Elite Dangerous: Horizons |OT| Just scratching the surface

crap there is a slot rating system?

I've seen some slots allow more modules while others only allow fewer and lower ranked I guess I'll figure it out. going slow is good advice but I still crash and burn so many rails and towers to hit on the way in it is freaking sadistic

I wonder if there are gamers who could do this landing at full speed like you see in movies
**Stole this explanation from gamefaqs**
Letter rank is worst to best, A being best. Certain stats like heat, weight, and power draw can vary greatly between ranks. The number is class or size. 1 is smallest. Some ships can only fit certain class modules in certain slots. Smaller ships will be greatly limited to class 1 or 2, just for example

I basically just whip it into the spot. I just switched to auto dock today and it's actually kind of nice to be able to put the controller down.
Also God damn is this game big. I didn't realize until I actually zoomed all the way out to the point of seeing the galaxies spiral. Lol off topic but I'm new also so idk if you've noticed that. I'm currently journeying to near the center.

not yet, until I get my engineer ready

I once did a long sightseeing mission and had to call a fuel rat to save me lol

I've got a Dolphin and a Type-6 for the fleet though
Nice! I'm using the type-6 currently. Last time I ran out of fuel I had to self destruct. I felt bad but I like to think my passenger sign a waiver before boarding lol

Seraphis Cain

bad gameplay lol
server issues just as I was on a role making money

You too? Just lost like 350,000cr in bounties due to a server disconnect. Really sucks that bounties and such aren't saved server-side and you can lose them in the event of a disconnect.

EDIT: I restarted the game and my bounties are back. Phew.

So if I interpreted it correctly, exploration is not viable yet in this current version of Elite? That's too bad if true. That's what I was planning on doing.

Why did you get that idea? You can make a good money seeking out earth like and water worlds.

Pretty much what I am doing to make money right now.. plus getting my name on a few planets.

But you can look down and see your body in the fighters...

Unless they just absolutely HAD to put a robot in the fighters, haha.

Again, it's unrealistic, but I don't mind it since it does fit the purposes of the game better. From a gameplay perspective, that would make fighters and hiring pilots completely useless and objectively detrimental.
Nah it's telepresence. Basically a super high fidelity projection of CMDRs that sync and control the ship systems. Projection is maintained so there's no mental disconnect for the pilot or co-pilots. It's used for fighters, the SRV and multi-crew. Only thing that doesn't make sense is why you'd ever leave the safety of the station and board your ship while that tech exists.

Earlier in the thread someone said that's it not nearly as fleshed out as trading and combat; that it was more shallow than the others and a future update plans to improve it. I hope I'm wrong though and I'm happy to hear that your experience contradicts it.

Just got back from work and gym, TIME TO GO BACK TO MY BEAUTIFUL VULTURE. <3

@Kyoufu

I'm going to get to the top 10 in those last 2 CG systems, I'd suggest you do the same, since we're already top 10 in Rakapila, there's no point in fighting there anymore.

just tried the docking computer I'm in LOVE!

okay now to make the credits

what is the best second ship and what is the best end ship?

I think I am going to do trading and taxi service then long range exploring

"Best ship" is whatever you like best. End game you tend to Engineer ships to specialise in particular roles - like a Corvette death tank, a stripped down Anaconda for massive jump range or a gigaton Clipper trader.

Best "second" ship is always the work horse, the dependable multi-role ship. Early on that's the Asp, which doubles the best exploration ship in the game (and just to preempt anyone here - yes an Engineered Conda has overwhelmingly better range, but supercruise maneuverability counts for something... ) or a Python which can do just about anything better than most.

There's more CGs other than Rakapila?

Oh, Eravate and that other one. Yeah, good point.

Oh it's viable, it's just very basic, even after all of this time. Exploration makes good money now if you do it, the problem is there just isn't a lot to do while exploring, as the mechanics of it are simplistic and without much content of any kind. In order to stave off space madness while exploring (tedium and boredom) it's almost required for you to make up your own goals along the way and to use your imagination to make it worthwhile, because the exploration mechanics are just rudimentary as of yet.

Hm, well, is it supposed to get more fun later? Haha, because I could mine now and make a fortune before venturing into deep space later.

Also, are all of the aesthetics for the ships only unlockable through microtransactions? Or am I able to unlock some as I play?

We're hoping the gameplay is expanded post 2.4 when they move back onto the core systems but honestly we have no idea. And the improvements they come up with could be grindy shite. It's really just wait and see.

All aesthetic stuff whether it be ship kits, weapon & engine colors, flight suits, paint jobs, decals are all real money transactions on the store. Well, maybe the rare cases for decals being unlocked per CGs every once in a while.

Hmmm. I'm interested in this game for exploration as well. At the moment No Man's Sky provides that fix, since I can land on every single planet and scan flora and fauna (I'm an ecologist irl, so it's nice doing my job in space) but Elite looks so damn pretty. I'm trying to figure out if I'd get bored/annoyed with never being able to land on the earth like worlds and water worlds that I discover in Elite. I do like nice views and vistas in games though, so I'd still get a lot of enjoyment out of it. I'm just not sure it would hold my interest very long...

