EARWOLF |OT| Podcasts for Daddy

Wow, that 6 month archive thing is terrible. When I first heard of Comedy Bang Bang I went back and started listening to it from the beginning and have had a much richer experience with the podcast due to all the callbacks and in-jokes that are brought up all the time. I've also done the same with several other Earwolf podcasts and because there's so much content I'm not current with any of them, meaning that if I want to keep listening this way I'll have to pay for it and use another app to do it.

I'm not against paying for podcasts, but if they're going to charge for old podcasts then they should do it like Never Not Funny or Doug Loves Movies and let people pay for access to an RSS feed with the old eps on it. I have those sitting in Overcast ready for me to listen to whenever I get the chance.

I hate this idea of a "paywall" being a negative thing. It's such a silly word. Cars and the subway have "paywalls" too.

It frames money and compensation as a barrier to content. That seems like such a toxic idea to me.

They already confirmed on /r/earwolf that RSS feeds are on their roadmap. It's disappointing they didn't see the need for them at the outset though, given they already know about a premium-ish model with NNF.

Paywall specifically describes a shift in strategy from a free model to a pay model, and it's not hard to see why their introduction is commonly unwelcome. Cars and subways were never free services.

Having never listened to Hollywood Handbook I've decided to download all of the episodes before they go behind the paywall. I hope this wasn't a stupid idea.

How is it a silly word? It's a barrier where one has to pay in order to access content behind it.

Seems like a totally appropriate term to me.

I've been singing the praises of HH for over a year now, I can't believe some of you are just now giving them a chance.

I don't think anyone hates to hear that. Howl has problems, but many positives as well. I don't think smugly posting that it helped you find HH invalidates those.

It's true, bread singing the praises of HH way back when is how I got to listening to them. It's great that new people seemingly are catching onto the show all the time in this thread

I wasn't being smug. I had heard about it before, obvs, but until it was all sitting there right in front of me on my phone I had never gotten around to listening to it.

That was just the truth.

Invalidating what? What are you talking about?

Are you saying "It has good points but you're still an asshole"? Am I misreading that?

Mmm, I probably overreacted. I'm still holding on to when you suggested us going against Howl putting archives behind a paywall is the same as calling these podcasts "worthless."

HH has been on absolute fire recently. I lost my shit at the happy meal discussion. I will pay for Howl right now if it give me another Sean and Hayes project. Howl money should go 100% to Wolfcool. Also, enjoyed Hayes' dig at the paywall issue.

lol

as i'm reading this, the old HH ad comes on and their talking about how no one donated to the reality show show even though they said they would.

you can't make this shit up.

Don't look at me - I donated specifically to HH. Never listened to RSS when it was on air.

But putting the archives behind a paywall will solve this!!

A regular revenue stream directly linked to listens by subscribers, yes, it literally does. The same way a salary solves the problem of living off of tips.

This really isn't a crazy new concept. It's just finally being applied to a different kind of professional.

Anyway, to each their own. I've stated my point of view pretty clearly and with a reasonable amount of relevant detail. You can call me smug or whatever you want. Sean and Hayes and Superego are still getting paid on the reg, and that's really the only dog I got in the fight.

You know what else would result in a revenue stream? Going further - charging more, taking down certain podcasts entirely under a paywall, making new podcasts paid, etc. Those probably sound overboard though. To me, yanking all the episodes away from people to under a paywall is overboard. It's not necessary. For me, it is too far and leaves a bad taste in my mouth. It especially sounds bad after the spin of cleaning up the archives. Yes, it does that, but it also adds some faux benefit Howl. They really didn't need to do it - it would have been so easy to skip this part. I was all on board (you can see in this very thread) at that point. I had already signed up with every intention to never unsubscribe. That has remained unchanged. I don't have a reason to unsubscribe, but I do have a reason to complain on a message board. It would have been so easy to take the archive stuff out, and say "You just get more with Howl." (Which I'm pretty sure a number of free services that later added a premium tier have done) Instead, to me, they're overplaying and making this whole "Netflix for podcast" deal.

I agree - I want them to get paid, but I don't like a few of the actions Earwolf took to make it happen.

CBB bump is real

and yeah, HH is the best podcast on Earwolf

Agreed. It has won its way into my heart to be my favorite podcast. Tuesdays are a highlight of my week because I can listen to HH on my way to work. Thursdays as well - improv4humans is fantastic.

EDIT: Honestly, if they had just announced premium RSS feeds I probably wouldn't have been as annoyed. It's apparently in the pipeline, I'll believe it when I see it, though. The app kinda sucks right now and it's insane to launch without a proper Android app.

Alllllll this Engineer Cody stuff is solid damned gold.

Up to Episode 7 now.

#SpeakOnThat

EDIT: Taking a HH break to check out The Complete Woman. It's really fantastic.

EDIT EDIT: Back to HH. "Okay, they got this one right. The comedian was Aziz Ansari and it was Garfunkel and Oates." HOLY SHIT!!!

The Wild Horses miniseries is good, but I wish the the interviews weren't so long. I'd like the format to be switched in terms of time on interview and time on improv. Loving the improv though.

Ok so I'm a late follower to HH and with this whole talk of paywall system coming up I decided to catch up on old eps I never heard starting from the beginning.

On episode 4 I had my mind blown....this whole time I was listening I thought Adam Pally WAS Hayes Davenport and he was just doing a character for the show! I feel like an idiot lol

It's great. Chowing through Hollywood handbook. The Complete Woman and the new Superego series are great.

I love it.
Yeah, the Red Badge of Courage episode was the first thing I listened to and loved it. The Superego guys doing Spontaneanation style improv in a literary structure.

So for the people using Howl, how is the experience so far. The new shows any good?

I've only listened to Wild Horses and the Psychic Pshow. I actually thought the Psychic Pshow was going to end up being an improv show about Lauren visiting a fake psychic, but no... it's actually about visiting real psychics. :p It was actually the most interesting at first when she was talking to her dad. The first psychic was sort of interesting, but I really didn't feel like the others really gave enough for it to be interesting. Plus thinking psychics are complete frauds doesn't help.

Wild Horses is pretty good. I've liked the improv bits for the most part. As stated, though, I just wish the interviews were a bit shorter.
