UPDATE 12/12/2024: Sony has now confirmed its interest in acquiring Kadokawa.

"It is true that we have made an initial statement of intent," said Sony in a report from Yahoo Japan (via IGN). "We would appreciate it if you would allow us to refrain from further comment."

This means both sides have now acknowledged the possible acquisition, though no further details are currently known.

ORIGINAL STORY 11/12/2024: Employees at FromSoftware owner Kadokawa are reportedly optimistic about a potential buyout from Sony due to frustration with current management.

Kadokawa suffered a ransomware cyberattack earlier this year, but employees were left disappointed by the response from current president and CEO Takeshi Natsuno.

As a result, employees are said to be "thrilled at the prospect of an acquisition by Sony", according to a new report from Japanese outlet Bunshun (via Automaton).

"The people around me are thrilled at the prospect of an acquisition by Sony," a veteran Kadokawa employee told Bunshun.

"That's because there's a certain number of employees who are dissatisfied with the Natsuno administration, which didn't even bother to hold a press conference after peoples' personal information was leaked in the cyberattack. They expect that if Sony were to acquire the company, they would get rid of the president first."

The cyberattack against Kadokawa included video streaming platform NicoNico, as well as personal employee information as part of 1.5 terabytes of stolen data.

Former chairman Tsuguhiko Kadokawa - part of the company's founding family - was reportedly "surprised, but appeared positive" about a Sony acquisition, according to a Bunshun source at the company.

Kadokawa himself resigned from the company in October 2022 following allegations of bribing an official of the Tokyo Olympic Games. Kadokawa denied the charges.

Conversely, economic analyst Takahiro Suzuki told Bunshun Kadokawa had little to gain from the acquisition. "Kadokawa will lose its independence, and management will become stricter," he said. "If they want to keep developing their business as freely as they have until now, [the acquisition] would be a bad choice. They'd have to be prepared for publications that don't lead to IP creation being put under scrutiny."

News of Sony possibly acquiring Kadokawa emerged from a Reuters report last month. The following day, Kadokawa acknowledged the takeover interest from Sony.

"The Company has received an initial letter of intent to acquire the Company's shares, but no decision has been made at this time," said Kadokawa at the time.

Still, the news has in part led to a sharp increase in Sony's stock value in Japan, which is currently the highest since 2000. As the Wall Street Journal reported, stock value has been on the rise for the past month following strong financial results from Sony and its profitable game segment.

As for what's next from FromSoftware, president Hidetaki Miyazaki stated a sequel to Elden Ring is not in development, but the company does have multiple projects in the works.

It's just confirm the interest though. Not much different from the other thread, what is supposed to be reported is the afterwards wheter Sony made an offer or not or if it's going through or not. In any case, hopefully this does not move foward. The last thing I want is modern west Sony touching them.

Wait till the employees at From Software visit the Sony office in California. From thrilled to shock to horror in a couple of hours.
Not to mention intoxication by fart fumes.

That happens I am buying PS5 pro.

Because I am fairly certain they will go PS exclusive and then port the game to PC just like every game 1st party game they have that is not GaaS .

This will even give the team to focus on one platform.

So . When that happens,,, PS5 pro here I come ( still not paying to play online they can fuck off . Just single player games )

This would be an insanely smart acquisition by sony if it goes through. I know people hype up fromsoftware and for good reason, but spike chunsoft and aquire are also great studios that you could do alot with.
Well plus all the other entertainment properties outside of gaming. They really are a perfect fit for Sony.

Haha, told yall in the other thread. This is marketing for a deal that has been done for a while. It's over. Welcome to Bloodborne folks, we're about to be playing it soon.

Sony just bought the best developer.

Sony just bought hipster cod. You don't know it now, but Hermen just secured his legacy as well. Sorry folks, you did just lose if you have been against Sony lately. Bigtime. What you are seeing is a slow motion trick fucking by Sony of the only non-Nintendo acquisition left that matters.

Ya they could expand there anime offerings and swallow all of the manga that kadokawa owns as well. Sony are slowly becoming an anime powerhouse and as anime grows larger and larger sony are making concrete efforts to build themselves up as giants in that segment.

Just knowing From/Miyazaki are not working on a sequel to ER is really sweet sweet music to my ears. Thank all the gods.

Already have a Pro but I rather keep on playing on PC so it’ll likely suck for me, I definitely see no upside to this until Sony goes day 1 on PC.

It'll be interesting who stands their ground longer.

Kadokawa wants a FULL sale, however apparently Sony only want the Gaming/Anime section only.

Fits with Sony honestly. I don't see a huge issue with it. Ownership stays in Japan so it'll likely not be fought that hard.
Theres no reason for it to be fought. They aren’t even top 2 or top 3 from the anime giants. And FromSoftware probably already had most sales on PlayStation (outside of Elden Ring).

Yep, we already got a public announcement that a letter of intent was sent. We knew Sony was interested on acquiring them. Let's see how negotiations and due diligence goes and let's hope they both agree the acquisition.

They are a great fit to each other: Sony gets a ton of IP and production teams for anime, plus movie and music on top of Fromsoft and a few extra gaming stuff. Kadokawa gets the huge support from a global company that will hellp to bring their stuff to a global audience.

Im just thinking of Froms games with a better engine and great perfomance . Just this for me justify anything...

Dark Souls 4, Bloodborne 2 and Sekiro 2 made with the Demons Souls engine .. a man can dream 😅

The purple and blue hair along with unicorns and pride flags everywhere should make them realize the shite they are getting into.

They must all own stock at the company because why else would they care. Or maybe they all have huge retention payouts going their way like bungie had.