NMS gets repetitive but at least has some concrete systems in place for planetary exploration. I don't think I'd enjoy NMS without planetary landings, and I'm not sure what Elite offers to make up for that lack?

Star Citizen seems to have interesting concepts with explorers selling information on jump points, giving you incentives to remap existing warp points to make them more efficient and update them over time. I think I'd need ideas like that for Elite to convince me, rather than just looking at planets but never being allowed to actually explore them.

We're years off from anything resembling NMS on the planet surfaces in terms of life. If ever. As for gameplay it's probably more than a year before any expansion into exploration and like I said earlier the quality of such is completely unknown.

Yeah and they're pretty close to each other, I'll try to get into top 10 in both of them today, hope it works out though I know it's easy to get sidetracked in this game. :d

can you imagine Elite with NMS types of planets? barren rock in Elite is getting boring

I think I will put some hours in tonight on the delivery community goal in Rakapila.
I flew 2 times to another station, needs only 2 jumps for one way, bought 36 clothes twice (cause 36 is the most I can carry at the moment) and I'm already in the top 75%. Here is where the money is. Fuck bounty hunting. :D

Sorry, I probably wasn't clear =P I don't mean I need planet landing, but that I need some kind of mechanic involved in exploration. In NMS that's landing on the planets you discover and scanning wildlife or finding ruins. In Star Citizen they're experimenting with Jump Point mapping. Those are mechanics that provide gameplay to exploration, so it's not just "Ooo what a pretty planet. Now on to the next one." Repeated forever.

Does Elite have a mechanic for something tied to exploration? Or is that still to come in a future patch?

Just pointing out that SC doesn't have ANY jumping right now and it wont have any for years at their pace.

Elite's exploring comes from scanning planets, suns and other anomalies. You get credits based on the type of planet or sequence of star. You get a bonus if you are the first person to scan that celestial object, as well as a tag saying you were the first one to do so.

Cutting edge exploring in Elite is all about the augmented reality aspect of their events. Its about finding weird clues in things and trying to piece them together to find the direction of something hidden by the staff. Its really hardcore stuff that %99.9 of the playerbase will never actively do but I assume its extremely rewarding for those that do.

Holy shit, was gonna pick up the HOTAS 4 today, but looks like Amazon is all out and it's now selling for like $170. Man, really mad I didn't jump on it last week when it was $70

Yep, well aware of that =P But they have some good ideas for active gameplay mechanics related to exploration. NMS has active gameplay with exploration. I just wondered if Elite has any plans for active mechanics or if it's all secretive right now, or simply designed to forever be mostly visual eye candy and no active gameplay.

I don't mind if it isn't available NOW. I'll happily dive in if they have a good design concept for exploration gameplay mechanics.

I think the docking computer is cool, but I'd rather find other useful modules. It was cool to see it in action once or twice, but I was over it after that. The music was a nice touch.

Something you should keep in mind is that is that there isn't always a straight answer of "best ship". Some ships can be straight upgrades over other ships, or a ship could just be a poor man's version of another ship. A few examples of that:

The Asp Scout is kind of a poor man's Asp Explorer.
The Cobra Mk III is a poor man's Cobra Mk IV.

Note: I have never flown an Asp Scout or Cobra Mk IV, so for all I know they could just fly completely different.

I think in some cases where it's not intended to be the case, some ships just eat other ships' lunch in departments. There's still balance issues to be addresssed for sure. For instance, you want a medium class fighter. You technically have options like the Python, Federal Dropship, Federal Gunship, Federal Assault Ship, etc, but for the most part, there's little reason to bother with those over a Fer-De-Lance, if it's a medium-class combat fighter. The others definitely have their upsides, but FDL checks most of the boxes.

Nah, docking is easy, they just need to learn how be gentle with the ship.
My first ever attempt at landing in a station, I took it very slow and gently.

I overshot my landing spot slightly, tried to pull back, instinctively pressed L2 and R2 to try and adjust my speed and began unintentionally shooting up the station before being blown up by the authorities and made to restart right back where I started again.

I'm curious, how to the vertical and horizontal thrusters work on a controller?

Press L3 for alternate control and then you use the right stick. Left right for left right, up down for up down.

Okay, yeah that's a reasonable fashion then.

What I would do is just once you get into the airlock, deploy landing gear and throttle to stop, no matter how far back your landing pad is. Doing it with landing gear deployed makes you slower, and might help a bit with docking.

Bansai, the Eravate CG is pretty bad tbh. Only a fraction of the bounties count towards the CG. I might just pass on this.

Just started this on PS4 and love it, I really miss one of those old button map cards that came with old PC games though. There's just so many button combinations for everything.

How can I access the ingame premium store besides from the PlayStation? I know there is one on the website but this only have real prices, where is the shop with the premium points?

I am having much more fun not crashing my ship docking so I think the slot is well worth it for me

When you store a ship do you have to return to the same station to use it?
