Funi turning their simulcast announcements into clues can be baffling, but their latest tweet appears to hint at Lesbian Bear Storm being their next pickup. Gonna wait until later today for confirmation. Not quite what I expected them to pick up, but they got Akuma no Riddle, and that also falls into the category of "yuri and guns".

Aw fuck, that means that blurays will take for fucking ever to come out and will have shit quality.

Funimation's been getting unusually aggressive with simulcasts the last couple seasons. That's not something I'm particularly happy about, for reasons including what Thoraxes outlined above.

I think that change to the story is really important because not only does it flesh out all the characters but it widens the idea of a 'feminist fairytale' (everything about this description seems wrong but people keep referring to the story like this) somewhat.
Not even Mr. Katabuchi himself escaped from labelling it like that (http://www.arete.jp/diary/c_note.cgi?page=200&mode=move), as he let Eiko Tanaka know before commencing to work on the film. Because of that at first he didn't consider himself apt to adapt such story.

Now I remember talking about this matter time ago along BluWacky too (http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?p=27515605#post27515605)!

This is a lie.

First stage is denial. Hidamari Sketch is slice of life rubbish, innit? If slice of life would be taken literally, it would take top honours by being dull as dishwater. Other slice of life rubbish balance this out by adding scenery porn, but Hidamari Sketch doesn't even have that. But wideface is kawaii desu ne. honto ni.

Nagi no Asukara - 1

So, this is pretty interesting. Though I can see the impending love triangle drama, it should be all right so long as they keep it in tune with the whole land people and sea people thing they have going on.

Hanasaku Iroha - 1-26 [Final]

After enjoying Nagi no Asukara quite a bit and finding out more about P.A. Works I decided to dive into this one, especially since I recall getting it recommended here before. I'm not in the mood for a long review so I'll keep it short.

The show is absolutely beautiful as far as visuals are concerned but the actual characters and story weren't interesting enough for me. On paper the premise of a high school girl being 'forced' to join and help out in an hot spring inn doesn't sound very promising really, and unfortunately I never grew especially attached to any of the characters, nor did really enjoy the show's plot and themes. It's just average or slightly above average and would get a 6/10 from me.

There's a few really stupid aspects in that show that annoyed me quite a bit. Like the writer with a failed career getting an offer to stay at the inn for the most ridiculous reasons (and then not even contributing to the show in any way other than some bad comedy/butt monkeying) or the madam managers son (young master) and his female companion who are so incredible incompetent at following even the easiest orders and fuck up nonstop.

PS:
Here's an absolutely wonderful clap webm!

edit: Hmm can someone make a looping, seamless gif out of that? Should be possible.

Mazinkaiser 4

The infamous beach episode where Sayaka loses her bikini top and becomes tsun-tsun towards Kouji at the drop of a hat. It was alright but it's nothing I haven't seen before.

I could see the blu-ray taking a long time to release as a complaint. Though their releases aren't shit. I actually prefer them to aniplex as their releases are crazy expensive, and even to Sentai at times.

I remember shedding tears and anxiously awaiting the film, so I guess I did grow much more attached (though those three characters you mention there were the least of which IIRC). Probably still is my favourite non Eccentric Family/Shirobako PA Works anime.

Finished Tsukimonogatari.

I don't think I really liked it until the towards the end, and I sure as hell didn't like the first part with ararararagi and tsukihi in the bathroom lol. Too much like Nise.

Their quality has been pretty questionable with many releases having poorer color, banding, an artifacts. Not to mention lower data rates and more episodes per disc. Sure it's cheaper, but the quality is usually much less than their competitors. Sentai has a decent balance going on as of recent, and AoA you get what you pay for in terms of the quality (which is usually outstanding).

Also Funimation has messed up releases of a few series now by using the TV masters versus bluray masters (they didn't check which version they had), resulting in massive delays for proper versions. I think Sankarea, only now, is finally going to get a proper bluray master release. Ben-to had this issue too, and after an 8-month delay will finally be coming out. Then on top of that they usually have a really slow release schedule as it is, with a few outliers coming in timely fashion after release.

