It's really being considered as an alternative to ads for this who want that https goodness, it's really able to be accessed in its modest form with the Konami code, it's really able to be forced with various user scripts, and it's really funny to make jokes about it especially since so many people think the meme is incredibly stale.

I think it might have been a lot more enjoyable if they had let Ito make the game the way he wanted(initially, Basch was the protag but they were forced to shoehorn the anime-esque Vaan into the story to appeal the more insipid chunk of the fan base).

As far as I can tell dank (which usually means something along the lines of musty/rotted) is a good thing in the context of weed, which also smells like skunk ass, so the parlance transcended to memes. Ergo a dank meme is a rich and effective meme to be savored, but probably comes across as foul and immature to many.
