Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

If it is recorded to HDD then doesn't that slow down HDD reading when playing games?

Well that depends on how much Sony have told developers they can use no? In addition, if that 16gb flash does pan out as rumoured ages ago, and assuming that this "share" feature is OS based and not game based, they can write to that and dump to the HDD when it isn't being pushed hard.

We also don't know what encoding it might or might not be doing, though it sure as hell won't be recording 1080 uncompressed. They could have planned on use H.265 as the codec so even 1080 video wouldn't be too large.

It all sounds really great if true. Has anyone commented on backwards compatibility? I would sell both my PS3s to fund one if it could play all the games.

There is no such thing as PSN titles. There are PS3 games, and they can release at retail, on PSN or on both. They BOTH need the same hardware. If the PS4 is able to play any of the digital content you own, then it should also be able to play the retail content.
Fine, No psn titles. I said if we're lucky.

Recording the last 15minutes of gameplay sounds like a big waste of resources and for the very small niche that will appreciate it, probably better done with a capture card.

Theres no such thing as "free" performance. Its stuff that could be going elsewhere.

*RDR*
Dat PS3 exclusive Draw Distance.

It's the developer talent more than the hardware.

Pretty strange comparison there.

Both open world games. The Infamous engine has a crappy draw distance and horrible LOD issues. PS3 exclusive.

Going PS3 exclusive doesn't guarantee better graphics than multiplatform games. It also requires more money & talent.

I'm very worried about this touch pad on the controller. :/

It just sounds like a stupid gimmick feature that will add nothing to the experience. I just hope they get the rest of it right.

But the games! Just kidding. I would love to have a recording 15 minutes of gameplay and continually share share content online.

About the 8GB, it's just PR talk. It's meant for the fanboys, something like "don't worry that they have more memory, we will still be better!".

PS4 = 4GB GDDR5. Period.

Also, being slightly more powerful than Durante is surprising actually. I don't believe it, I'll wait until they officially reveal the consoles.

Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox, will ship with a redesigned controller and launch by the end of the year in Japan and the US. PlayStation 4’s European launch will follow in early 2014.

FUUUUU!!!. I knew it. They should release here in EU simultaneously, or set NA as the last, as this is their strongest area. I'm sure Microsoft and Nintendo would never give the finger to their best customers in a similar fashion. Not to mention, that the last time we Europeans got only a partial backwards compatibility, whereas the Americans and Japanese got the fully working version, but we still had to pay the same price (or more if you count the value of the currency).

I understand it's partly due to the localization for those European countries, where they aren't accustomed to playing their games in English, but it still pisses me off as that doesn't apply to Scandinavia and UK.

EDIT: On the plus side, the first-served can be seen as beta testers. Like in PS2's case, where the NA model had some problems with the DVD reader.

I honestly think EU + US is more important than US + JP. A WW launch, even with shortages, is much better than missing the holiday season and COD+FIFA in EU. I don't think they'll have any significant franchises for the JP market in Japan, at least not during launch period. Maybe GT6P, but that'd be bigger in EU anyways.

I agree, but US+EU=600 million people. US+JPN is around 420m. Add in Europe being lots of countries and its just logistically easier to launch there later.

US+UK would only be 360m though Sony...

Sony has DVR functionality in PS3s for Europe and Japan that records during game play, i.e. entirely within the PS3 OS' minuscule footprint. All this amounts to is using that same functionality to capture the video out of their own system (no need for even having a tuner).

I could see how with a 512MB OS they could quite easily fit this feature in without impacting overall game performance, especially with the rumored 16 GB flash storage on the system. The big question here will be a matter of interface. Will Sony design an interface that is accessible and appealing? If so this is a very compelling feature.

dont think you can have 2 different types of ram when your using a apu system.

If they decided on it late in the game they would have to implement it via a discrete PCIe based DDR controller, like the kind used in RAM disks.

I can easily imagine them having integrated a small 4 lane PCIe controller into the southbridge for potential future expandability (BC module). They could add 2 lane switches on the motherboard (to preserve BC option) the RAM disk controller and 4 chips of cheap DDR3-1333L of 8Gb densitiy.

The reason I find this likely is lack of availability of high density gddr5 (presumable). They are most likely already at 16 2Gb chips with just the 4GB spec since:
a. 4Gb density chips aren't listed at any memory IC vendors (hynix, micron, samsung)
b. they would need millions of these high density ICs this year and tens of millions by next year and since specifications (176GB/s) call for some binning...

You do realise that the 360 sold better than the PS3 in the UK?

Maybe it wasn't especially clear, but by 'over here', I was referring to the EU as a whole (as per the preceding paragraph). So yes, I am completely aware that the 360 has outsold the the PS3 in the UK, however, that isn't the case across the whole continent.

Outside UK 360 is still behind PS3 in popularity and even in UK it's nowhere near the domination normally touted. The 360 dominates one territory only and that's the US - UK it for sure sells more but the ratio split is much closer and of course that's with PS3 launching much later.

I reckon no sensible publisher at this point would risk upsetting the apple-cart backing MS in Europe - the risk they'd be handing off millions of sales would be too high. Now for sure MS is in a better position in Europe than before, but it's not that much better, and in fact their issue isn't the console but the fact Live is so gimped in so much of Europe vs PSN. That alone I suspect will prevent MS gaining much additional ground unless they annouce huge Live improvements as well.

At present I'd say the evidence on form is that it won't overly hurt Sony to launch after MS in Europe.

