EDGE: The next Xbox: Always online, no second-hand games, 50GB Blu-ray and new kinect

The question I have is that if they implement all these changes for next gen games what does it mean for backwards compatibility? It kind of contradicts everything the console is about.

I can't imagine Sony/MS doing this without knowing the other is doing it. Just doesn't make sense but I'm not convinced this will happen with either. If so, my guess is Wii U will get a boost in sales and more people will be looking to make the jump to PC gaming, IMO.

I am glad someone else gets it. 1 won't do it with out the other also doing it. I just hope they can't come to an agreement on this so it does not happen. No chance in hell most of us pay 59.99 for a disk rental.

This can't be real. Can it?

I think everyone here collectively is hoping this is not true, but considering the insane things we have seen in the past (N64 carts over CDs, PS3 599 etc.) this would not really be as shocking when you look at the industry as a whole.

EDGE is a pretty reputable source, still we have to hope that they either misunderstood/poorly worded something or are just plain wrong.

Simple logic, if MS is doing this potentially bad looking move, it's because the publishers forced them to. Which means they'll be forcing Sony to do the same.

And most all PC ports of multiplatform games will be always online too. People thinking PC platform is going to be some bastion of hope are delusional. This will be an industry wide change, ESPECIALLY if it comes to consoles first.

edit. Exception aside of course, there will still be PC developers who will not use always online, but you can bet they'll use that as a marketing feature to sell their game.

Hmmm... I somehow don't buy this. Not saying anything about the messenger... but the message sounds like the worst move in console gaming history.

If true - you can bet Sony follows suit.

So if I have an Xbox, and I go over to my buddies house to play games on his Xbox, I can't bring any of my games over because they won't play on his machine? That's ass....

They actually do comment on rumours: if they explicitly say "this is incorrect", then you can conclude that the rumour is incorrect. If they don't attempt to deny it, then you can conclude that the rumour has a grain of truth in it.

No you can't there are plenty of rumors that they've said that they won't respond to rumors or speculation that haven't come true.

Rumor: The Xbox 360 is coming out on November 4.

Answer: "Microsoft has made no official announcements regarding the release date for the Xbox 360. We do not comment on rumor or speculation."--Microsoft spokesperson.

Fact: False

Rumor: Halo 3 is coming out on November 16.

Answer: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation."--Microsoft rep.

Fact: False

Rumor: Microsoft buying CAPCOM

Answer: "Microsoft does not comment on rumors or speculation." -- Microsoft rep

Fact: False

Your logic isn't doing very well here.... It's a generic response to just about all rumors put forth to Microsoft it has no basis on truth of the rumor.

Really don't want always online. Sometimes my internet likes to shit itself. Me and a friend also trade games too so the no second hand deal would also suck.

I'll be waiting a bit to buy if this ends up being true.

At the same time I can't see Sony NOT doing something of the same type. Their ace in the hole tho is PSN+.

IF they make PSN+ like a redbox/steam where shit is discounted and on sale then it might work. MS will probably have to or try to do something like that as well.

This bullshit needs to stop.

You're no more of a gamer than I am. You're no more of a gamer than most people. Your "no true Scotsman" shit just makes it seem like you're more of an asshole than a lot of people, but more a gamer? No.

Because you've never bought or sold a used game does not make you more of anything except more of someone who has never bought or sold a game used game. The fact that you think that makes you more of a gamer is pretty fucking sad.
When did I say I was more of anything than anybody else? I simply said that MS' used game idea doesn't effect me one bit. I don't buy a game because of the possibility to get money back from it. I buy games because I enjoy playing games. No other reasons for incentives are needed for me to enjoy my favorite hobby.

Take it as you will.

no 2nd hand games. I thought that was a sony thing.

How is this thing going to deal with game rentals if true.

I refuse to believe its true. NEW XBOMB if true.

I see people still in full on console warrior mode, and it seems that's the real reason certain people want to believe this is true, despite the sheer stupidity of it. Basic common sense makes it a bit hard for me to believe these rumors, but some want to believe it so to them its facts.
Also a patent is something that they actively filed for, so yes it holds more weight for me than hearsay. Personally i don't see any of them being dumb enough to actually do something like that.
Good for you, just no need act obnoxious to people who want to believe a respected site over patents, especially since many patents get filed and nothing comes of it. Your entitled to take patents over 'hearsay' if you want.

This is terrible news... I guess I am always connected, but no second hand games, or even borrowing games from a friend? I don't think I'll be getting an XBOX any more...

How ignorant. Third parties will only use this for further justification of draconian DRM on PC as well for parity, especially when always-online becomes integrated into game's featuresets to make it further justifiable.

