lightning?
Alex Perkins: Deafening thunder storms with flashes of fork lightning is what we’re aiming for. Our intention is to make this as immersive and exciting as we can.
How customizable will the weather be?
Alex Perkins: We want you to be able to create epic races that you want to share with your friends because they took your breath away. Just like we do with time of day, skies and time lapse speed, we’re going to add lots of options for you to be able to adjust how the weather plays out in your challenges. We don’t want to just offer fixed settings for “rain” or “snow,” we want it to be dynamic and exciting. We’re still working on how best to present this to you and we’ll show more closer to launch.
On that note, can you go into details on exactly what implications dynamic weather has on gameplay?

Alex Perkins: As you’d expect, weather is a game changer. When your tires get wet it’s harder to brake and easier to drift, which has a big effect on how you race and score fame for your club. It’s not just the handling that changes though, visibility can also change massively and impact on how the game plays too, especially at night when you’ve got your windscreen wipers going like crazy and your headlights are reflecting on the snowflakes ahead of you to blanket the sky in white.

Not early at all we seen plenty of videos at this point.

Actually experiencing it is better than watching youtube videos that don't do anything any justice.

I've played one of the big Autumn racers and it has a terrific sense of speed, let's see what this is like when it releases and if it really had the best sense of speed of any racer this gen.

Too early to be throwing around such claims.

This is completely inane. It's a racing game. The whole basis of the mechanics is using the right amount of power in the cars you have in the road/track layout ahead of you. Controlling your momentum and setting yourself up for the next stretch of road is exactly why we play these games. Every way this doesn't feel like a sim is a way it's been stylized; a creative take on racing. The focus on a more robust simulation of the environment is the effort to make the experience more immersive. We're seeing tracks and settings that are woefully underrepresented in racing. This game is valuable to the genre.

I really like the puddles but I can't figure out what's being done here so well. Can someone better acquainted with the technology explain why it looks so good? Is it the pattern of water or is it the reflection?

Diffuse car/environment reflections combined with gradiated bump-maps. It's a beautiful blend.

We will just have to disagree then. I don't think its mindless and a lot of people enjoy that simplicity.
