Duke Nuken Forever

Excuse Me Reaction GIF by Mashable

A mod? Is this a leak of another project?

Your initial post is so full of information it's impossible to figure out what the fuck you're getting at here.

4chan, some dude posted

"Duke is coming. Here's a taste:"
"Not just the editor, we will be releasing the full source code too."

Also, something about releasing it around June
Figured that's what it was, but man, that context is nice, haha. Thanks dude!

If even it's not fully complete, I'll still check it out.

Funny that seeing the latest Duke related thing comes from a leaked build. I wish they'd do more with the IP.

This has me irrationally excited. I fully anticipate fans will finish this up, correct the lighting, enhance the textures, and maybe even add raytracing as an option. I figure this will eventually turn into the best Duke Nukem ever made.

I always knew we would get the 2001 build somehow. Either leaked or sold to us.

I'm happy it's happening. I can't wait to play this in June.

Makes me feel like the early 2000s again. I played the leaked Doom 3 E3 demo so many times. Along with the Half Life 2 Beta.

It brings tears to my eyes!

Personally I don't like at all that they're teasing and making promises.
If they are really so hard at work to polish the code they have to release in June than SHUT UP AND WORK IN THE DARK!
By exposing themselves like this they give opportunity and time for the lawyers to track and fuck with them.

Yep it's worrying.
And it is 100% true. The guy is taking screenshots requests on 4chan

This game even has survival horror moments. 3DRealms are a bunch of incompetent morons for not completing and shipping this version.

Aparently they leaked it. They were fucking around when they said they'll release it in june, they thought its funny to announce Duke Forever with a delay

I played some before going to work (morning here).
There are some levels to explore, all weapons.
No cutscenes, scripted events (only few). Some enemies to shoot.
It's enough to feel the vibe.
This is really neat to have. About as complete as hl2 beta was. More than doom3 alpha back in the day

The problem was Broussard. Everytime another game came out with new features and gimmicks, usually from developers with more staff and funds, he put his own project on hold. Kept switching engines, adding stuff.. just to keep up with the current meta. Their manpower was too little by the turn of the new millenium. They were a 90's developer. They should've released it back in '99 or so, though 2001 would still have worked as well. I don't need Deus Ex shit in Duke. Just some stupid one liners and excessive gore.

I wonder if they finished game would even be as memorable as the first. It was all about adding stuff just because if you read it up and hear the likes of Miller talking about it.

I'm scrolling through the Duke4.net Discord. Tons of stuff being discussed. People are delving into the editor already. It's a pure gaming Time Capsule. :)

The 2011 DNF was so shit that people just collectively decided to ignore it and are still waiting for the game that was announced in 2001 to be released. The development of it is still officially ongoing guys. "When it's done" indeed.

Wait, where can I get it? DM me.

Boomer Shooters are in vogue. If Randy knew what was good for him he would have hired someone to finish this version of DNF and release it officially.

More videos, loads of screenshots, and even a source file were posted. These two twitter threads seem to have all the leaked content so far.

If the Duke 2001 source gets leaked people are gonna be disappointed all over again that it was never very complete.

That said, modders will have a "finished" version in months, which will be hilarious.

It's not the most up to date 2001 version. The Unreal engine 1 version was worked on until mid/late 2002 supposedly. Then they switched to doom 3 engine and ruined it

HOW?

Maybe if the community asks Randy nicely, maybe he would hand over the Unreal engine 1 version of the source. The community would absolutely run with it and finish it out. I don't think he has any interest in revisiting Duke nowadays anyway.

i had always hoped this day would come. really interested to see how much of the original trailer is in this release.

Been playing for hours with the build and I have some thoughts:
-They aimed way too high. The game is HUGE. Many, many levels, ideas, setpieces. Almost Everything too ambitious for early 3d engine.
-The e3 trailer is all complete there. All the scenes/maps are there. You can launch them, walk around, let the animation plan and if you get the camera right, the trailer could be easily recreated in 4k today.
-Funny thing is, that most of 40 (!!!) scenes in the trailer looked like they were supposed to finally be in the game. The levels where scenes take place exist in this build but the scenes do not take place when you play for most part. Only few. Like, the waitress Lady saying "we are all going to die" is there and says exactly that. When playing normally, she is in the same level as in the trailer map. But in the trailer map/scene, she is moved and camera is adjusted. Same with sniper scene, terminator/robot and few others. This makes me believe at least some of e3 trailer scenes would be in the final game. But now we have all of them at least as short real time scenes and few as maps.
-So it's not ALL hoax. It's just too ambitious and would be very difficult to put all the e3 trailer scenes into the game. But the levels layout for them exist.
-Weapons feel and sound pretty good
-Strippers show boobs
-No voice acting aside from few characters. Most are just text or synthesizer.
-Working pinball and some other stuff like vending machines.
-very dark but nightvision and flashlight exist. afaik the flashlight you can hold, is only in one level.
-There are 400 maps. most just test or placeholders
-Characters look fantastic for 2001 game. Especially the eyes

Too many thoughts.. to summarize.
The game they wanted to make is HALF-LIFE 2. Yep. Almost exactly haha. HL2 is this ongoing, biome changing, progressing adventure with different mechanics. Just what dnf tries to do.
And yes - the 2011 quite closely follows the structure. Casino, desert, dam etc. If you include Doctor who cloned me, it's pretty close.

Yeah the guy was an idiot. Instead of forever chasing the next big engine, he should have realised what he had, released it & THEN done a sequel in the next big engine. Instead, he fritted away money hand over fist, repeatedly.
People like him need a direct manager who tells them when enough is enough. Unfortunately, he just didn't have that.

The link above (https://www.apogeeent.com/devblog/dnf-truth) shows that even the owner was silly enough to keep falling for it

"Because of the game's slow development, when new 3D technology became available, the project--in effect--rebooted to make use of the newest tech causing massive delays over and over."

Yeah - Guess who's fault that was?

25 years later and the Hollywood Holocaust bathroom mirror still got me, now remade in fucking DNF 2001 :messenger_hushed:
I like how the weapons feel and the AI is pretty good when it works. Reminds me of HL1.
