Well after some back and forth with Frontier support, I have my answer for the stuttering in supercruise while approaching a planet and it's pretty much what I expected. They say that it's neither a hardware limitation or network issue but a known issue of which they have yet to determine the cause. It's what I assumed but it's disappointing none the less. I don't have much hope that it will be solved because if anything, after months it has only become worse.

I've had the game for a couple of weeks now. I've been mostly screwing around with my X55 setup and running the tutorials. I've been trying to do bulletin board missions, but they're so random I often find absolutely nothing.

I've got the stock Sidewinder and 35,000 credits. I currently suck at combat. Any suggestions on things I can do?
Wing up with someone who has a better ship and take half the credit for all their bounty kills. Should get you a million or two easy :)

If you'd prefer to do it solo, either:
1. Hunt wanted ships at resource extraction sites. With the help of the police you should do fine. Upgrade your power distributor and shields for this.
2. Take on those smuggling missions to find and return black boxes/rebel transmissions etc. 15k mission reward + several k per extra you find and sell at a black market adds up quick.

I'm bounty hunting in LTT 9810 for the community goal.

Nothing like a CG to bring out the worst in people.

I'm in an area with about six other players. There was a wing of three (player) Imperial Clippers destroying targets.

One of them accidentally shot a clean ship and had a bounty. His two wingmates didn't think twice about blowing him up for the 400 credit bounty.

LOL

On another note as your out where I am, keep an eye out leaving the station if security are attacking a ship destroy it for them, you'll take 100cr fine but the lowest bounty I've had from doing that was 50k, I turned round docked paid off the fine and went back to killing stuff

I did that recently and felt so damn guilty after. Scum of the universe.

Newsletter 71 is out!

Imperial Courier confirmed for 1.3:

courier_cockpit_peek2.jpg

courier_cockpit_peek.jpg

The little dev update doesn't tell us anything more than what we learned yesterday, but let the hype continue to build:

Interstellar (very) high-speed chases are just one of the new things to do in Powerplay, and you haven't seen anything yet.

They're also doing this very cool fan video competition...I may enter it:

Ctrl+Alt+Space is our first ever film competition. We're inviting you to make a video using a piece of original music from Elite: Dangerous composer Erasmus Talbot and an opening title card selected specially for the competition. We want you to be as creative and crazy as you like, and submit your entry by May 8.

Six videos will be selected by Frontier's art and animation teams and we'll put the shortlist to the community to pick an overall winner to be announced soon after the poll closing date on May 15.

The overall winner will take home an Elite: Dangerous video starter kit, with Mad Catz headset, high-end Logitech mouse and keyboard and a video capture card to take your YouTube game to the next level.

The winner will also receive the first ever Elite: Dangerous Community Award – a unique Elite: Dangerous medal awarded exclusively to players who make an outstanding contribution to the community.

For full details on how to enter, hit the competition page, hit Ctrl+Alt+Space in-game and start capturing fast.

I know this is probably frowned upon, but is there an update about the whole steam release thing?

I got it through Steam, but I don't understand the value of adding another launcher on top of the game launcher? Also, it claims I have way more hours played than I do since it tracks the launcher's uptime and not the game itself.

The mining stuff from the newsletter sounds neat. I would be up for flying escort for a miner and/or getting people to escort me while mining as long as they get a shared payment system setup. It didn't sound like they have that setup and it isn't done yet so I will have to wait and see. Plus I have to remind myself that the people running escort will be getting bounties from kills too so that will even it out somewhat.

I ordered the soundtrack last week and it arrived yesterday which was a lot quicker than I expected. I am going to put Elite on the back burner for a while since GTA V is out on the PC and I have been waiting on it since the original release. Ironically that kept me from buying Elite sooner than February because I didn't want to ignore Elite for GTA right after buying it before all of the delays. Now watch them have a big community event and pull me right back in...

If you're escorting you'll make money from bounties, and when the miner sells the cargo you'll get the trade cut no?

Welp, just did something I thought I'd never do in any video game ever: Spent real $ on something that is purely cosmetic.

Pirate faction paint job for the python.

They better deliver on all this powerplay talk. They've been stringing us along for what, almost a month now?
It's hard to be excited about it when all they've told us is how great it is. I've got nothing to go on, and I figure a better than average chance it will be something I just don't give a shit about.

In the meantime, what's the best way to earn moola in combat? Bounty hunting in RES or combat bonds?

If anyone in the vicinity of LTT 9810 wants to wing up, let me know. I'm CMDR exmachina64 in-game.

Really feels like I'm wasting my time there currently. The server's RNG isn't throwing many wanted ships my way and there are six of us fighting for scraps.

I realize that I could rack up bounties in another system and redeem them at Gutierrez Terminal, but that's a hassle.

