Anyone have any good recent guides for starting out in this game. I was in the premium beta before, but haven't played for a few months until only recently because of just being real busy. I have more time now so hoping to get back into it.

Gotta take out my DK2 Rift and take the X55 hotas out of the box. I was able to set-up voice attack as well which adds to the experience as well.

Was just able to recently get my free Eagle from another system.

It has a massive fuel tank and a very large jump range. For the price, no other ship comes close to it for exploration. I think only a very specifically outfitted Anaconda can beat it.

The Type 6 actually comes close, and at quite a bit cheaper. It can get within spitting distance of 30ly jump range, and has a cockpit with good visibility. It can't jump quite as far, nor do as many jumps between refueling, but not bad for a ship that costs a fraction as much.

Dev update is out.

Powerplay beta is next week (20th)
Mac version ED is out
Optimisations (such as new shader caching) will be out with 1.3 and should help both low end and high end machines, though they'll mostly help low end
Turret changes coming in Powerplay/1.3
Turrets now interact with fire groups--if not in the deployed fire group, they will not target nor attack
Target Only mode: turrets in active fire group track the target but don't automatically fire; "when the player attempts to fire the weapon while it is tracking, the gun will start firing and will ‘latch’ on until you lose sensor contact with that target, switch fire groups or otherwise disable the weapon. Moving out of range or fire arc does not break the latch."
Changes mean that Target Only turrets can be used to initiate an attack
Fire At Will turrets "are no longer able to accidentally commit assault crimes. They will check if their target is legal before firing (or that it’s someone you’ve already assaulted) and do not fire at a target that would be a new crime, any ships hit accidentally by stray shots will not punish you for the hit."
Other improvements allow turrets to be more accurate at range but possible to outmanoeuvre in a close fight
More variation between turrets is coming: smaller turrets can maneuver more quickly and are better for tracking smaller, faster ships
Reviewing feedback on new crime system, they are CONSIDERING the following changes (not yet confirmed for 1.3):
- If the collision is shield damage only then no crime is committed.
- If hull damaged is caused then it is a fine.
- If a ship is destroyed then it is a bounty offence.
Pilot model now appears in the cockpit!
Working on more localizations/translations

Great dev update, looking forward to all those changes.

I'm hoping "seeing pilots in other ships" also applies to us when using the debug camera.

Only took them 5 month... to considere it.

Got a Type7 to fly along friend's python and winged up to trade. When you both land and sell at the same port at the same time, you each get a wing bonus of about 5% which for us was about 17-20 grand for out cargo space of 218.

Had a mission to destroy some ships in a conflict zone at a nearby system but all I could find was a high intensity one so I thought "fuck it! lets do this!". Went in, chose my side and then it happened... a huge capital ship ( think it was the Farragut ) warps in along with a really cool sound effect and I basically went...

https://flic.kr/p/rZdWQ8

This was the first time I had seen a capital ship, I didn't even know they were in the game and luckily this one was on my side so once I had picked up my jaw off the floor I began chasing the enemy targets, swooping and sweeping along the side and over the capital ship and inside I was like a little kid!

I've only seen a video of one warping into a combat zone, although I have been up close to one (there's one parked in orbit above Earth). The one video I watched, the warp-in effect sounded like a thunderclap. Can't wait to see one in combat in-game sometime.

I've been contributing to the "Protecting against the elements" goal, but at 3000 tons, I'm still in the top 40% only. How much do I have to give to be in the top 15%?! Or even 5%?!

Anybody else getting a shitton of crashes today? I can't seem to make more than three or four jumps without getting a "transaction error" and it kicks me out.

EDIT: I checked the official forums, several other people reporting problems, something server-side. I'm just trying to get back home before TW3 comes out, since I won't be playing this for a while.. hehe.

