EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

There is no recent rumor about anti-used-games being implemented in PS4 while EDGE rumor says that it will be in Microsoft's next console. Sony has researched and applied for a patent regarding technology that could be used to do it, but nothing says that it will be implemented. Patents are submitted every waking moment, but only a fraction of them ever are used.

So because the rumor for X720 is newer that gives it more credibility somehow? If that were true why hasn't Microsoft submitted a similar patent?

First off, I will be patient and wait for the reveals before making a decision .

As for the rumor of no used games. Think about it from a publishing standpoint. A system where the consumer has to buy the game new means more $ for them. I'll tell you what, if I spent 50 million making a game and every game sold meant I got a royalty because they were new, I would definitely go with that system. Im playing devil's advocate, but an EA or Activision would love that.

In fact, if only one system did that, as a publisher, I would take more of a risk with the system that doesn't play used games than one that does.

Think about it and follow the money.

Maturity, bitches.
I don't see anything wrong from it. Why should people be allowed to fully experince and play a game because they paid $2 to rent them, or their friends let them borrow them? Why should they have the right to play it when they didn't give the Developer/Publisher any money for the good they made?

Sounds like someone wasn't allow to borrow games from their friends. Sucks to be you I guess.

This is interesting...This us fucking interesting

Now if I remember correctly sony has a no used games patent as well tho? But Tretton stated he was against a patent.

So either Sony is following suit or they threw everyone off on purpose with that patent

Sony has hundreds of patents they never even use. Look at all the silly move related patents. It sill does increase the chance of them using a anti-used games system.

I'm going to assume you're just trolling, because this is one of the most naive/absurd thing I've ever read on the internet (which is saying a lot).

Starting to lean Orbis ...this coming from someone who just bought a Ps3 a few days ago and have been with xbox from jump.

Edit: Orbis might be rocking this shit as well?

Time to build dat next gen PC

WTF Microsoft. Seriously? -_- I really hope Sony takes another route with this bullshit.

I'll still buy it. Too invested into the Xbox LIve ecosystem to not upgrade without feeling regret.

Might I ask GAF, what exactly is a legitimate reason for hating " No used games"?

You guys act as if games only have a set price of New - $60 and Used - $55, and only used copies go down in price. New games take price drops within the first few months. Why don't you guys who want to save money, do what people do on Steam and wait for a sale/price drop in 2 months, and buy the game. Or just support the developer and buy new at launch for $60.

Really now...

No second hand games would also mean full price control. Why selling a game for 20 oder 30$ if you can sell it for 60$? There will be no reason to reduce the price.

Nah mate. There will always be competition on pricing. Most of the pricing we see these days isn't a result of 2nd hand titles being out there.

This would actually benefit online retailers such as Amazon or specialists such as Shop.to (UK store if you aint a Brit) who don't rely on trade ins to sell their games. Who this would effect are stores such as Gamestop or Game who make a large percentage of their money through selling pre-owned games.

I don't have a problem with stores selling pre-owned games. I do have a problem with the ridiculous margin they make out of them. e.g. Selling a pre-owned title £2 cheaper than the brand new one.

If this news is true... Magic 8 Ball, should I skip this console?

I don't get the people arguing that people are overreacting to a rumour. I'm pretty sure everyone is aware that none of this could prove to be true. Everyone is simply saying "If this is true, here's how I feel about it."

So a new boxed game will come with a one time use activation code and will be entered the first time you launch the game to let you play it. Every time you launch it there after it does a check sees it there...maybe.

What happens if my new Xbox 720 gets the equivalent to the rrod? Are activation codes tied to my account or console?

Also the need to always be online is poor. I can play my steam games in offline mode no problem as the UK has pretty shitty Internet and my connection just isn't stable :(

Well, the activation would probably be tied to your Live Account, not your system I would assume.

What's odd to me is that this is the weirdest way to do it. I figured they'd just double down on online passes and the like - start locking significant content behind codes that only come with new copies. Was this not working well enough? Did they find people buying used didn't give a fuck or that the $10 to download it wasn't enough?

Putting a giant wall seems like a massive overreaction when they've just been putting scalable walls for the last few years.

Microsoft is in the "putting up walls" business. It's what they excel at.

I think it's safe to say that this is shaping up to be the worse console generation ever if this is true.

What's scary about this thread isn't really people acting like it's true but people actually defending it!

Which still gives no credibility to the rumor, they went to the casuals to gain a demographic why would they kill offline support and destroy their demographic?

Those of you who are comparing these restrictions to a PC are ignoring the simple fact that these are two very different markets and playerbases.

From what I understand, Sony is currently using their older anti-used games tech to give away a free copy of the Vita version of certain PS3 games, and possibly starting to use it for online passes as well. They're setting it up so you just have to select something in the game's menu instead of having to go into the PSN store and input a code.

