Fallout 4 - Reviews thread

What I enjoy is the clear hypocrisy in play here.

You have complete technical shitshows like Dragon's Dogma; a game with such awful tearing and framerate, I personally couldn't play it due to headaches. However, I constantly see people on GAF heaping praise on that game.

Fallout 4 has occasional frame hitches? WHAT A PIECE OF SHIT.

Fuck off.

Same people?

Those who do not agree are always the loudest, which is why negative opinions here tend to "steal the show". MGS4 is a classic example of this. Won the gaf-goty in two votings, yet positive comments on that game seem hard to come by.

Each copy of the game is the same. It's not like he obtained some magical copy of the game that has higher fps than the others. The fps drops are there, and it's apparent from any damn video you watch.

I can't stand this thread anymore.

Wait, people still don't want to accept that the Xbox One is weaker than the PS4? lol

It's when people try to justify their box of choice's weaknesses and blame the developers.

People were tossing that term in almost every major multiplat release in the PS3 generation.

Yeah, it's been a weird lead up to this game.

It's not really weird. It's actually pretty standard affair from what I've seen and I've only been here 2 years. This is actually pretty similar to the gtav run up, where people wanted blood for the sins of gtaiv. The order, Witcher, Destiny, Evolve, etc etc. Standard affair imo, just diffent sizes and causes for the groups. Some are genuine some have agendas etc etc.

Yeah I've actually found that I quite like Forbes' reviews. Erik, Jason, Paul and Todd are all great writers and critics (edit: and I know there are more than just these 4, but these 4 are the ones that caught my attention).

I hate the layout of the site though (ex: why isn't their fallout 4 review at the top of the page?), but I imagine they have little control or input there.

Maybe he took a path that did not have the significant dip?

Question that I have that I don't see covered in reviews: Does this game still do the "essential NPC" bullshit like in FO3, or is it like New Vegas where I can just shoot a guy in the head and they'll actually die?

How is he full of shit? He posted in this thread saying he is not denying the game may dip. Just never dipped for him.

well.....that's kind of like standing outside in the rain with someone and hearing them remark 'hmmm it might be raining but I haven't noticed it'. I mean.....does he have some sort of special ps4 or copy of the game? Don't get me wrong I love Jim and I'm willing to give him the benefit of the doubt but this is extremely odd to me. As far as the thread, I'm glad the game is getting good reviews. I was worried and highly skeptical but I may eventually have to dive in. I've loved every bethesda game ever made but I've also grown weary of the formula over the years. I"m not afraid of a poor framerate or bugs....or even some hard crashes. I've been down this road before with all their games and I still like them.

Glad it's reviewing well. I was not expecting such high scores considering all the technical issues. Work couldn't end soon enough today.

The level of dislike and hoping for it to be a bomb is pretty rough. If you aren't into the game, move on to other threads and talk about things you do like. There is more to life than hating on things.

Come on, most everyone likes to rubberneck a bit cuz schadenfreude.

And how everyone plays these games is very different as the game is designed to be very open and let you do what you want. How you played the game and what you did probably affects a lot what bugs and glitches and slowdowns you encounter... ever think of that? This isn't a linear game where everyone is mostly going to be acting the same way.

My favorite thing about a thread like this is how many of the people shitting all over the game have it pre-loaded on their PC/PS4/XB1 already. You bitch and moan and complain and at the end of the day will likely still buy the game because technical issues aside, it's going to be awesome and you know it.

Can't wait to fire up this badboy tonight. Happy to see the great reviews.

I've yet to see any detailed analysis on the effects of having a voiced player-character, the radical change in dialogue system, and subsequently dialogue-based skill checks. Furthermore, has any review directly compared it to the criticisms of Fallout 3? Specifically the poor world-building, writing, and quest design. Are quests just a series of isolated affairs again? Are they more closely connected to the surrounding world? Is the writing as poor as before? Are we to expect absurdity such as a settlement built around a bomb, vampires, or children-led settlements again? Has Bethesda made any changes to respect the established lore, are running with the problems of Fallout 3, or is it worse? Does the world maintain a level of consistency and logic, or is it a theme park of locations to see? How does the game address the lack of a reputation or karma system? How is the execution of the tiered-level-scaling?

These are but a few of the questions I'd like to know, and while I already have my suspicions, it shouldn't be unreasonable to expect professional critics to address them.

I agree with these questions, especially about the dialogue system, which from the previews I've seen looks restrictive and irritating. I especially don't like what I've been hearing about the decrease in skill checks during dialogue. New Vegas spoiled me, I don't want to go back.

Putting my money where my mouth is, I won't be playing Fallout 4.

Not worried about technical issues, though they will be present, more worried about poor design.

And Meta is back at 90!

The world building makes a little more sense in Fallout 4, but it still very much feels like a bunch of loosely connected locations with different "themes." This is not helped by what feels like a smaller world. The Commonwealth is not a wasteland. It's packed full of stuff.

If you want the lore to follow FO1-2, you will be sad. No spoilers, but there is a massive lore breaking feature that is included as part of the core experience. It follows the lore of FO3 a bit more in that regard.

No karma is excellent. It's about time the series that is ostensibly about survival ditched it.

The voice acting is very good throughout, but the compressed dialogue choices lead to situations and experiences that RPG fans feared. You will pick a response and expect your player to say one thing and get another. Many of the choices you'll be able to pick are just "tones" like "Sarcastic." That is your dialogue choice. It has a massive effect (heh) on the roleplaying aspect. Some people don't care about that. I do.

The characters are the paper dolls from Fallout 3 and not the slightly more nuanced characters from New Vegas. So far, every character that can be a companion asks to join you literally 5 minutes after meeting them (with one notable exception). It's very off putting. Luckily, there is a lone wanderer perk that let's you avoid the companions altogether, if that's your thing.

Overall, as one of the RPG Old Guard, this is a disappointing step back from New Vegas in every way. On the other hand, I can have fun with it for what it is, which is a silly, nuclear sandbox to go play it. It's going to piss off the hardcore RPG fans immensely.

Based off the reviews, sounds like I shouldn't expect anything up to par with New Vegas' narrative (which I expected considering this is Bethesda). That's fine - I don't mind playing dumb, vegging out, and probably smoking a blunt while exploring the wasteland.

However, I think I'll wait until the game gets a few patches.

Jim's fantastic, but he's full of shit. He didn't notice them, but they're there. Predicting 87-89 range.

Because he didn't notice something? That doesn't make him full of shit by any means. Honestly I'm well aware of issues with technicalities and engines, especially if they're worth complaining about. But I will say there was already one video I saw that people flipped out about where I saw nothing staggering.

Any of the reviews really go into story? I don't really give a fuck about frame rate drops or whatever, I just want a story and characters that aren't trash. I want to know if it really is a step up from Fallout 3 or not. I'm really on the fence about this game because of my experience with previous Bethesda games.

I clicked a few reviews and it seems the consensus from those was that the main story still sucks. Is that mostly still true?

A lot of the reviews have highlighted the story and characters you meet as a big step up, emotional and quality.

The companions also are getting a lot of praise which is aces :D

Does it have immortal NPCs like FO3 or can you kill anyone at any time like in NV?