So I built my own track ir 5 with an EyeToy and a Trackclip Pro. It's pretty cool, but I'm very glad I didn't drop $150 for Track IR5. We're too close to real VR headsets for it to have made sense to spend more than the $45 I spent on this setup. It works perfectly too. I'd probably enjoy it more if i had a bigger screen or a triple screen setup.

Investing in that Imperial rank was so worth it. What a beautiful ship.

fuck yea.

So.

I picked up a Python tonight. Nice damage output but holeeeeshit it's slow as molasses. Getting kited left and right. Need a thruster upgrade A-fucking-SAP.

They're both great combat ships. I liked the FDL a bit more.

A well equipped Vulture is much better than a barely upgraded FDL, though... so don't switch unless you can afford to significantly upgrade the FDL too.

I 'upgraded' to a discounted Python from my Clipper right after the Zaonce community goal. I probably am a little short on funds to properly outfit it, so I'm sure that's part of the problem but... it's just so ugly... and sluggish. I just haven't had the will to go back to the game. I guess I should load it up with some cargo racks, grind a few hours of trading out, along with a little Fed rank and go for the FDL.

I love my Python, but I miss my Dropship. The Python has better lateral/vertical acceleration, but the Dropship has superior turn rates.

The game feels so much better when you get used to FA off. Everyone should practice flying without flight assist. It might feel awkward at first, but it's awesome when you get used to it.

How precisely does one get combat bonds for a system with no combat zones? A community goal was asking for them in a system with no conflicts.

For my Vulture load out I decided to get a fixed beam laser for when I feel like aiming and a burst Gimballed for when I don't. With the grade A distributor and four pips to weapons the bursts actually charge up slowly while you hold the button down, as opposed to having to stop with dual burst to recharge, and the beam is good for slow things or wearing down shields or chaff.

Although it's really tempting to swap out that beam for the large hardpoint plasma accelerator. If I can find the power for it. And it will be named Crabhammer.

After upgrading my quite a bit from my last post on the subject...yea, it's pretty ugly inside. I think it looks better outside. IMO, the Clipper clearly has the best interior in the game, but the exterior reminded me too much of a 727 jet with nacelles attached to the wings and shit hardpoint locations.

To make it less sluggish: upgrade your thrusters. I put 6C's on mine. The 6D's are very similar as well. Maybe 10-15 average speed difference between the two.

On another subject, I found some really cool power management approaches along the way that I figured I'd pass along:

1.) If you're running multiple shield cell banks, turn all but one off. When you use all your charges in one, disable it and turn on the next. Doing so can save you 6% power multipled by however many you're using. I have 3, so I have 12% power available for any power-hungry upgrades I may want to do.

2.) New Python owners: Steadily make your way to the 9 mill power distributor (7A). If you're running (or want to run) 3x laser weapon setups, you'll need it. In the interim, I'd recommend running a setup similar to what you had on your clippers. 2x lasers and 2x multicannons. Upgrade to 7C --> 7B --> 7A as you can afford it.

3.) New Python owners: Upgrade those thrusters. The default thrusters suck hot asshole juice and are the singular reason you're getting kited by everything in combat zones/RES. Upgrade to 6D ASAP. Big difference for combat players. 6C is a bit better. Plan on springing for 6A eventually. You can probably stay at 6C/D and just jump straight to 6A.

Obviously you'll need the power to run all this stuff, and I find the 7C to be sufficient until you go to 7A. The 7B is just a waste unless you need to drop weight for some reason unless it's just glitched right now, as it only shows a .20 Mw upgrade at the station I'm at (I think the 7B is supposed to be a 27.5MW part but the station I'm at says otherwise). Manually manage your shield cells (point #1) and you can go more than 3Mw over your power limit (25Mw if you get the 7C) and you'll never even see a power warning indicator.

