Duke3D appreciation thread

Say what you will about 3Drealms, but Duke3D is a game that was ahead of its time, and yet today it has cool elements that many other fps lacks.

You could for example in death match lay out some pipe bombs, and then look into a video camera to see where your enemy is coming. Pull the trigger and booom.

Some cool features Duke3D had:

Lan play
Online play
Pipebomb traps
Holoduke
Flying with jetpacks
lasertraps
Shrink gun
Freezegun
Steroids (made him fast)

I remember Duke was my first online game experience (bar the old text adventure stuff with my C64 modem). One of the levels had a elevator...remember camping like a little bitch...then I hear a whirling sound behind me, guy I was playing with had used a jetpack to fly up through the window to zero my arse. :lol Great times. I loved the original....hopefully the 6-7 year wait for Forever will be worth it....I hope so, the 2000 E3 version looked terrific.

Sorta off subject but, COCKLES I like that a avatar a lot, glad to see it back. What's it from again? I think you answered the question before, but I forgot...

How did it look again?

Duke3D was the third game I played "online" after Rise of the Triad and Doom. Duke remained my favorite FPS until Halo came out.

There's supposed to be some true 3d port of Duke3D with the possibility of adding plugins like hires textures, 3d models and stuff, à la jDoom. Does anyone know where I can get it, along with the right plugins?

From Public Information Movies. Charley series. Warning of dangers for children...such as NEVER TALK TO STRANGERS! ect.

As for Duke, do a google search for Duke Nukem Forever E3 BINK - should bring up a link to a good video of it. Still looks decent even today, 4 years later.

Duke 3D has been ported to Xbox...in the...er...usual places guv'nor.

After Duke, no other FPS had 10% of the fun on-line. Pipe bombs, laser traps and 1 on 1 gameplay was everything for me.

I just can't stand the pace of modern on-line shooters, and they all seem very shallow, gameplay-wise, when compared to Duke.

yes my point exactly.

Good memories.

I used to love putting bombs in the air ducts, and awaiting my brother to go inside.

Also holoduke kicked ass, I had forgotton about that.

I LOVED Duke 3D and was a massive fan when it was first released. Not only was the singleplayer very enjoyable but the online game was fantastic. Hell it even had a very decent editor with game, I made quite a few levels when I was a kid. Great Trilogy, hopefully they won't ruin the series with Forever.

"Let god sort'em out"
Hearing that one when I triggered around 40pipebombs for the couple of monsters that were coming at me was pretty hillarious. :)

Anyway definately my favourite multiplayer FPS, the level and weapon designs just made it fantastic... from the clever uses of light switches, water traps, giant rotating floors (that one was my favourite) jetpacks, shrink & freeze rays... the list goes on and on.

re: dnf screenshots

damn, that game looked great. i'm still clinging to the hope that it'll be released sometime in the next decade. and it'll rock.

Loved the single and multiplayer. It was also one of the first fps to offer internet play. But I put the most time into its easy to use level editor.