This has been said before but I'm guessing powerplay is going to be
about player created factions, much like guilds in other MMOs. I'd expect faction quests, possibly even owning outposts and stations. The revamped missions should also open up new jobs such as luxyry transport for the Orca and... whatever the Imperial Courier does.

GAF station?

This works? Because I've been wandering around grabbing at signal sources since there's no RES and it sucks.

Edit: It most certainly will within 50ly of LTT9810 which is good because there's absolutely nothing going on there. Except for piracy; there are a lot of opportunists in the system looking to fuck shit up.

Even in RESs, I've never had the kind of luck some of you guys seem to have.

Borrowed my buddy's T-Flight HOTAS since he wasn't using it. Feel like a newbie all over again. The directional thrusters in particular are kicking my ass.

Still...got through all the tutorial missions, so I'll figure it out. Just hope I don't end up crashing my clipper into an asteroid or something 4k LY from home.

The single biggest thing you can do is to upgrade the power plant. Most people tend to focus on better weapons first which is a mistake. I've only just now got out of the sidewinder into the cobra and there are times I miss the handling and ease of use of the sidewinder even though the Cobra is the better ship for obvious reasons.

The general rule of thumb is to only fly what you can afford to replace.

Flew in a wing for the first time today. Met up with random strangers at LTT 9810's nav beacon and flew together during two separate occasions earlier. Different people both times, teams of four. All of them generally nice; they weren't inclined to use mics.

Made earning credits from the small number of ships that passed through easier because we weren't fighting for credits like dogs fighting over scraps. I didn't know that wings share the bounties and each member gets the total amount as long as you fire on the target.

I have to say that the experience (at least with the T-Flight) is pretty great. Once I mapped all the necessities onto the buttons, it's been smooth. All I need is the mouse for headlook. If I had an Oculus Rift, I'd be very immersed in the setting.

Fake edit: How does one pronounce HOTAS?

This is the setup I found which works great. Lets you do everything with the HOTAS and has combinations to spare.

I rebound jettison all to debug cam and added in "target next hyperspace system"
Should probably add in the wings functions at some point, but it'll be at least a week by the time I make it back to civilization, so no rush.

It succeeded. ;_;

I went to a random RES that I've been hitting up the past couple of days. This time there was a wing of 3 dudes, I think a Vulture and two Cobras. I didn't pay them too much mind. After I killed a Clipper and an Anaconda in my Viper I lined up a Cobra with a bounty that was moving nice and slow, so I nestled in behind him and started taking him down when all of a sudden I get missile warnings, my shield is gone, my hull is half gone, and I'm just trying to boost away. I notice the wing of guys had gone red on my HUD so I guess they went to pearl harbor me. I managed to jump away with 27% hull despite malfunctioned thrusters. I guess they were mad that I was taking out ships? Considering there was three of them they really didn't seem to put much work into either of the ships I killed.

Anyway, I'm fairly new, picked the game up a couple of days after it came out on steam. There does seem to be a lack of PVP, maybe I'm too low level right now, or maybe I'm mostly in the wrong places, but aside from this incident the only other PVP situation I got myself into was when I scanned a Sidewinder, saw the wanted level, and started firing my laser at him before realizing that it was an actual player and stopped and just let him jump away.

So wings gets full bounties for taking out ships, that seems stupid, they should divvy it up. But since they don't maybe those punks should have just invited me to the wing? I wouldn't have minded a fair-ish 1v1 situation to fight over the RES, but the 3v1 plus sneak attack bugged me.

I'd like to get some experience taking on other players... but it seems almost impossible to get a fair fight going. Someone always has a better ship, or wingmen, or whatever. Dogfighting against AI gets a bit repetitive. Maybe I just need to get into piracy, it seems like a fair career path to try to take out freighters in my Viper.

Fake edit: How does one pronounce HOTAS?
I rhyme it with ass personally.

So since this thread appears to have some X52 users, btw I don't have a throttle zeroing problem but sometimes my stick gets really weird where there's a big gap when I push forward. That is, I get a little forward movement when I start pushing, then a bit further I get zero movement, and finally towards the end I get near max movement. Pretty annoying, but unplugging the joystick to throttle cable seems to do the trick.

Anyway, what kind of mappings do people go with? Most specifically how do you deal with thrusters? After a lot of tweaking I have the throttle Hat as up/down/left/right and the D button as reverse thruster, and just use throttle for forward thrust, then the I button for boost. I don't feel like the hat switches are all that accurate though. Maybe I just need more time with it.

That's awesome. I saw the 50 ly thing in the mission description but I assumed it was flavor text. Cool.

Found a ringed water world - first one of those I've ever seen. Couple of ammonia worlds too, which I gather are also fairly rare.

6,000 LY from SOL right now yet still only 1/3 of the way to the core.

