Yea I can foresee a shit storm coming over the no keys given thing.

Honestly, if we don't get steam keys then the ensuing shit storm will make the online only shit storm look like a mild breeze. It makes zero sense to support the game via two launch modes (EDlauncher and Steam). I mean if it's on Steam then why have the launcher at all? Makes zero sense....

Couldn't you just give the key to someone else? I know that's what I would do if they gave me a Steam key... I don't need two versions of the same game.

Also is there really no launcher on the Steam version?

Don't give them ideas, they will use that as an excuse.

I'd redeem it in a heartbeat to get rid of the stupid launcher and add actual features.

Exploration-GAF, help me out. If I come across a start system where the start says "Discovered by X player" but, after scanning a planet in the system, it does NOT say "Discovered by X player", is it safe to assume I'm the first to discover it?

When I converted Kerbal, I was given a Steam key and my first party license was deactivated in one swoop, so no, not if they're smart.

Are you saying this wouldn't happen?

I'm saying it wouldn't have a significant impact on their bottom line, and considering there are in-game purchases, might even be beneficial.

As the post above me says, they aren't the first devs to do this.

Sounds like a pretty good excuse to me... Why would they give away free copies like that just because people feel like they're entitled to a second copy?

Are you saying this wouldn't happen?

Yeah, because all of us would do that, right?

There's something you are missing, though. Frontier needs to have some way of linking Steam purchases with existing Elite accounts, that way you don't need to worry about people giving "free" copies to others.
I paid 75 dollars for this game (which is the most I've paid for any game since I was a kid) and a lot of people paid way more.
So yeah, I feel like I'm entitled to a Steam key. I also feel like that because Braben told Eurogamer that Elite wasn't coming to Steam and now it's here, and all the people who believed him and bought it direct from Frontier's store are now screwed.

I paid 150€, I still don't feel like they have to do it. It would be nice if they did but if you already have access to the game, you don't need another key.

Oh come off it, nobody is "screwed". Everyone that bought ED has a fully licensed copy, no matter where updates come from. You can add ED to Steam as a non-steam game to gain the overlay.

I think the real issue FD is working out is how to move early backers to Steam, since we have rights to DLC that's not released yet. It's like they'd need to make a "season pass" option on steam for us, but the dilemma is that it wouldn't be a purchasable item by anyone else.

I'm sure there are some logistical challenges that will take some time to work out, but until then, kill the hyperbolic language.

Hey guys, i see this is on steam..

Does ED have co-op vehicles..?

Not yet. Talk of that being in the first big expansion, probably fall of '15.

Not yet, but multicrew vehicles are planned. A number of the ships all have co-pilot seats already.

Definitely not screwed, though I think it's a pretty awful business decision. I'm much more likely to buy content from a game using Steams online store as I frequently have money sitting in my Steam wallet.

Depends on how you look at it. I bought the game direct from them because they said it wasn't coming to Steam, so I thought that it was another Blizzard situation and moved on.
Now it's on Steam, even though they said it wouldn't be, and we don't get keys.
And adding Elite as a non steam game isn't the same, I don't know how many times I'll have to say that, but it's not the same. With the "real" steam version you get things like time tracked, ability to upload screens to the steam hub, ability to post a review, ability to stream and be visible in the game hub, ability to post artwork, etc.

I posted this in the other thread:

I may be naive here, I just don't think they anticipated how much demand there would be for getting a Steam key for existing users:

https://forums.frontier.co.uk/showthread.php?t=133500&page=12&p=2044405&viewfull=1#post2044405

I think the push back has been noticed and hopefully it's just a matter of figuring out the logistics. It showed up on Steam kind of out of no where, so they're only getting this feedback after releasing it.

If I had to guess, it's just a matter of time but who knows. I think quality feedback is a good idea if people really want it.