Now would it be better to launch same time? Sure. Will they lose some customers launching later? Sure. But there is very little actual evidence or indication it'll cost them much.

I don't really get why they always delay Europe though - would be interested to know why (assuming there is a known why).

these are good points, but I can't help but feel microsoft will change their policies regarding live. I can see them making multiplayer free but replacing it something else, what that something else is anyone's guess at the moment.

you also have to factor in the bc effect. if the orbis doesn't support bc, I can see there being a somewhat large number of people pretty darn upset over that. will that result in them not buying the orbis? possibly? will it see them choose durango instead? we know from certain charts just how popular psn credit is with it routinely charting, so for sony not to have bc (based on rumours) is going to hurt them significantly I feel.

then there's the anticipation for next gen hardware. if sony decide to delay to 2014 and give microsoft the holiday along with microsoft changing gold to make online gaming free and the news that sony don't have bc? could hurt their market-share significantly.

there's al of of what ifs and speculation based on rumours, but it's one possible scenario.

the other is sony launching in 2013 with bc and retaining their marketshare with little effort and microsoft seeing their mainland share dwindle due to their backwards insistence on paywalling online gaming.

at the moment, it's all baseless conjecture and speculation, but what else are we going to do? talk about games? O_O

Can't find the link but there was a presentation by a manufacturer (I think Samsung but not sure) that 4gbit gddr5 chips would be sampling Q1/2013.

Long time lurker finally got my account activated, I hope posting will be as much fun as watching the wonderful thing GAF is.

Its going to be interesting where both consoles price, if orbis is more powerful then durango surely this will make the core orbis console more expensive?

maybe this will happen:

Orbis: orbis with 1 Dualshock 4 +500GB HD = $399

Durango: durango + kinect + normal controller + headset + 500GB HD = $399

Surely going with a weaker setup will give MS value/price advantage?

If they go with 8 GB DDR5 we'll definitely be seeing yet another "$599" moment.

bummer about Europe sony fans :(

but sat 2013 release for us :D :D dope

why not give half of Japans system launch to Europe, Japan is all handhelds right?

hmmmmmm

I don't see how. Overall Sony 1st party games have looked better than MS's. And during the last E3's, everything is Kinect. I see two rights.

Comparing exclusives is horribly flawed from multiple angles. How do we know how much better or worse these games would have looked on the opposite platform? How do we compare two games that could have different budgets? How do we compare different art directions when it's the art that contributes most to "graphics"? Do we know the priorities of both of these teams for these exclusives? It's foolish to look at exclusives because there is nothing to compare them to. The fact that many consider Gears 3, Halo 4, and Forza Horizon to be up there with the best looking games this gen contradicts your whole point here to begin with. Even then I'd say it's flawed to look at those exclusives as well since we have no idea how well those games would have turned out on the PS3.

Also I question if you've even watched their last E3 when you say "everything is Kinect". Of the roughly 14 games shown during the conference, 5 were Kinect games. No disrespect, but blanket (and wrong) statements like that only show a level of ignorance on your part.

kinnect2 is not going to be a cheap feature if it is packin.

I took it as they're pushing for 4 gig of fast RAM to match the slower 8 gig in Durango. What's worrying to me that it implies it's not yet final.

I don't know why you would.

Multiple leaks/sources now including Edge state the 4GB of DDR5 as the current status quo. If they're "pushing for the final PS4 RAM to match up to Microsoft’s 8GB" there has to be some kind of change to actually push for.

Developers aren't 10 months away coding games under the assumption they've got at least 4GB of DDR5 to work with when Sony might suddenly drop to 2GB or something, the 4GB DDR5 is all but fact at this point. Therefore the only thing they could be "pushing for" is more than 4GB of RAM, be that DDR5 entirely or a split pool between the 4 GB of DDR5 and some combination of other RAM design (most likely DDR3).

The draw distance is fine. I think you're mistaking the DOF for draw distance. And it probably suffers from the least LOD issues of the open-world city games. Maybe you're thinking of inFamous 1?

The reason the comparison is wierd though is because inFamous 2 is easily at the highest tier of open-world games visually as is RDR. But they both attempt far different things for meaningful side-by-side comparison, but they're both stunners IMO.

Infamous 2

Dat PS3 exclusive Draw Distance.

It's the developer talent more than the hardware.

Just to be precise Sucker Punch is a really small team compared to Rockstar, in any case Infamous 2 use SSAO, higher res text compared RDR so your point is quite opinable about the fog of I2.... in any case, Rockstar game use DOF to smudge the draw distance details yeah better technically better but basically has the same function.

Don't worry Durante is the most powerful of then all, just ask From! ;-)

All Sony has to do is allow that 4GB of GDDR3 to be fully accessible to devs. If that means throwing some DDR3 in there for the OS, so be it.

I'll take the draw distance and weather effects of RDR, plus better texture filtering over IF2.

Honestly, I believe that pushing towards 8GB is reasonable. How many people here on GAF didn't get the difference between DDR3 and GDDR5? All in all, it might be cheaper to go with more RAM than just doubling the marketing costs.

Looks like I'll be buying Durango afterall. Sorry Sony, but I'm NOT playing Battlefield 4 on a current gen console. I will probably switch later depending how much later PS4 releases. I'm not waiting for 4 months again.

Instead of boosting the RAM to 8GB, would it make more sense if they upgraded it to 6GB (GDDR5 still), with 1GB reserved for the OS and 5GB for games ? That would put the PS4 on equal footing with the Xbox in terms of RAM size, but would still have the advantage on the RAM type. Is 6GB of RAM technically possible ?
