ELDEN RING | Reviews Mega Thread

It's not about attention. It's literally me trying to get somebody to send me something that helps me see something from this game that I haven't been able to see in countless videos.

Where is THIS video from Elden Ring to make me care about the world and story the way Sekiro did? I don't doubt the combat and gameplay will be amazing. I don't doubt the world will be well built and rich with underlying lore. But damn, can they tell a brotha the story, the reason why I'm playing this shit? I don't think I should literally have to spend money first to get a better idea of what will motivate me to want to keep playing. They can't just be thinking it's just our bosses and our combat and enemy AI alone that will make people keep going? Maybe they do, but I need more than that.

So stay home. No one will miss you in the Lands Between. There are plenty of other games, go play them. Everyone else managed to get hyped already, as others have said, so maybe it isn't for you.

Yeah I don't think I'm ready for this game. I saw more bosses just glancing at the screen of the ign review than I've encountered in most games. Still playing Horizon and I want Stranger of Paradise next month.

Souls fans don't really care about looks or the technical stuff and that is not a bad thing. It is not their priority. Anyway this looks like it is not for me but have fun folks and enjoy it.
Souls fans no, but when it comes to reviews you can't just set different criteria for different games just cause.

Not a single review mentions it that i've read, its a bit of a joke not to knock it for things like that.

Reviews also mention how formulaic it is from past souls games which is never a knock to it but it is to other games?

Seems a bit hypocritical when people want to call it one of the greatest games ever...

I'm looking forward to exploration more than anything. I really like the style of FS's games and their world building and subtle lore.

However, and this is just a me thing, but I've never really liked the combat in FS's games. I've beaten the Souls games and Bloodborne. Never beat Sekiro, but played some of it. Maybe it's just because I grew up playing JRPGs and prefer more diverse complicated battle systems, but the combat in Souls games I've always found very mediocre. I mean it's fine, it's not a negative, but I find it boring. Once I get to the end of a Souls game I just feel like skipping over regular enemies just to get to the bosses. I'm curious how I'm going to feel in a game like this that is much larger and longer if the combat hasn't evolved all that much from Souls games.

If I got tired of the dodging and blocking after 40 hours, and this game is 80+ hours for completionists, I want to see how it plays out for me. Regardless, I always stick the games through to the end because I like everything else it offers a great deal aside from their combat.

Horizon is cursed. Don't get me wrong, it seems to be fantastic, gorgeous looking and I'm sure will sell millions, I'll definitely be playing it at some point.
But damn.

There’s nothing cursed about selling 20M copies and having a universally praised critical rating

Doubtful Elden Ring will come close to the LTD sales of horizon. It just doesn’t have the same broad appeal, and that’s fine

Either way we’re feasting all around. Why does it always have to be a neckbeard competition?

Was there any doubt? This is the culmination of all froms work this is what they envisioned for the franchise but was never given the budget to do. This will be the best game released this year. Horizon somehow found a way to get overshadowed again.

I’m gonna correct you right now:
Most players don’t care about technical stuff.
But they do care if the games look good.
And even then, they play it if they find the game fun.

Horizons sequel released?

Trust me, you're not nuts. Look at all the posts in here saying they didn't expect these scores. Im reserving judgment until I play though. Obviously I can't say shit until I see the game. It may just be that awesome. It probably is with all these reviews.

I've just decided to sit down and watch one of the bigger content creator's review. Randomly picked the skill up 30 minute review. And he's, surprise, been limited to showing ONLY the same stuff we've already seen up to this point, and nothing else, but I'm just 10 minutes in.

So we shall see.

I tease and I get what you're saying man, but honestly, I don't know what to tell you. With all that's been put out, if you're looking at it and not feeling the way that Sekiro video made you feel. Then I guess it just isn't for you. The story, much like majority of the Souls titles, is placed throughout the experience. You basically start as a no one, and become something. That doesn't seem to be changing here. This big difference between the games and Sekiro, is that Sekiro revolved around a protagonist the player controlled that already had a background and story. No custom character, etc.
Every source on Metacritic/Opencritic is pressured by the same forces to score the game highly.

All 99 critics on Opencritic benefit from having early access to Elden Ring as it draws traffic to their site. Essentially they're all Greg Millers.

There are waaaaay more than 99 people who wanted early access to Elden Ring. From Software selected the reviewers who they believed would benefit them the most.

That's why all gaming media has essentially become enthusiast media. The outlets who are more critical of games get cockblocked by these big publishers. "Praise me or be shunned."

Opencritic/Metacritic should allow the public to set parameters to reviews that only get sent a month or two after release. When critics are forced to buy their own games, and don't benefit from early access, it would give the public more balanced scores.
I see what you're saying. I guess I just said what I said because I honestly don't bother with metacritic or opencritic. If anything, I go to look and see what the hubbub is about, look at the percentages and move on. I don't want to give clicks to random outlets and sites I've never heard of.

I suppose so, but I also think it's just the standard approach of, "If this person is a content creator/influencer that does decent numbers, send them a key." I mean, there are plenty of those people that had access that don't have top YouTube or Twitch numbers. I mean, both SkillUp and ACG are great examples, and they're just two, there are far more that do less traffic than them that had access.

I mean, more options are always good. But that wouldn't automatically equate "balanced scores."

Just because the overall sentiment is extremely positive doesn't mean every single review (or the majority) is "fixed", maybe these people really are just enjoying the title THAT much? I mean, do we really need some negative, average, or neutral reviews for it to feel "fair" or "balanced"? I mean, they're just "professional" opinions.

Regardless, I'm sure there will be plenty of those when the game launches anyway. Lord knows there will be people that don't like this or that, etc.

