I was surprised. Were you surprised? I was surprised.

After a canceled release in '91 as "Earth Bound", the United States finally gets to experience the genesis of one of gaming's most respected and one of it's most little known games in the form of a Wii U release on Nintendo's eShop. After more than 25 years of existence, Mother finally comes state side with an official release. Nintendo, and https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ayrcVjrIHBk Itoi announced the stealth release for this evening, 6PM Pacific time.

Official?

The cancelled '91 release was eventually leaked onto the net by the well known fan translation group Demiforce. They hacked the game's ROM and renamed the game "Earthbound Zero", which has been it's unofficial title for the past 20 years. The USA was skipped out even when Nintendo bundled a rerelease with the sequel Earthbound for the GBA as Mother 1+2.

So what's the big deal?

WHAT'S THE BIG DEAL? Well, other than this being only the second Stateside release of a game from the Earthbound series in it's 25 year + existence, it has only been accessible in unofficial methods. This game oozes the same style, vibe, and ethos that everyone fell in love with on the SNES with Earthbound. Everything from the music to the art style, from the story line and the characters, scratched that itch that only Earthbound could reach. If you're like me, the moment you watched the announcement trailer you began to feel a tightness in your chest and sensed a presence you haven't felt since...

We're actually lucky to even have the series at all. The game was originally pitched by Itoi to Shigeru Miyamoto directly, who turned the game down due to his distaste for celebrity developed video games. For whatever reason, Shiggy called Itoi back and reversed his opinion, leading to us having one of the strongest examples of world, characters, dialog, and interaction in all of gaming history.

So what now?

Many of us are suspicious that Nintendo may be releasing this as build up for another announcement. Earthbound fans have been clamoring for Mother 3 for years and with the eventual release of Earthbound on the eShop and now Earthbound:Beginnings, some of us are getting our hopes up.

Would buying this help? Maybe. Hopefully. Surely Earthbound's success on the VC helped in this situation. Just keep in mind that this is a very old game. While it still drips in post modern stylings, it was created in '89, for the NES, heavily influenced by the original Dragon Quest. There is lots of grinding, a big difficulty jump, and Itoi himself said that the final sections of the game got little to no QoS testing. But it should be experienced for anyone who enjoyed Earthbound. It is a necessary purchase for anyone who considers themselves a major fan of the game.

Fun Fact:

Mother is named after a John Lennon song.

The game should be available as the Nintendo World Championship comes to a close, which is happening as I type this.

I meant to hit preview, instead I hit submit. :( Hope no one else has claims on this OT.

I'll buy to support Mother localizations. But I don't think I'll play it.

Grindy RPGs aren't my thing these days.

So for people how've played this before, is it better or worse than Earthbound/Mother 2? Would it be a step down after playing Earthbound or is it still just as good even though it's an NES game?

Folks that already have this in the announcement thread say it is just a dump of the original translated ROM.

Nothing wrong with that.

Yup. I'm fine with that. I'm glad to see this ROM get an official release.. no need to mess with it.

Megaton
Biggest news of the decade.

I imported Mother 1&2 for GBA the day it came out.
So happy that this is finally getting an official release.

Bought it and plan to start playing through it again later tonight. Felt weird not seeing the Zero on the title screen (and so good).

For those going into it for the first time, best of luck and have fun :)

I was surprised. Were you surprised? I was surprised.

Is this an Eddie Izzard thing?

I haven't followed the Mother series at all (did I get that right?). I bought Earthbound on VC but haven't been able to get into it. I think starting from the beginning is more interesting to me.

I'm pretty happy this got announced all-in-all

It isn't as strong of a game, no doubt about it. I think it is worth playing since it has the same things you'd live in Earthbound.

I feel pretty shitty about it. :(

Much rougher around the edges. Difficulty spikes are ridiculous, especially towards the end. Expect an old-school grind in some spots and a lot of dying.

The music is heavenly and is the only thing that's on par with EB IMO.

Can't wait to see how many people give up at Mt. Itoi.

Kinda impressive for an NES RPG as far as scope goes, but it's incredibly grindy (Even moreso that EB/M2's opening hours) and a definitely a step back in a lot of ways. It's still interesting to see where the series started, though.

As pointed out above, the soundtrack is fantastic, too.

Don't feel too bad, last year i made a shin megami tensei nocturne psn topic with none of the effort of your topic and it was claimed by someone else.

What a way to kick off E3, still can't believe that just happend. Mr. Itoi's introduction video was a really nice idea as well. Will download the game tonight.

Mechanically it has not aged well, but IMO this game has a story that rings the truest to the entire franchise.

I've been playing through Final Fantasy III in English on my NES flashcart (yes I own the Japanese cart), so I might actually have the fortitude for NES RPGs now.

I'll forgive no mother 3 yet, MAINLY because I was not expecting this game to EVER see US release. I was not expecting to play this game this year, but I can't wait!

Hope I know what I'm getting into....

I don't feel like that's a good reason to cut off such a big user base.

Kinda weird, yeah. It's the only NES game outside of Duck Hunt (And that's understandable, given how Duck Hunt controls) to be released on Wii U VC and not 3DS. It's a shame, because I think it'd be infinitely more tolerable on a handheld with savestates.

And on the other hand, I'd like a Mysterious Murasame Castle release on Wii U...

If I didn't have limited funds at the moment which I'm saving for a potential Mother 3 release on Tuesday I'd buy this in a heartbeat just to support the franchise.

If nothing else is announced by the end of the week, I'll get it anyway.
