Anyone wants to start an indie games joint?

edit oh ffs what is it with my random shit first posts today

I think I've mentioned my thoughts on veganism here before, but just in case:

I have a lot of respect for people who go vegan. It's something I've thought about doing and quite often feel guilty about not doing, especially because my reasoning for not basically boils down to convenience (it is more complicated than that, but it's still shitty)

If (and that's a big if) I ever have kids, I definitely want to try to raise them as vegans.

Look, I understand what it's like to not give a fuck, because I didn't always. I'm not trying to judge people, honestly, but when they taunt me over it once they learn I'm vegan I do get ruffled.

I guess we're on the same side again

yes, I definitely understand that. I was just trying to explain why this will probably happen a lot. you'll hopefully learn not to get too upset everytime. even though it's generally still annoying for sure ;p

No vegan diet, no vegan powers.

Why not let your kids choose?

I am okay with this, I understand that it's hard especially if you weren't raised that way, I get it. As long as people are like you and don't act like a dick about it I'm fine with them.

At the risk of sounding super ignorant, how do you feel this compares to moral indoctrination of children a la religion?

cuz babies can't fucking choose! you always force shit into them. whether it's meat or veggies, you raise 'em how you raise 'em. once they're old enough they may make different choices but until them it's the parents being in charge.

so feeding them the "standard" diet we have right now is no moral indoctrination?

what kind of reasoning is that?! going vegetarian doesn't make you more angry. if anything it can make you feel better about yourself if you aren't content with how the food industry works in the first place.

It will make me angry at the fact that other people still eat meat and me going vegetarian hasn't change anything within the system itself!

lol, I don't know.

This reminds me that my options are either Church's Chicken or Burger King. But with how my eyes are right now I might just end up eating cereal and going back to bed whenever its time to eat.

it's okay, I'm dating someone who isn't a vegan and I don't bother her over it. it's not a litmus test with me

if you gave up a chance of happiness just because the other person isn't religious I find that sort of tragic :(

I'm not trying to be flippant. I just know I don't care enough to stop myself from enjoying it. Same with a lot of consumer goods made in a capitalist system, honestly. :/

Religion dictates everything from way of life to philosophy to behavior.

My ex was an heir to a multimillion dollar trust fund, and promised me a life of ease for the rest of my life. She didn't believe in God and I did. Dropped her. That's how important it is to me... and now I'm about to become a Catholic priest

I've never mentioned this here before but I don't believe in sex before marriage, which makes me a villain or a no go in most people's eyes. Might as well go for the ultimate sacrifice then

with religion it's never that easy. if a person disagrees with such a major component of your beliefs its not worth it because there are going to be arguments. a lot of them

Do you still have her number?

Honestly, I would have done the same in the opposite situation. If it's important to you, it's important to you.

And I thought you were about to become a deacon not a priest? D:

that's what everything comes down to. doesn't matter if its religion or not. whatever your beliefs are, people who disagree with you won't get along with you

I get what you mean, but I feel like the indoctrination term is only used in the case of leading someone into a more restrictive way of thinking.

And I'm not saying it's wrong either. I think if parents want to teach their kids about their religion or their morals then they ought to be able to, so long as the goal is to better the children and better the world through those children.

Deacon is the ideal, becuase I might lowkey still meet someone.

Sex before marriage is the big hurdle. Absolutely nobody seems keen on this and it kills me inside. I've turned down several people for my ticket to the eternal life.

And yes, the last part is for real... I could have lived the easy life forever

You can inform your kid of both points of view and the pros and cons of each and let them pick.

NOOOOOO. THE EASY LIFE

I don't really get the issue. even if people don't believe in god they (in most cases) have a certain set of values that come with living in a society - most of which are compatible with the bible or whatever religious document you prefer. such as no murdering, stealing, lying etc.
so unless they're performing satanic rituals the issue here is just the plain act of not believing in a higher power?

You can inform your kid of both points of view and the pros and cons of each and let them pick.

once again: you're presenting babies the pros and cons and let them decide?
no? okay then tell me what you're feeding them until they're old enough to make that decision.

It gets into other commitments as well. So lets say Church every sunday or something. My SO (lol liek ever) might be like "I'm going to Church on Sunday, and I want you to come", and then you might be like "no, it's a waste of time." and then it's like "you think my beliefs are a waste of time" and then I sleep on the floor.

It's going to be a lot of more smaller things that are going to add up.

I look at it this way: A while ago my niece cried when she first learned what some of her food was (I've heard this type of reaction isn't entirely uncommon) She still isn't a vegetarian/vegan, and maybe will never be, but if she had the capability and efficacy to make informed decisions and determine her diet from the outset, maybe she would never have touched meat to begin with.

When I have children, I won't feed them meat. If when they're older and capable of comprehending what they're eating they decide they want to eat meat, then so be it.

this is the type of thing that baits me. You can eat meat but what's the point in taunting someone with the fact? It comes off as disdainful because I actually do care about the animals. Just you do you.

Total jest here m8

I could actually be vegetarian pretty easily

Sorry to offend. And props to anyone who sticks to any kind of conviction

even then, at what point are "kids" fit to make a decision like this? you'll have to make certain choices for them, food is one of them. and those choices will influence the child's decisions later, if you want it or not. that's why so many people just stick with meat, not necessarily because they agree with it or actively chose it at some point but because they were raised this way.

^

Most people in America who eat meat still have boundaries. For example, they wouldn't eat a dog. For the average American, eating a dog is unacceptable. It seems morally wrong to them.

If that same person was raised in, for example, Vietnam or something -- Perhaps they'd have been raised eating dogs and consider it perfectly normal.

Since we all have conflicting views on the morality of eating meat, or the morality of eating certain types of meat, isn't it best then to not indoctrinate our young children into eating any of it and let them decide later?

recognizing and understanding happen at different points in child development. I can't remember the exact time but i'm pretty sure they have to be at least well into middle school to make complicated decisions like that