While the video/audio issues for Sentai releases haven't been as prevalent as in years past, their rushed translation and lack of QC is more than enough for people to not support their releases until fixed. Additionally, they still have the issue of color balance being off (as with any company that uses a NA analog to digital converter) because the black levels are not comparable with one another. This brightens the NA releases and removes details from the picture compared to the JP version. What's worse is that it's not noticable unless you do a straight 1:1 comparison because it's an issue at the first stage of production (converting the master HD-CAM tapes into digital format). Only AoA (who uses JP authors for their discs) don't have an issue with it. Sevakis does the best for NA, but even he's flubbed on that for NISA/Viz/Discotek.

That's also an issue too. I usually will wait for complete collection releases on shows that I can wait for and find that they seem to improve on that with those releases (sometimes).

Edit to your edit: Ah yeah!

The end is where I kind of lost interest. I guess I expected more from the third act.

Sorry I will never go beyond denial because Hidamari is untouchable!

Large, smaller.

D-Frag! 08-12

The last arc was rather underwhelming and at times it went full Nisekoi on the harem antics but it still easily gets a spot in my Top 10 for the year. Crazy characters, funny jokes and the reaction faces were a thing of beauty.

Nagi No Asukara - 2

So sea-people who hook up with land-people get banished from the village. I wonder how that works for the sea-people who live on the land? Seeing as how sea-people have to be submerged in salt-water after a few hours on the surface in order to breathe properly. They probably have to live with taking lots of baths during the day.

In any case, things are definitely getting interesting. The dilemma being set up here is established pretty nicely in this episode.

It's nice to see someone enjoy D-Frag. It was one hell of a hilarious ride.

CR's first two announcements are Funi's Monday shows (Fox boys and bear girls). Aside from Saekano, nothing really worth noting yet.

Nagi no Asukara - 3

Yeesh, thank goodness Tsumugu actually showed some emotion. I was afraid he'd keep that nice but stoic personality throughout the entire show.

Anyway, there was some more decent character development in this episode. Though I doubt that Hikari's going to stop acting like a jerk any time soon, I assume he'll act that way less often now.

Crunchyroll begins its slate of Winter simulcasts by announcing the forthcoming launch of Yuri Kuma Arashi and Kamisama Hajimemashita Season 1 and 2 for Monday January 5th at 11:30am for international users in Mexico, Central/South America, and the Caribbean (excluding English-speaking U.S. territories), with Europe (except UK/Ireland/Scandinavia), the Middle East and North Africa for Yuri Kuma Arashi. Below, the synopses for the respective series

Boo!

Horse Detective

Why the long case?
Not really, it's understandable to dislike Brotherhood.

It's my SO's favorite anime and I am trudging through it but the humor and action escape me for the most part. I don't understand much of the reason for why anyone does what they do in the show.

Not at all, but have you passed the first season?

Yeah, 3.

I just end up cringing at the characters that are supposed to be intimidating.

I'm not really feeling Miuna's role in the second cour. She's not bad...but she's not great either.
I still don't like Tsumugu but it's entirely understandable that he's in love with Chisaki and she might like him back too. Kaname has the saddest situation, I feel for him.
The whole Manaka situation is interesting and I'm very eager to see her wake up and see how she'll be.
And this whole Chisaki loving Hikari thing...goddammit.

Almost finish Noir as watching the last episode right now. This show is very exhausting to watch but will finish it and then let it sink in and make my opinion about it. Will post a brief opinion of my 1st viewing of the show soon.

Haly

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
Hanamonogatari

Firehawk is right in that Kaiki's character alone probably justifies the existence of Nise.

Meat meat meat meat. A man after my own heart. And to think we're not getting Shokugeki no Soma by SHAFT.

Noir had an open ending but I liked that direction. Elfen Lied actually reminded me of it in a way.
Its a shame that Noir took a while to get rolling but once it did it was solid.

The irony is palpable.