Can we please this time just let Horizon and ER stand on their own two and not make it a competition. They aren't even aiming for the same audience. It's like comparing a jazz album with a death metal album. Let's not repeat 2017 though I know we will.

For real, BOTW2 might still release this year. We all knew the 2022 lineup was gonna be bananas, but...
Multi platform owners are the real winners, like holy crap, this year is going to be absolutely wild!

Potential GOTY contenders:
1. Elden Ring
Starfield
Zelda Breath of the Wild 2
God of War Ragnarök
Horizon Forbidden West
GT7
Possibly something we don’t know about yet.

I doubt most DS fans can tell you the actual plot of the games beyond you fight to rekindle the fire or bring forth the dark ages. :messenger_winking_tongue:

Doubt most can tell you the story of Bloodborne either... 👀

This is likely what's fucking with me lol. As I'm watching more of skill up's review, I guess I'm learning to just see it as elder scrolls, but with better combat. But an Elder Scrolls with less of an explicit main story narrative, but a game where you just go out into the world, and it's as you play the game some element of a story is pieced together for you, and you will make of that story what you will, but they don't seem to attempt any traditional storytelling methods with specific characters or cutscenes or any of that by the looks of it? I love games where you discover and read up on lore that you find, and lore that you get from various adventures and quests, but I usually like there to be a main story to accompany all of that.

Humm... all Soulslike games have amazing story.
That is one of the strong points in Miyazaki.

The Easy Allies review basically is describing Dark Souls almost as if this is a carbon copy.

But they do say the open world is awesome and the content feels hand crafted from beginning to end.

Its going to feel very iterative and similar, but good. I was hoping for more originality personally, but thats what the game looks like. Dark Souls 4: Dark Harder.

I couldn't care less about the story and, aside from BB, you're arriving at the game at the end of times... you can discover what happened and I honestly always found the lore dull.
I don't play these games for this anyway.

The average review score is 10 points higher than I expected. I thought a Souls game couldn’t have such broad appeal. Now I wished I had waited to start Horizon FW.

I have the game pre ordered, but I agree

People give some games a pass because they are popular or very hyped

It looks just like Dark Souls art wise. Doesnt look like a new IP like Sekiro or Bloodborne did.

Gameplay wise, it also seems to play just like a Dark Souls game, where Sekiro and Bloodborne had their own flavor.

Technical problems also should be noted and etc.

Its going to be a great game, I know, but dismissing a lot of those stuff that I mentioned makes me roll my eyes a lil bit

It’s just bad luck really, Horizon always deserved a GOTY but last time it went up against BOTW, this time it goes up against Elden Ring.

Bethesda will have to adjust to a second place too this time. I love them and their games but I can’t see any realistic scenario where Starfield beats a game like Elden Ring in the same genre. I haven’t seen this many 10/10 from people I trust and even harsh critics since BOTW, which was such a powerful release that some other dev asked if it was even made by humans lol

It's a slower paced game and I appreciate all of the little nuances. I don't need every single game to be hyper unrealistic in split second reflexes.

The story was fantastic as well.

Totally agree. I mean hell, I even often just walked while searching houses or through towns instead of running like I would do in many other games, simply because it felt right to be this slower cowboy. xD

The aggregated scores are a full grade above what I thought the top range of most scores would be. I think this just moved from wait for sale to preorder status. no experience with these games, but the Eurogamer review leads me to believe that doesn’t matter too much.

It's reading as one of the greatest games of all time!

I think that’s fair

My gripe with the Souls reviews is that every single outlet gives the review to somebody who is already a Souls fanatic because these games just aren’t for everyone and in order to rush a review you’re going to give it to a Souls veteran.

So I think there’s legitimate score inflation here as a result. Other titles get reviewed by a more widely diverse set of tastes in general

And I say this as someone that expects Elden Ring to be my personal GOTY

It's intriguing but you likely won't understand what's really going on in a casual playthrough. You'll have to watch videos to get a better picture.
That's the charm about these games. They leave it mysterious, but just enough for the community to go on another form of meta with lore hunting, filling in the gaps, and the like.

I don't need every game to hold my hand and explain it to me like I am 5, essentially. Reminds me of the old school days of gaming before CDs and 3D in that regards.

Is it bad luck though? They are just two different games releasing at the same time. It’s not going to have an impact on the success of either title

This year is going to be jam packed with such releases

For people that want to look at an early comparison of all versions -

PS5 version runs the best in the 55-60fps range most of the time.
None of the modes are locked though, including the 30fps quality modes, which is pretty weird and shit really.. And even the best version in PS5 can be anywhere from 50-60fps. Series S hovers around 50fps, and XSX version sems to be in the 40-50fps range, and actually performs worse than the S version.

I dont really think any of the console versions are very good in any mode. I just hope my Dark Souls 3 and Sekiro luck keeps going and i can get a locked 60fps on my PC.

Not very impressive though from From, yet again.
The PS5 version is the one to get out of the consoles though.

I'm surprised at how good it looks and runs on the base PS4. Performance seems to hit a solid 30fps most or the time and it doesn't have that much of a difference to the next gen versions.

Xbox One S on the other hand... Has unintentionally barren-looking environments, due to how much they had to remove. And it still couldn't achieve a solid framerate. I dread to think how it's running on the OG X1.

Cut them some slack on the performance side guys, they've had to deliver 7 sku's of what appears to be a very large and dense open-world game. When you're trying to juggle that many balls getting immaculate performance is a stretch day#1.

So is the coop in this the same as previous souls games?

My brother has beat all of these and loves them to death. I on the other hand like them but have never come close to beating any.

He's under the impression we can coop the whole game. How feasible is that?