But the technology to do that requires Blu-ray discs have a unique ID that can be tied to an online account. Since that exists at the replicator level (I believe the now-dead Managed Copy for movies required the same thing), MS can use it in their next system. Doesn't necessarily mean they'll use it for completely shutting down used games, they could simply use it for online codes or other incentives, without completely getting rid of the ability to play the used game.

Pretty much everything else does this already; I can't trade my Steam or Origin games in, I can't trade my WP8 Apps or games in, I can't trade my other half's iTunes content in...

There is no way MS will put themselves at a handicap from the start,if PS4 does support used games MS will have to face a lot of bad press for the 720.

Sony is currently charging £60 for digital games on its store, that Amazon sell as an actual retail product for £37.

It makes no sense.

If true there is no chance MS is doing this alone. They've obviously teamed up with Sony to stamp out the second hand market.

Doesn't bother me though. I hardly ever buy/sell second hand games. Sucks for people who rent games.

HERE IS WHAT PATCHER HAS TO SAY ON THE SUBJECT OF USED GAMES IN NEXTGEN CYCLE:
http://www.gametrailers.com/videos/hhgq98/pach-attack--why-all-the-gamestop-hate-

This time, he is 10000% right.

Scary. He almost sounds reasonable.

Add it to the percent of people without high-speed internet access, and MS has themselves a huge problem.

Just speculating here....

In 2013, if a customer wants an off line experience, they are more than welcome to buy and play a 360.

5 years from now, high speed internet is going to be more common than it is now. Especially outside of the US. Microsoft is building for that customer.

Many many months ago I wrote that I'm certain that used games will be a possibility. MS and Sony are just going to make the disc itself an information carrier and of little value in and of itself.

You walk into gamespot and all the used games are $5. You buy the disc, take it home and MS then sells you a $15 activation code. Gamespot gets what they deserve, and MS, pubs, and devs get what they deserve. Everyone gets a cut and everyone on the business side is "happy"

Pretty much. They would be actively cutting out potential costumers. I know MS is supposed to be "lol EVOL" and stuff but this would be basically killing their own sales.

If they envision the console having a 7+ year life span like the 360 they might think that the short term pain at the start is worth it in the long run.

They'd be wrong but that's what they might think.

Different MArkets and playerbases, but it's exactly the same way the software will be handled. I just hope MS/Sony can offer teh same type of Steam sales to help consumers get games cheaper, if not, this is all a joke.

Those of you who are comparing these restrictions to a PC are ignoring the simple fact that these are two very different markets and playerbases.

Also ignoring the fact that not allowing used games on PC is just an unfortunate side effect of fighting piracy.

On PC, they're trying to stop people from playing games illegally.

On console, they're trying to stop people from legally playing used games.

It's a world of difference.

If this is true maybe borrowed/bought used games would have a free trial period or something (like an hour or two of gameplay) and then you'd be prompted $10 to unlock the game or you'd be booted out. And maybe rented games would be special versions where you get a code from Red Box/Gamefly to put in to unlock the rest of the game, but it lasts a limited period of time (a few days).

Sucks about not being able to play used games. Lately, I've been buying a lot more new games than used but I do enjoy trading those new games in towards other new games. Takes some money off the price. If I can't do that, it's no big deal but it's always nice to save some cash.

It's not the fact that it's newer, it's that there is a reported rumor about it being implemented versus just having a patent submitted for approval. And based of the EDGE rumor it wouldn't seem as though Microsoft is using new technology to implement anti-used games, thus no patent required.

I'm not in the business of selling used games, I'm a gamer so I couldn't care less about the second hand game thing.

The need to be always online is worrying though. I guess it's no different from Steam, though I do hear they have an offline mode now. I also hear it sucks for whatever reason though.

People are willing to be bent over the table to be fed scraps once in a while, it seems. ;)

You, as a consumer, have more options in all of those marketplaces than what you do in the console sphere. Why do people make such a shoddy comparison when they attempt supporting this?

Though the architectures of the next-gen Xbox and PlayStation both resemble that of PCs, several development sources have told us that Sony’s solution is preferable when it comes to leveraging power. Studios working with the next-gen Xbox are currently being forced to work with only approved development libraries, while Sony is encouraging coders to get closer to the metal of its box. Furthermore, the operating system overhead of Microsoft’s next console is more oppressive than Sony’s equivalent, giving the PlayStation-badged unit another advantage.

As someone who also plays PC games, I'm used to DRM codes. (Always online is bullshit if true though). The above concerns me more. Everything I've read in rumors and reports suggests that the PS4 is more powerful. The above suggests that is true, as well indications that it's easier to develop for. Every day, PS4 is looking more attractive. If everything comes to pass as reported, PS4 will probbaly be me my main console while Xbox Next will my CoD console that I only play when my few IRL friends who still game play online.
