No, you are ignoring everything. You claim that they must speak French, since it's such a big language, spoken in so many countries. German is spoken in most of the same countries, and have about 50% more native speakers than French, but they get by fine with talking in English.

How hard is it to understand than eurovision is old and at a time very few countries participated, and french was spoken in a large chunk of the territories present?
