Edge: PS4 to launch in Europe in early 2014, US/JP 2013, more powerful than next Xbox

Comparing exclusives is horribly flawed from multiple angles. How do we know how much better or worse these games would have looked on the opposite platform? How do we compare two games that could have different budgets? How do we compare different art directions when it's the art that contributes most to "graphics"? Do we know the priorities of both of these teams for these exclusives? It's foolish to look at exclusives because there is nothing to compare them to. The fact that many consider Gears 3, Halo 4, and Forza Horizon to be up there with the best looking games this gen contradicts your whole point here to begin with. Even then I'd say it's flawed to look at those exclusives as well since we have no idea how well those games would have turned out on the PS3.

Also I question if you've even watched their last E3 when you say "everything is Kinect". Of the roughly 14 games shown during the conference, 5 were Kinect games. No disrespect, but blanket (and wrong) statements like that only show a level of ignorance on your part.

You're getting lost in the details. Throw art direction out the window, Sony's 1st party titles have overall, been more impressive from a technical stand point, in most aspects. Again, overall, majority, etc. Maybe Sony has more talent on the 1st party side of things.

2014 for EU would be a disaster.

Japan should be getting the shaft, not EU.

Except Sony is a Japanese company and despite Japan's sagging relevance in the console sector is still home to a disproportionate number of 3rd party developers.

Meanwhile Europe is historically the weakest market for launch and picks up steam in the 12-24 month window, and Sony will likely have Gran Turismo ready within that window.

If they're afraid that they'll barely have enough hardware for U.S. and JP releases it makes a lot of sense delaying Europe.

I'll take the draw distance and weather effects of RDR, plus better texture filtering over IF2.

Even the PS3 port of RDR was more technically capable. It's not the PS3, it's the devs.

You are really wrong here, I2 technically is well done: HDR, SSAO & higher texture are not that common in a free roaming game. I don't know how texture filter you are talking because Rage engine sucks from this point of view. & I repeat, SP is probably one of the littler team in the sony first parties studio, at least at the time. You can compare Rockstar San Diego numbers to the Sucker punch Team.

The 360 launch nearly around the same time in the US, Japan and Europe. WiiU did the same. What fuck can be Sony's trouble to do the same? They can bet on Microsoft launching world wide this year. I'd rather have a PS4 I think but I don't know if I can wait longer for next gen.

What's wrong with comparing exclusive games?

Comparing multiplatform games is like looking at the lowest common denominator since the game has to run on two completely (looking at the 360 and PS3 here) different platforms.

Comparing exclusives on the other hand allows you to judge the best the system has to offer since the game is custom tailored for that hardware.

I do think Red Dead looks better on most aspects than Infamous 2, but the game world is much more sparse and empty. Not to mention that Rockstar is a huge developer and Sucker Punch is a much smaller one.

Face is melting @ 8gb, video recording and new controller.

FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCK I can't wait until we see how this thing looks. Feel bad for comrades in Europe but hopefully it won't be region locked and they can import?

Maybe they're trying to future-proof the PS4 by switching to 8GB. It would certainly make sense in an environment where a yearly product cycle is the norm.

The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

Am I the only one, who thinks things like this are just a waste of resources? I just don't understand why everything should be able to be shared via internet nowadays. I just want to play my games.

For where we are now (not having seen console, games) my hype has reached critical mass. The only thing to increase it is a proper reveal.

because not everyone is you

No way this will have 8GB ram though

What's so funny?

---

What I mean is that every new generation there are 'insiders' saying that Sony's console is the most powerful. This always happens. And in the end it's usually not true.
Well, I was not the only one that found your post funny.

Orbis being more powerful has been known since we started getting the hardware spec leaks. Also since both MS/Sony are using similar platforms, they are more directly comparable than say 360/PS3. Having more powerful hardware also doesnt mean an automatic win, so not sure why you are so worried.

Infamous 2 had better texture filtering?

Did we play the same game?

The textures being higher resolution is also questionable.

I can't accept some week of delay of difference in europe but Christmas in the US/Jap & March on EU? No, fuck you sony.

About the 8GB, it's just PR talk. It's meant for the fanboys, something like "don't worry that they have more memory, we will still be better!".

PS4 = 4GB GDDR5. Period.

Also, being slightly more powerful than Durante is surprising actually. I don't believe it, I'll wait until they officially reveal the consoles.

Please dear god don't tell me you are pinning your hopes on a "special sauce"

Now that term is definitely something made up by a PR team for viral marketers

To those complaining about EU getting it later - I'm in the UK - I would say to you this:

Every Sony console, ever, has released in Japan significantly earlier than the EU.
Every Sony console, ever, has released in NA ealier than the EU.

