Driveclub PS Plus Edition Delayed by Server Issues

They probably communicate Authentication informations. Like with every Multiplayer game.
If you have evidence PSN servers have more functions in Driveclub please tell us of you knowledge in the PSN infrastructure.

So, PSN is just a bypass and nothing else?

The smart thing for them to do would have been to plan ahead, and allows PlayStation Plus users to preload the game ahead of time. Now, whenever the PS+ game finally manages to go live, they'll still have a second wave of users clogging up the download system, and potentially straining the gaming servers too.

If the anticipated influx of new users is truly causing a problem, then why not go whole hog and temporarily suspend the ability for people to purchase the downloadable version of the game from the PlayStation Store? Funny how they have no problem with users hammering their fragile servers if only they are willing to dole out $50-$60 to do it.

I'm pretty annoyed by this, but I find it pretty comical their own game is pretty much DDoS'ing their servers. I read somewhere that the game automatically tries to reconnect, it doesn't give up after a few tries, and as far as I know, you can't tell it to stop trying. They have thousands of clients constantly hammering the server which is probably bringing them to their knees. What an oversight.

PSN is fine.

Did Evolution know its game was coming out this month? Patching in replays, rain, snow, private lobbies and, now, stable multiplayer?

I also thought any developer/publisher would have an estimation about how the release day would impact the servers so they can avoid / minimize issues.

Estimations and assumptions arent the best way of doing things ;)

But with these kind of releases you cant really know what is going to happen until those thousands / millions are actually trying to play the game (unless you have extensive experience and the budget to make things work). With Driveclub I can image that there is a whole lot more going on besides just some online racing. It's hard to stresstest those kind of things. But yeah; a decent, big and long beta is always a good test.

But look at a game like BF4; even if you have the knowhow regarding MP, you can still screw things up. Or take GTA5; I believe it took quite a while before everyone could actually play the MP without serverissues.

Downloading the game doesn't have anything to do with Evo though, that's PSN.

The only thing that'd down here is Evo's DC-only servers. You know, stuff to create clubs and play multiplayer and all that.

No they didn't, I guess you should mail them personally to inform them about their game is out or something... I mean its not like online games ever had server issues before or whatnot...

I thought they tested DC (both versions) prior to its release date, so I don't get this delay. I also thought any developer/publisher would have an estimation about how the release day would impact the servers so they can avoid / minimize issues.

According to their FB posts, they did do testing, but still ran into unexpected issues.

They must have seen it coming, otherwise i don't see why they weren't available at the same time.

Bingo.

I'm disappointed because I'm excited about DriveClub. But from the get-go, this project has been a mess—missed launch, delayed nearly a year (and not feature-complete), significant server issues, and a PS Plus Edition delay.

man, just don't announce this shit to make people anticipate if you don't know if you can even release it, or don't give us a damn release date. instead announce it and state it would release after the actual game or something instead of giving a firm date and not delivering.

and lastly announce something sooner if you fuck up, instead of waiting 16 hours later. have some balls and communicate to the community.

It's the lack of communication that Sony needs to improve or otherwise people will go to the competition, aka Xbox One.

I can't believe that in 2014 we're still having major delays in store update and stuff like that. I pay for the service, i want an update on what's wrong. I don't care that the DriveClub demo isn't on the store day one, but at least put a little notice on the blog so everyone knows what's up. Sony can lose the trust of consumers if they act like this, if it's not already lost...

Love it or hate it but Microsoft does an amazing job communicating with their customers and their service is more stable overall. Yes Live does have some moments that it's down but honestly that rarely goes for more than 24 hours and they tell you right away what's up with the problem compared to Sony.

Oh, they wouldn't do this in order to try an entice people to just pay for the actual game, would they? Oh no, never! They'd never do that!

The Plus Version is a walking advertisement to buy the full game.

I mean, seriously. The way the Tours and Car selection menu are laid out, you can't avoid not seeing that a large chunk of the game is not available to you unless you upgrade.

damnit, i just want to check this thing out. i already know i'm stopping at target after work. i won't be surprised if i end up just buying the full game even though i won't sink that much time into it. the cynic in me has to wonder if this isn't part of their strategy haha

Buy Mordor instead...

The number one rule of "crisis communications"—you know, when something goes wrong—is to get ahead of the story and communicate with transparency.

Sony is not good at that.

I doubt they will give you a in-depth analysis of whats wrong with their network.

Meh, I can wait a few days. Realities of modern online video games etc.

Why accept this, though? If I buy a product, it ought to work as advertised. For some reason that's considered an "entitlement mindset" when you apply it to a video game, but in every other arena it would just be a completely ordinary, unremarkable consumer expectation.

This was my guess as to what was going on pretty early into the process.

If they were having server issues with just the full release, putting up the PS+ version for another 6 million people to possibly download and play would of been a poor decision and broke things even further.

6 million is probably way too high. PS+ members on PS4 are supposedly way below that number, the number of PS+ members that's interested ieverybd racing games is even lower. And for half of that number the release is on Friday. So no, this seems more like a case of getting at least some sales before the free version shows to be what reviews say.

Did they have to make that decision last minute? Was hoping to try the PS+ edition before getting the full game. Oh well, I'm just gonna wait then...

Right, which is why I think people would still like the ability to at least download the game from the PS Store. That way, the game would already reside on their hard drives, while Evolution and Sony address the problems with the online game servers. In the meantime, users would still have the potential to play the single-player offline game. This would at least mitigate some of the problems.

Now, by pushing back the PS+ release, they're just delaying an inevitable second wave of online traffic. If they are already having such difficulty handling the current pool of customers who have paid full price for the game, then how will they keep up with the added load when they open the floodgates to people playing the PS+ version (which will probably greatly outnumber the current pool)?

Almost 99% of the people I know had zero idea that there was suppose to be DRIVECLUBE PS+ Free version. Heck most don't even know what DRIVECLUB is. So Sony not ever properly communicating about this game to the general public (pretty much no ads at all) I guess has helped them. Because outside of people that pay attention to this stuff online (us) no one has any idea this is going on.

I played like 3 Hours of Driveclub this morning and problem seems to be that the game always tries to connect to the servers. So unless you tell every PS+ user to cut their connection every owner sends requests to the game every 2-3 minutes causing the servers to overload.

50% attach rate for PS+ actually, according to Sony. So at half of 11,000,000 that would be 5,500,000, close enough.

So if Sony can't communicate driveclub existence it would look like they gave zero games for Xmas. Have they started advertising lbp3?