Biggest Python purchases will be for the big power plant (30Mw), armor upgrades, and 6A thrusters. For me, the Armor and Thruster upgrades are a lower priority to the max power distributor so I'm saving up for the 7B --> 7A distributors after getting the 6B shield. Then the thrusters, and armor last. That'll be a pretty long road, but I suppose by the time I'm putting military grade composite on it, I'll be tired of it and ready to move to an Anaconda. I expect that will be quite awhile from now.

edit: and i dare you to call my python ugly.

pretty as fuck. just look at that sommbitch

Has anyone else experienced their X52 pro causing the PC to soft-lock?

I spent three hours yesterday trying to fix it! :(

I haven't found the need for a class 7 power plant. I'm running an A6 and it's fine, but I'm running a D shield generator.

It's a light weight Python. I'm not sure if more weight will make it handle like shit.

noted, but that A6 powerplant is 16 mill. Is there a reason you didn't just move on to the 7B power plant for an additional 2.5MW? It's a bit heavier, but assuming you have at least a 6C thruster, it would be pretty negligible and open up quite a few upgrade options, no?

It has A6 thrusters. I'm trying to go for the best maneuverability. The A6 power plant and the D6 shield generator are much, much lighter. Money isn't an issue. I'm going to test the maneuverability with more mass soon.

please do report back.

pls compare with 7B powerplant and a heavier shield.

What do you mean by soft-lock?

I can still use the mouse, open and close window explorer but no programs will run. It stops connecting to the internet and if I try to reboot/shutdown with the X52 attached then it just hands on "Shutting down..." forever.

At first i thought it was a faulty usb socket but i've tried all of them

I can dimly remember experiencing something similar once, but I can't say if it was in any way related to the X52 Pro. Nor if I even had it back then...

If it's reproducable though, you'll probaby find someone somewhere with simular issues...

Decided to go on my first exploration trip. Found my first double star and it nearly got me. I "landed" right between them and things got a bit hot.

Fixed it, had to uninstall Intels USB 3.0 software.

Holy crap Strong Signal Sources. 5 Anacondas pop in where there was a bunch of gold left in the middle of space. It took a FDL, Python and two Vultures to take them down. Another was 4 Vultures and a couple of escorting pirates.

So I have a question: when doing community goals that involve warzones or RES sites...

...why in the fuck would I want to do them in Open Play? I sort of had the revelation last night as I'd never tried Solo Play before. Like...why add competition to my situation if I don't have to? Especially when tier rewards are provided based on individual contribution?

And now you know why switching to and from Solo is ridiculous.

Yeah, I figured out pretty quickly to switch to solo for community goals. Why fight over bounties in a crowded system? It also feels a lot safer to just power down at an RES and take a piss or run to the fridge if another player can't notice your strangely still ship and gank you. To me it seems like everything in the game discourages PVP which I think is a shame.

I didn't even know it was a thing.

PVP mode has never been a problem for me with RES sites or conflict zones (except for when I was a noob and was picking the wrong faction and getting murdered by other CMDRs) so I never even tried the "solo play" option. Seeing the occasional human is cool. And my damage output means that even if I am competing for kills at a RES site or something, I usually win the "last hit" war.

But this is my first time trying one of these sorts of community goals and...it seemed quite obvious to me after going to my first conflict zone (for one of the current Alliance goals) and seeing like 8 other CMDRs there and being like, "well fuck this. does solo play count too?" Tried it and left pleased.

TBH, unless they have a method of increasing the density of enemy ships based on the number of CMDRs in a given instance, it doesn't make sense to do it any other way. Multiple CMDRs fighting over the same 20 enemy ships that I could kill without competition in solo play...well the decision is obvious.

Yea, feels that way. Hopefully future patches and updates will rectify that. Though tbh, the high cost of ship replacements does all the discouraging all by itself. Unless they develop a separate PVP fighting mode where ship replacement costs are non-existant and there are special goals, there will be no real PVP community. The potential losses are too great. Not just in terms of rebuying a ship, but any bounties that you haven't cashed in. I'm flying around right now with about 10 million in uncashed bounties. I'd be infinitely more salty about the unclaimed cash than the ship.