I think it's pretty obvious that Steam wasn't a part of the initial plan but, for whatever reason, was added. It sounds like you're implying they knew from the beginning that they would launch on Steam and this is deceitful in some way, which I really don't think is the case.

In any case, I think they definitely bungled the Steam launch. No announcement, they didn't check with the market/their customers on what they'd like, etc. I have faith that they'll eventually add a key transfer, if it's possible.

Yes, Steam is pretty awesome and you have the right to be disappointed. But not outraged.
You got what you paid for. You have access to the full game. They don't have to give you another copy (or even just transfer your license from their own backend to Steam) just so you have a more convenient way of uploading screenshots.

Well, they told us that there were no plans to launch on Steam and many people (including me) bought their game on FD's store because of that.
Now it turns out that wasn't really true.

I'm out, no sense on discussing something that seemingly only affects some people and for some reason others chime in in support of the offending party.

No one is attacking you--there's no no reason for you to be "out".

I'm saying that their Steam launch was bungled, but just because they don't offer day one key transfers for a platform that wasn't originally going to be supported, doesn't mean they won't be or that they were deceitful.

'We haven't removed any option - as for providing steam keys for people who already own the game we'll look into it and go from there.

Yep. I've come across many worlds like that, and they now have my name on them.

Newsletter 69 out a day early! Powerplay is mentioned (grrr), mostly focuses on drones:

This week on the Elite: Dangerous forums Executive Producer Mike Brookes revealed the first details about the upcoming Powerplay content update, promising a whole new method of interacting with the galaxy and more information in three weeks' time.

Powerplay is our biggest content update yet, adding a number of game-changing features to Elite: Dangerous and offering you new gameplay options whether you prefer the life of a trader, explorer or combat pilot. Some of the new features will be massive; others will be smaller, but no less meaningful.

"One part of Powerplay involves balancing the different roles further," Brookes says. "Part of this is expanding the drone system. Collection drones will be added and will prove useful for pirates needing to gather cargo in a hurry and also to improve mining efficiency."

And a new fuel drone will let players swap fuel while in flight. "Players can act as buddy tankers for each other," Brookes says. "Larger freight ships can carry additional fuel for their escort fighters and extend the effective range of their wing."

Collection Drones work in two ways. In its primary mode, you'll target a cargo canister or mining chunk and launch the drone, which will scoop the object and return it to your open cargo hatch. The secondary mode has an area effect, scooping everything it can before its power expires. Drones are disposable, consumable items you'll have to replenish at a starport, so there's still reason to learn how to use that cargo scoop.

Drones are just one of the smaller upgrades to Elite: Dangerous we'll be making with the massive Powerplay content update. We'll have more in a few weeks; until then, take an early look at the Collection Drone in this week's Newsletter Peek.

I was gonna put this game down until PowerPlay comes out, but with the new influx of players from Steam, I should probably plan a trip to Sol. B-).

Alright, my Thrust Up button on my throttle is broken and it's kinda crucial to combat--I won't even venture into Open mode without it.

I think I'll upgrade, though--I'm familiar enough with the game and using HOTAS that I'd like the additional buttons and build quality.

So, X52 vs X55--go! Is the X55 worth the extra money? If it is, I'm willing to shell it out, but otherwise, I'd be perfectly happy with the X52.

blah, this evening started so good: The first two bounties were worth 100k but it went downhill from there. Almost only sidewinders and eagles, with the occasional adder :|

I have an X55, and I'm very happy with it but I don't think there is anything it offers that would benefit Elite Dangerous more than an X52. I thinks the X55 throttle is it's biggest strength but for Elite Dangerous, dual throttle does nothing for you. It has more buttons as well but if you are using VoiceAttack you won't use many of them, since it handles any function that doesn't require instant responsiveness perfectly.

How is keyboard + mouse controls with this game? With it dropping on Steam I'm considering grabbing it as I need something to fill that Sci Fi itch. Can't justify dropping $60 + the price of a hotas currently though.