I'm up to 80,000 credits now. Going to farm another 40k or so and then trade up to an Adder. Should be okay at that point. It really isn't so bad when the bulletin board system actually gives me missions I can do. Live and die by the RNG I guess.

Holy hell, that makes me want to make one of my own! I've built a few MAME cabinets, building something like that would be fun! I have to say I've thought more than once about building a sim cockpit for my flight sims, something like this:

The last time I costed it out I decided not to. If I was single I'd do it in a fucking second! But being an adult in a relationship has it's pros and cons...:(

God would it be fun to fly Elite in a sim pit though....

Traded in my Viper for a fully loaded Type 6 and did a couple mil worth of trading. Not gonna lie, kind of boring, docking computer made it tolerable. Traded in the Type 6 on a bit of a budget Vulture (I had about 9.5 mil to spend with insurance reserve... and man, what a difference from the Viper, I like it so much more. Hardpoints let you trail targets above your nose rather than the bullshit Viper hardpoints that only had the bottom firing arc. The simple 2xClass3 is nice because it opens up the second fire button for my k-warrant. On the viper I had it grouped with my lasers so I'd sometimes keep holding it down wasting beam power just so I wouldn't lose my scan progress. Would be nice if there were a dedicated button for that.

Anyway that thing just ripped through stuff, Anacondas, Pythons, etc... just... no longer all that threatening. It turns like a dream as well, and it seems like the E thrusters handle a lot of tonnage, so that's nice. Very easily collected 1.25mil in-system bounty on one RES run. Not sure how long I spent there, but didn't seem that long. Might be the first ship I've actually fallen in love with in this game.

While I was doing my trading I kept picking up assassination missions in one of the systems on my route. So now I have about 15 all clustered in the same few systems. I'll be real curious to see how this goes, lol. I got really sick of trying to do 1-2 assassinations and just flying around aimlessly taking forever to get to the actual ships. I'm thinking this will be much faster, maybe not, maybe it's a bad idea. But that will have to wait till after I get some food in my belly.

Yeah, I picked up a Vulture today, too. Only did a quick run through a RES, it's not quite fully kitted out yet, but it's already doing as well or better than my fully-kitted Asp does. Need some more dough for some upgrades and I need to hunt down some Class 3 gimballed burst lasers somewhere.

Did you do the same thing I did when I first went into Outfitting and the Class-1 pulse lasers popped out? On those huge-ass hardpoints? "Aww.. wookit da cute widdle wazers!! pew pew!!" The Class-3 lasers actually make a "thud" sound when they deploy.

AFAIK, class 3 burst gimballed doesn't exist. Not even at founders world.

I'd stick with the pulse. Less power draw, better dmg vs components. 1 x beam 1 x pulse is a solid option too.

I don't bother focusing on components, I don't like stopping to fiddle with menus in the middle of a firefight. The only ships really worth it are the big ones, and those are the ones you definitely don't want to take eyes off of when they're gunning for you.

The power draw on the pulse lasers is actually too low, IMO.. I can fire them pretty much indefinitely with only two pips in weapons. That tells me I can get more bang for my buck by putting something else in that slot. Won't know until I try, yeah?

I mean overall ship power. Running pulses will let you run things like more shield boosters and shield cell banks.

Targeting subsystems takes about 2 secs if you have keys/buttons bound to target next/prev subsystem, and reduces kill time by a LOT. I've had anacondas go pop with 80% hull still remaining as I've destroyed their power plant.

Yeah I've mapped next/prev subsystem to keyboard and it really helps. I did have it on one of my hat switches but really pretty much none of the buttons nor switches are any good for anything that you are going to want to hit somewhat rapidly. Targetting power plants on Anacondas is a must. Seems like it doesn't accomplish nearly as much against anything smaller though, certainly not if you're at an RES and other people are pounding the hull.

Really the pulse beams drain power plenty fast enough, for a big target at 4 pips I'm still going to run low on juice. Maybe if I did more hit and run tactics I could see wanting better DPS.

Anyway, this is what I have now: EDShipyard
Code:
[Vulture]
L: 3E/G Pulse Laser
L: 3E/G Pulse Laser
U: 0C Kill Warrant Scanner
U: 0I Chaff Launcher
U: 0A Shield Booster
U: 0A Shield Booster

BH: 1I Lightweight Alloy
RB: 4A Power Plant
TM: 5E Thrusters
FH: 4A Frame Shift Drive
EC: 3B Life Support
PC: 5A Power Distributor
SS: 4B Sensors
FS: 3C Fuel Tank (Capacity: 8)

5: 5B Shield Generator
4: 4C Shield Cell Bank
2: 2D Hull Reinforcement Package
1: 1D Frame Shift Drive Interdictor
1: 1D Hull Reinforcement Package

Now that I've built up a few million in the bank I think it's time for me to start thinking of what to upgrade, but this has been working pretty well for me.