I read this and I immediately thought of Diablo III..... a chill ran up my spine.

This is not the future I want. Not at all.

Just because something isn't mentioned doesn't mean it isn't true, we have heard reports that both are looking into blocking used games.

Honestly, how much easier is it for the average person to go to a local B&M store than to deal with craigslist/ebay/what have you? That's why they're raking in so much money from used games, and I just can't be OK with that.

I personally don't care about selling my used games (nor do I really have gamer friends from whom I can borrow stuff), so for me this is a non-issue.

You would run a business the same way. Ask that company who opened online like a year ago with noble attentions how they are doing. Some games will have drastically lower tivs because they dont sell right away and languish on the shelves till they are 20 - 30 deep and are $20 new. Some will have $30 tiv and there is always some trade in promotion going on at gamestop to get more, if someone got just base value its really their own fault. It only takes a minute to look at the CAG trade in thread.

Point is game prices drop so erraticaly and drastically you are losing money left and right to buy games for the $45 people are wishing when it sells new next week for $35. I really dont understand how people still dont get this.

This is the future. People will complain, just like they did when Steam first launched. Now that platform is accepted, even loved by the majority of PC fans. Consolites will get on board sooner rather than later.

This is why its fucking fake. This move makes no sense and no leaks stated this shit anyhow besides this article that's feeding the February 20th ps4 hype train. I seriously call bullshit.

Just because something doesn't have an effect on you doesn't mean you should be OK with it. That is horrible logic.

Isn't Steam, as a free platform, smaller than the 360 install base, which is a paid platform?

You can bet that is the perspective both companies are looking at. They don't care that you borrow games or use Redbox exclusively. That [purchaser] makes them no money.

Technically Redbox buys rental copies from the publisher for higher prices to make use of them for longer periods of time.

So they probably make money off me, but might not make money off the 25th person to rent that copy.

Yeah, I realize I can't re-sell or lend my Steam or XBLA games but most of them I have purchased for less than $10. If I can buy games on the Nextbox for $10, I'll consider it.

Yeah, if the trade off is steam like holiday sales, I could get behind it. Honestly if a game system and a game doesn't have a whack control scheme, I will put up with BS to play it.

Does it suck that I can't get games I am mildly interested in for cheaper second hand instead of risking a full price purchase?

Yes

Is it inevitable?

Absolutely

I think both consoles can leverage a lot of this by creating a purchasing ecosystem much like Steam:

-Great preorder bonuses and discounts
-Games at a variety of prices
-Full game demo access

Some of you guys wouldn't even purchase a wii u even if there was third party support and none of these incidents occur on it, some may flee to pc.

I honestly believe that many of you will still buy the consoles even if it is true.

Presumably most people want to believe it's true because a well-respected source is proclaiming it in a matter-of-fact manner as slated for a specific upcoming product, as opposed to being yet another wacky output of the same SCE patent mill which that comes up with things like interactive TV commercials and foot-mounted Moves that never reach market.

You are the exact people they are trying to get rid of

Not every gamer is rich and some people like to be able to buy multiple games in a relatively short time frame. Not everyone buys only 1 game a year. Not everyone wants to blow $60-$70 on a new unproven IP or franchise. If you do not like the game or if you get bored of it quick, you re stuck with it. Demos are not always indicative of the final product either. Plain and simple, if companies even consider getting rid of used games which imo is anti-consumer, they need to lower game prices to more reasonable prices. We had so many bombs and studio closings this generation where you can actually get rid of the game if you weren't satisfied with it. What's going to happen when games cost more to procure and you cannot get rid of them or try them out?

Yep, this. I find it bizarre Xbox fans are defending this by trying to compare it to PC.

What I find bizarre is that people think there isn't a fair comparison to be made.

If Steam and PC games with serial codes hadn't set the precedent for this, MS wouldn't be making this move.

After thinking about some more if they do this but work out a system where i can still lend games to friends or exchange serials in some way .
That would make things much easier for people to accept but with they way how this sounds now it not looking good.

After a generation is over, do you ever seek out games you missed out the first time? Games that are out of print and out of stock at retail?

Exactly. PC games had always-online bullshit way before consoles. And now/if consoles have it too, this just makes it easier for third parties to slap this DRM on their games and add elements into them to make sure you HAVE to be always online. To unify this as a new norm in gaming. Jim Sterling doesn't know what he's on about. PC is not immune to these practices, it spearheaded them.

You don't have to be online to play games on Steam. Steam itself will allow you to play your games in offline mode it depends on the games themselves if the DRM blocks online play.

I was amazed at people defending the revolting trend for DLC 5yrs ago, some people will defend anything.

I like DLC...
