Fable

They must not have cashed their check yet....

I don't hate Fable like this board seems to, neither do I love it, but their awards discussion is hilarious. Apparently the major fight was between Fable and Jak 3. The whole section sounds as though they played different games than I did last year.

The thing was a mediocre action Rpg with bad Npcs and an extremely linear world!!!! Damn you Haverlson!

I really enjoyed that game. Yes it wasn't what they promised, and yes the loading times make for major annoyances...but still the game is good. Never had so much fun as casting Bezerk on myself and turning into a red version of the Hulk.

One thing that annoys me is that you don't visually seem to get much stronger when you raise your strength and toughness rating (nothing close to the video they show when you upgrade)

I really enjoyed Fable as well. It didn't come close to being the game they said it was going to be, but it was fun and interesting none the less. It does get me excited for Fable II with more interactivity and more of the orginal features added back in. Load times did suck, and the levels were way too small and constrained, but I still had fun none the less.

Now, should it be Game of the Year on anyone's list? No way in hell. It was fun but not earth shattering. Had it come out with all it's features intact, then perhaps it would have won a few of these awards.

I wasn't even aware of the features that were cut from the game (since I hadn't followed the game at all), and I was still disappointed.

What other games are like Fable? Zelda-like with upgradable elements, and hopefully, get called ChickenChaser for the first quarter of the game?

I like the game a LOT. There's a little too much bloom effect for my taste but I like everything about the game. I didn't hype it for myself, though. But still... GOTY? In a year that WoW and Ninja Gaiden came out? Hell no.

I have come to not expect much from anything Peter M. related.

I got a bad taste in my mouth with B&W. I know he didn't necessarily "develop" the game, but I am sick and tired of Peter promising the moon and always failing to deliver.

Sometimes I had to squint. I mean is my hair so greasy that it shines so much? And my forehead too? :lol

Sigh. Play is such a pretty magazine. Why does the content have to be so...what's the opposite of pretty again?

I see.

Fable wasn't bad, but it wasn't excellent.

I'd give it an 8.5/10.

But worst game ever? Have you even played a bad game before?

Not worse game ever, but very disappointing when you factor in all the hype and promises for the game. Still ain't that bad though

I'm loving Fable. I just bought it yesterday. I didn't read all of Molyneaux's diary, and I definitely consider this a must-play action/adventure game. The soundtrack is above and beyond most RPG's too.

I was sucked into the hype machine. Fable made my Xbox gag. Listen, any game that makes the designer print an apology email shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as game of the year. Unless that sentence is, "Fable is digital poop that will never win game of the year." Bleh.

This usually doesn't bother me in games, but it bothered me here. You are constantly moving from area to area rather quickly, and being confronted by a loading screen every couple of moments gets on your nerves quickly.

Combat system was a little rough and simple (I HATE how you can accidently target good NPC or friggin barrels in the middle of combat) and overly simple. You almost have to TRY to die, as block rolling = invincibility without any real timing required. Exploration is unnecessary as a little map tells you where every little bad guy is, and the location of every little quest. I didn't see any real level design at all, justa bunch of basic paths strung together. This combined with the extremely annoying vocal reminders that you are low in health or magic just put a bad taste in my mouth after going through this game. Not even CLOSE to what was envisioned.

Still it's a very playable game, but GOTY? :p Right

I just recently bought and beat this game... I was expecting more of an RPG with fairly deep Western-RPG style char development, but what I got was a hack-and-slash where they'd throw tons and tons of enemies at me. Beat the game without dying even once, maybe losing one resurrection potion, that's it. Some of the features were cool but didn't seem to have too much merit on the gameplay - so I marry a girl and have sex with her - aside from a counter incrementing in my status screen, what good does it do me? The load times and the art were my least favorite part of the game - the art looked like a fucked up cross between oldskool UK Amiga game art, and anime. Either stick with one or the other, or go with the standard generic Western RPG design. And where are the puzzles?? Oh well, it still entertained me enough for 11 hours and I applaud Molyneaux for trying something different. I'd give it like a C+ or so if we use the GA style rating system.

Tip for load times: Load the DVD onto your HDD, it halves load times.

The game is great, and im glad to see it selling over a million, so we can expect Fable 2 on Xbox 2.

Fuck all of you, Peter Molenuex deserves all the success he gets.

Keep it up Pete, keep kicking haters in the stomach

I still haven't played Fable. IN YOUR FACE MOLYNEWB

Ok I lied, I played a small bit. Got rather bored, must play in segments.

Wow, someone not liking the same games as you must really get to you. Lighten up.

well, maybe worst game ever wasn't exactly correct, but its the only game I ever regret buying since I've been playing videogames.

I thought Fable was fucking fantastic. I would agree that of all the Xbox games I played last year Fable was by far my favorite. In fact I haven't even touched my copy of Halo 2 after getting a 1/4 of the way through the stupid ass campaign. but I've returned to the beatiful world of Fable many a time.

LOL

Play may as well be Dave Halverson's blog.

I used to respect the hell outta him but Play's tunnel vision has taught me the folly of that.

I don't see how people can be so divided about Fable.

At the very least, it's not like any RPG or action/adventure game on the PS2/Gamecube. I mean, I can't think of any.

It's got an interesting art style, voice talent in spades, a brilliant soundtrack, and a premise which caused so many of you to stick through to the end.

I won't continue playing a game if it has bad controls, horrible graphics, glitches, or just boring gameplay. The game is averaged at about 12 hours. That's Prince of Persia's length. I find it highly unlikely that any of you sat down at Fable for that long or even 7 hours of one sitting, and if you did, you must really love the game.

Based on my experience with Fable so far, it seems like a shorthand action game with some interesting sandbox concepts thrown about. It's not deep, but it's entertaining as an action/adventure game. I'm not saying "OMG I'm bored to death make this stop."

A lot of the promised features were either scrapped or halfway implemented. If Fable had come out with zero hype, it'd receive much more credit. The more casual gamers I know who hadn't followed it from annoucement to release really liked it, especially those who like western RPGs.

What the hell was with the credits? It goes on for like 20 minutes, and the music (the two orchistrated pieces put back to back) completely loops like 3 times. And you HAVE to wait if you want to continue your game where you left off.

I thought the funniest part with the credits was
they showed the # of times they ordered takeout during the project - they must love their Indian food!
... yeah I remember watching the 20 minute long credits and getting REALLY frustrated :P I remember hearing one of our very own GAFfers made it in the credits somewhere...

That was me. Was actually me too (not just someone with my name), i checked. I was supposed to do some volunteer testing lionhead years ago but had to pull out, apparently they didnt pull my name.

I totally disagree that it was mediocre, it defintely has its problems, namely its length and the small zones but the actual game mechanics definitely made up for these problems imo, 3rd person RPGs with fun and varied real time combat are few and far between.

I'm playing the game at the moment, its quite fun. I dunno,I just ignore all media reviews and decide for myself if its a fun game. It does that for me,mission accomplished.