Why the fuck would people expect this to be any different?

It's 2013. One of the greatest things this gen was worldwide releases becoming the norm rather than the exception. You can't just put that genie back into the bottle.

*spits drink*

8GB GDDR5??? Holy moly!!!!

Face is melting @ 8gb, video recording and new controller.

8GB GDDR5 woooow!!!

it will NOT have 8GB of GDDR5. Don't set yourselves up for disappointment, that statement is tricky,

The hell is that shit? :\ I2 is a capture of a streaming video of gamespot, how you can compare to DF capture method? It's completely unfaithful. I have played the demo, is not that bad, come on.

Lol, not worried at all. All I'm saying is that going by the numbers it does look like it's more powerful, but that needs to be proven in real world performance.

But whatever, the games are the most important, as usual. :)

(And I'm a Sony's franchises lover btw)

You folks are setting yourself up for disappointment thinking that Sony will be putting 8GB of RAM. Like a few others have noted, the article most likely meant Sony is striving to have 4GB of DDR5 RAM to match up to MS's 8GB of slower RAM in the final version of the console.

Am I the only one, who thinks things like this are just a waste of resources? I just don't understand why everything should be able to be shared via internet nowadays. I just want to play my games.

Well, you can just play games.

Its optional. Noone is forcing you to use that button.

Just temper your expectations regarding the 8GB.

8GB will be possible, but not with GDDR5. A 2GB chunk of GDDR5 in 4 x 512MB chips would cost about 43$... so you'd need 16 chips to get 8GB, which would

1) cost you over 160$
2) make the motherboard insanely large, even in clamshell mode
3) make the motherboard so hot that you could do bacon on it.

8GB of DDR3 stacked in a 1024-bit bus would do the same trick.

If this stuff is true, then Microsoft has already loss the perception that it'll have superior (or even equal) hardware to Sony's beast. If that's the case, I'm starting to wonder if I should even get Microsoft's console at launch seeing how 1) Sony has always had superior 1st party games and 2) Sony will potentially also have superior 3rd party ports. Those two plus free online play and suddenly Microsoft isn't looking so great.

This is exactly what it means. I let the hype take me for a milisecond myself but the feasibility of 8GB GDDR5 in a 2013 console is slim to none. 4GB is awesome as it is.

I posted the wrong picture. Check the update.

Ok, checked. Well, probably Rage has better AF but texture still sucks compared to I2, looks the ground. In any case the perspective is completely different to understand how works in I2, at least on the ground.

The paragraph from the article makes no sense when you parse it that way. Regardless of the reality of the situation, Edge seems to think the quantity of RAM may be increased.

for the people bitching about the eu launch possibly being later, do you not remember the vita? it was also delayed for north america. i get that europe is always last, but sony doesn't delay releases because they want to. they want to have it in all regions as soon as possible, just like any of their competitors. also, if it's anything like the vita launch delay, it might not be more than a couple months.

so which is better? to me it would make sense to have more (slightly slower) RAM instead of of having less and hitting the storage device (disc or hdd).

I mean if you needed 6GB say, it would be better to have it all in memory than keep going back and swapping bits and pieces, right? I don't know.

Development sources with working knowledge of both next generation consoles have told us that PlayStation 4 will be more powerful than the next Xbox
we already knew that.
will ship with a redesigned controller
we already knew that.
and launch by the end of the year
we already knew that.
a small touchpad in place of the existing Select, Start and PS buttons. The tech is based on Vita’s rear touchpad, and is similarly responsive in use.
ok this is new. awesome :D

September/October in US, Christmas in EU, I can accept this. But fuck them if they screw Christmas for the EU.

Those prices look high, where are you sourcing them from?

Regardless, 8GB GDDR5 will be expensive. It'll probably increase about ~30W in power consumption as well.

It worked last time?

Last time the 360 was hampered by lack of brand awareness and shoddy hardware, those are two points that no longer exist. Xbox is a big brand now, even in Europe. The end of generation advertising from MS has been quite big on the continent, so Sony need to watch out. Like I said, unless they are 110% certain there is no next gen COD/FIFA coming in 2013 then releasing in 2014 is not an option. They cannot allow MS to build an XBLG userbase who will draw their friends onto Xbox.

The power isn't that important, what will matter is games (and to a lesser degree online cost)

If microsoft can put some interesting exclusive games in their lineup it'll be a good battle

Sucks about European launch if true
