DriveClubs shutdown/lack of Pro patch is this gens biggest disappointment

What even did DC do that was so wrong? I've never heard anything but praise for the game.
Praise for the finished version. The launch was a trainwreck.

Delayed for more than a year, then when it released the servers sucked and people couldn't play it online. It took a while to stabilize. The PS+ version that was promised before launch wasn't available until almost 9 months after the game released, then when that version released it couldn't be played online at first because the servers still sucked and Sony was afraid that the influx of new players would kill it. Then it was pulled from PS+ 3 months later. It was already a budget title and widely available for $20 when the PS+ version released.

The post-release support was unprecedented and the amount of content released was amazing. Sony really did support the game. By the time it was done it was a great game. But it sure didn't start off that way.

Evolution Studios refused to make their racing games 60 fps. I don't think the problem is with Sony.

Refused? DC was planed as a 60fps game, but Evolution wanted to have a dynamic weather system, more detailed environment etc, so they scrapped the idea and went 30fps.

would have been great to get a 60 FPS game, but the weather and lighting really did stand out at the time and still looks impressive.

Shame the PS4 Pro came too late for a DC patch to be viable.

Wasn't expecting a patch considering you can't even buy the game anymore. But it's still disappointing, Driveclun in 60fps would be amazing.

From what I gather it launched with a lot of connection issues which really hurt the whole concept and potential of the game.

It's also 30fps which is a deal-breaker for a lot of racing fans.

And the gameplay was some middle ground that wasn't really a sim like Gran Turismo but also wasn't an over the top racer like NFS and I guess people at the time didn't like that.

Its a great game though IMO. I'm not that much into racing games but this was my favourite of the past decade.

M-E-H DriveClub is nothing special, mybe just PS fan can say that, however something like Forza Horizon absolutely oblitirate DriveClub and it's dated structure. Sure it's true PGR 4 successor, however on different platform, but that game came out 2007, when the console space was really different. GT and Forza Motorsport was still relavant. That's no longer the case.

Also same team put up one game which is way more fun and that's onRush. However nobody played that for some reason.

Had they launched their game on time not a year late. Had it been a working product at said launch and not a completely broken mess they'd prob still be around. Once the game got fixed it was pretty great though.

The only patch it should have is an unlocked FPS patch, so we get the 60fps version we were promised, I loved the game and its sense of speed and weight. After the patch that pulled the stupid invisible walls a bit further the game was an amazing skills based arcade racer.

On a side note: I finally played the Forza Horizon games (3 & 4), bought them on the cheap on the Windows 10 "worst electronic delivery ever" store... With all the fuss I was expecting to be blown away, well... I was disappointed, the overly excited announcer that flatter you all the time as if you were some kind of hero for winning a race in the amateur leagues after abusing the rewind feature.

Only racing game I liked last gen. No I loved that game. My most played racing game since maybe Split/Second on 360/PS3.

Yea,shutting Evo down was awful too.....three great Motorstorm games and then Driveclub.....they didn't deserve that at all even with the botched Driveclub launch.

Its no more expensive than many of the other places Sony keep studios going, but it is all part of the Sony narrative of not giving two flying fucks about anyone or anything outside of the Japan & US markets.
To be fair, Motorstorm: Apocalypse was a flop sales-wise and DriveClub had a terrible launch, even after a year-long delay. Evolution was making Sony bleed a LOT of money in a time in which Sony wasn't doing so well as a company - to the point that they had to sell buildings in the US and Japan, as well as their PC business; shutdown several PlayStation first-party studios, like SCE Liverpool, Zipper Interactive and BigBig Studios; while also laying off thousands of employees across Sony Pictures and other divisions, including PlayStation.

The writing was on the wall. Evolution was a great studio, but it just didn't make sense for Sony to have them around. DriveClub was their final shot, but both Evo and specially Sony blew it off by making the same mistake as with Twisted Metal (2012): not testing the online infrastructure of the game with an open beta - which led to the disastrous launch and tons of bad PR and money lost.

i loved the arcady feel of driveclub. I always felt like ab bit more fun then forza. Last forza was pretty bad too imo. Loved forza 1 and 3 Can't remember 2 tbh

Always hoped for a PC release, and that 60fps goodness. Its a damn shame what happened to Evolution, and no more MotorStorm is even worse.
Can you still actually buy Driveclub?, if i ever got my hands on a PS5 (i assume its BC) ?

After Evolution Studios' shutdown Sony have sent the project to the graveyard. They lost such a passionate and talented team, but I'm glad they are having their big chance in Codemasters with Dirty 5.

Played the game to death back in the 2014-2015 before i sold my ps4.

Re-bought a PS4 last Christmas to play Driveclub before the servers shutdown in February. I honestly got flabbergasted at how good it looks and plays.

Its a jewel and hopefully PS4 emulation can bring it back to glory on the PC. Sony did no favors to its fans this time around.

Currently playing the 2 Forza Horizons in 4K60 on PC, some GT:S as well, all nice but DC is still my favorite Racer.
No rewind, no racing line just pure driving, the engine sounds are also sublime, like the british Aston Martin/Jaguars, they sound so dull in other racers.

Never liked Driveclub. Showed how the Bizarre recruitment in Evolution influenced the studio. The shutdown of Evo and the lack of a propper arcade racer in PS4 was the true disappointment. Just imagine what a PS5 MotorStorm would be like...

I get why people love Forza horizon. It is a great sandbox to play around in with hundreds of cool cars, a nice looking world, goofy expansions, and all the customization you'd ever want. I just find it boring to race in the open world. The AI is easy and you don't even have to win to progress. I put like 600 hours in FH3 goofing off online, so it has that.

Getting the platinum trophies for Driveclub and the Bikes expansion was the most fun I've had in an arcade racing game this generation. You had to push to beat ghost times and git gud.

Still my favourite racing game. I remember being well impressed by the rain drops being swept across the windscreen as you race round the tracks. The snow effects Coming at you like missiles... Graphically beautiful. Played quite nicely too.

I don't think it's Sony's strength to keep their online community alive for long. Almost everything from them goes offline after a while.
