ELDEN RING | Reviews Mega Thread

Hell yeah super stoked to see these scores! My son doesn't want me to touch it until my wife and i can run through the Witch Queen story with him though ahhhhh

I'm looking forward to exploration more than anything. I really like the style of FS's games and their world building and subtle lore.

However, and this is just a me thing, but I've never really liked the combat in FS's games. I've beaten the Souls games and Bloodborne. Never beat Sekiro, but played some of it. Maybe it's just because I grew up playing JRPGs and prefer more diverse complicated battle systems, but the combat in Souls games I've always found very mediocre. I mean it's fine, it's not a negative, but I find it boring. Once I get to the end of a Souls game I just feel like skipping over regular enemies just to get to the bosses. I'm curious how I'm going to feel in a game like this that is much larger and longer if the combat hasn't evolved all that much from Souls games.

If I got tired of the dodging and blocking after 40 hours, and this game is 80+ hours for completionists, I want to see how it plays out for me. Regardless, I always stick the games through to the end because I like everything else it offers a great deal aside from their combat.
Most of From souls games have boring combat you can never mention it before a souls fanboys pulls out the actually card and trys to explain how its deep even at a technical level all you have to do in From souls games is Mash R1/RB, Block and Roll weapons all feel the same there is barely any pluses or minuses unless the weapon has a status element added to it or it does insane Blunt damage. The only thing you have to care about is the weapons range and thats it most of the time you will never need more than to use 2 to 3 hits at a time. Nioh and code vein fixed almost all of the problams I have with souls combat and the very limited moveset the dark souls and demon souls games have. Bloodborne and Sekiro have a way better combat system then any of the DE or DK games.

Wow. Not that reviews scores is everything but this is really impressive. I’ve never played a From Soft game to finish. Tried with Blood Borne and it didn’t really click with me. Hope this will!

If Elden Ring sticks with you to the end, I hope you'll give BB another chance. :messenger_fistbump:

I knew this'd get some crazy review scores but holy shit

Never really been a big Souls fan (I've been meaning to get into Bloodborne for like a year now) but I think I'll definitely pick this up at some point. Great job to all those working at From Soft!

decided to not watch reviews but i do hope that this game really is another breath of the wild in terms of freedom of approach and depth gameplay loop

This is true, but even without playing a game I can watch it and be like "oh man, I can't wait to get my hands on this." This would be the first time ever in history that a game that's supposed to be this good isn't connecting with me in anyway. It's literally bizarre to me.

From Software games are not for everyone, but for those for whom these titles click -and their circle grows with each release-, the experience is just heavenly.

99% of games don't have a good story and we overlook it.

Souls games, at least, have unique stories that are tailored for gaming and not trying to be a different form of media.
souls games dont have a good story but forbidden west has a good story in which ur the typical hero that does whatever she wants

its funny how nobody doubted the high ratings of forbidden west but with elden ring people need to see more gameplay because there is no way that its really that good to deserve a 97 metacritic

GRRM should just publish a 3 page novel called The Winds of Winter;

Bran woke up and it was all a dream. He turned on his PS5 and played Elden Ring with the squad. The end.
His joke is he'll have a giant meteor hit the planet and kill everyone for his cop out ending.

The hidden secret of Dark Souls all along is that it's literally just a copy of Twilight Princess combat and Z-Targeting with a stamina system added. There's no real puzzles or useful items on par with the items in most Zelda games, but there's spells. No real puzzles, but the world design is great and promotes exploration. Dark Souls is literally just adult Zelda in a lot of ways. Everyone is going to carefully compare the open world design to BotW and other open world games.

Now I wonder how is the story and characters is it similar to souls games, I mean they have GOT guy writing and shit??

While the metascore indicates that this is still in the GOTY race, i don't think it's a closed match. The last game that obtained the same score and acclaim was Red Redemption 2, and it was absolutely murdered by God of war at the end of the year.

this year will also have God of war as a contender.

I guess everyone reviewed the game on PS5.

That’s some super rough performance on Xbox. Is that even playable? But I guess thats sorta expected Fromsoftware. I don’t even have high standards, a stable 30fps is enough for me.

The story will be more coherent and with less plot holes...

The lore and back story was written by GOT guy , From built the game based on it.

This reads like someone who has literally no idea what they are talking about.

Combat being boring or fun is highly dependent on the person. It certainly isn’t overly flashy and relies more on skill and forethought than something like, say Horizon which is “point and click big glowy bits!”

As for “Mashing” buttons, that leads you to dying more often than not. You have to gauge what weapon is best used for the arena. Great swords for example are terrible in very confined spaces, but a polearm, rapier, or dagger? Much more useful. Then you also have to decide what is the best weapon based on your stats. Sure that Polearm may be nice, but without proper dexterity, you may as well be hitting them with a pool noodle. Then you also have to consider the enemy themselves. Is it an enemy that has high defense? Would a piercing weapon be more effective? What about blunt? Are they weak to fire? Rot?

Now whether this style of game interests you is one thing. Claiming it doesn’t have depth is another. Now the limited move pool in earlier games, I can completely understand - but that was mostly fixed from DS2 onwards, arguably even as early as DS. From jumping to new weapon types, enemy types, utilizing the environment more in the metroidvania-esque design, they added more and more with each entry.

Only retards (console warriors, children who need validation for purchases) care about GotY.

To this day I cannot understand why people put so much stock in someone else's opinion just because they work at a company that allows them to give games a grade.
It is their opinion after all. We have so many resources now to figure out if we will like a game or not.

If someone else places a high value in a specific game, why does that matter so much?

Yeah, 100% this. Souls games have very basic and shallow combat system, Nioh shits all over it and it's not even a contest.

I agree, people put way too much weight on "scores", some people think just because game gets 9 or 10 they gonna automatically like the game and then come in gaming forums and call it "overrated" just because they personally didn't enjoy the game as much as others.

Its very easy to understand, honestly. It all boils down to two types of people.

1.) Console Warriors - people who need reasons to show “Hey look this exclusive/this version is better on MY platform of choice! Compared to that other platform that I can’t afford (and am totally not trying to shit on so I don’t feel like I am missing out on anything), mine is soooo much better! Also I am a retard!”

2.) Children who need validation for their purchases - People who don’t want to feel like their purchase, their preorder, was in vein. They don’t trust themselves enough to do research or trust their own personal opinions so they have to ride on other peoples opinions to validate their own. All console warriors are children who need validation for their purchases, but not vice versa.

The problem is their combat in all their games feels the same. If it evolved a lot from game to game it wouldn't feel that way. But playing all the Souls games, it feels like I'm playing the same game just in a new setting. I've just gotten bored with Souls combat, and my concern for this game is I'm going to get major burnout of their combat in their longest game yet.

When I first played Bloodborne I was expecting something like DMC which is more fast paced and that was my fault for not approaching the game as it is. That being said I prefer more fast paced combat.

Cringe Reaction GIF by MOODMAN

On topic, I've mostly stayed out of every Elden Ring thread to avoid spoilers, but I'm happy that the game is garnering universal praise. I scanned the reviews quickly on the first page and saw that dreaded "accessibility" word, but it sounds like they just meant that you can move on to another area if you can't beat the current one, not that the game got easier. I'll try to stop being such a joyless prick to those asking for an easier path through the game in honor of this momentous release.

Cannot fucking wait.
