I look at it this way: A while ago my niece cried when she first learned what some of her food was (I've heard this type of reaction isn't entirely uncommon) She still isn't a vegetarian/vegan, and maybe will never be, but if she had the capability and efficacy to make informed decisions and determine her diet from the outset, maybe she would never have touched meat to begin with.
When I have children, I won't feed them meat. If when they're older and capable of comprehending what they're eating they decide they want to eat meat, then so be it.
That's a perfectly valid experience and I believe it's true for many people. On the other hand, I've known kids whose parents forced them to be vegan and they felt so ashamed to have to carry that flag in public, explain to their friends why they couldn't eat meat. And then they felt betrayed once they finally did get to try meat, like they had been deprived all of their short little lives so far.
It seems impossible to predict which direction a given person will lean, and I don't know how to reconcile that.
