[Famitsu] Hulst: focus on service games despite Concord failure; UC2 has greatest impact in 30 years; aim to leverage legacy IPs, and more

That's why I believe people are going to care more about the gameplay in Intergalactic than the main character's design.
I assume it will depend. If the gameplay focuses on the story and focuses on things like showing she is LGTB and jew, that the bad guys are white males etc. many people will get pissed off as happened in TLOU2.

If they keep away the propaganda (something I highly doubt) and focus instead on great action, exploration, spectacular set pieces and narrative with great characters (who are there because of serving a needed part of the story, not just for being fillers just to check some 'representation/diversity' DEI checklist) yes, people will care more about the gameplay.

It's funny how he's trying to spin Helldivers 2 as a big win for Sony and a justification to keep trying even though it's not even a game made by a first party studio and Sony merely published it.
Helldivers is a Sony IP, and most of the people who worked on it are from Sony or from outsourcing studios paid and managed by Sony (SIE/PS Studios/XDEV in particular). In AAA games, the lead dev studio (in this case Arrowhead) only provides around 10% of the people who works in the game.

And beyond funding it, publishing it, producing it, marketing it, or codeveloping it, the game was supposed to be made in around 3 years and Hermen allowed them to have a 5 years long delay.

It's a Sony game and would be super different if someone else would have published and codeveloped it.

And it's pretty retarded to say that calling Helldivers 2 a big win is spinning anything: it's a fact, Helldivers 2 is the fastest selling Sony game ever and one of the most successful games on Steam of the year.

Because it looked awesome?

Then that proves my point. People care more about a game that looks cool than finding a relatable character.
Well yeah I’ve never tried to make a point that coolness ain’t selling games. Quite the opposite.

Problem with Intergalactic is that the character they focus so much on looks so bland. And they go with that look in 2024? Idk I just think it’s plain bad PR work really.

As said earlier, imagine if they had scrapped that long intro and just focused on the part with the record starting to play and then the space ship blasting away, and then they show the planet surface, powered on light saber knockoff, and then someone you haven’t seen yet rush out to wack the droid.
Then I guarantee that most people would be excited. Could’ve just given the lady a helmet with a black visor and it would be a win.

What pissed people off was Joel's death and he wasn't portrayed as the enemy in the game. Abby's journey is about overcoming guilt after what she has done to Joel.

I also don't believe the majority of gamers wouldn't even connect these so called Israeli Politics in games like The Last of Us.

This story seems to be based on fake religion, a similar story to Final Fantasy 10.

PS5's start has been far better than both PS4 and PS3's for me.

PS3 sure no doubt, PS4? Maybe if you compare the first year or two, then it was top game after top game on PS4, PS5 only saving grace has been multiplats and those fake exclusive Sony moneyhats to get something going so no one can say it's been barren, aside from Demon's Souls perfect remake, GOWR good but not GOW18 level of great and Helldivers 2, games are laking

Horizon still a borefest with its only hook being the robodinos, Retutnal doesn't feel like people cared about that game, Ratchet went full furrytard and what else? oh yeah REREREREREREREMAKES yay! :messenger_sleeping:

Yes, people got mostly pissed off because of Joel's death and because of tried to 'force them' to like who murdered him, while many people hated her mostly because of having killed him.

The second reason of being pissed off was that they bought the game thinking that it was going to repeat the magic chemistry between Joel and Ellie like in the first one, but found out that they were trying to replace them with other more tokenized and uncharismatic couple, being one of them that character they were hating. So people got also pissed off that in addition to lose Joel they pretty likely they could lose Ellie if not for this game for the next one. And well, because the story instead of focusing on Ellie and Joel a huge chunk of it went to make many filler scenes about trans kids issues, being a lesbian, showing that this character is jew, showing scenes to show a character of this or that 'underrepresented' group, etc. Which wouldn't piss of them if the game would have given them what they wanted: to focus the game on Joel+Ellie scenes and the chemistry/relationship between them (or something related with the same level of quality they had in TLOU1).

Regarding my 'white male' being the bad (or dumb/weak/traitor role) guy wasn't about TLOU2 in particular, it's a common woke trope.

Regarding the jew (or even less Israeli) thing, I assume nobody cared about it. Even people from non-Israel MENA countries where the game isn't censored because of LGBT stuff.

I think the main issue is: people love Nate or Joel and buy a game expencting what they know they like. And get pissed off because they get a replacement they don't like and the story starts to focus and characters that don't connect with them. And start getting pissed off when they see most of the characters they love get retired/replaced by other ones they don't like. And the more it gets repeated the more they get pissed off, particularly when seeing that this is reaching a point of Sony running out of white male protagonists.

So people like me, when seeing a teaser of another Sony game featuring another ugly, androginous, angry lesbian as protagonist of Ghost of Yotei or Intergalactic many fans instantly disconnect because assume that the games will focus on filling DEI checklists trying to appeal some other demographics that may not be interested on this type of game or may not be big enough, instead of focusing on trying to appeal the type player who previously bought the ND and Sucker Punch games and apparently trying to reject them instead. Somewhat feel betrayed and forgotten, and feel that the studios are also betraying their charismatic iconic protagonists these users love.

I was almost four years in development before he took over. Do you have hard prove that hulst delayed the game for five years?

My brother, they own the IP and published the game.

They likely collect a big chunk of the money made.

Almost all of the games you mentioned as PS4 greats were released in the start. Gow2018 for example was released in the 5th year of the console lifecycle. Horizon in the year before that and so on.

I distinctly remember buying the PS4 launch month and not really finding much to play on it (especially given that backcompat wasn't a thing). The 1st PS4 exclusive I even remotely cared about came out in the 2nd year of its life, meanwhile I had Miles Morales, Astro's Playroom, Demon Souls and Sackboy available to me from moment 1.

When it comes to launch titles, only the PS1/2 gens beat PS5.

I didn't say Hulst delayed it for 5 years.

I said the game was supposed to have 3 years of development (this is, from 2016 to 2019) and Hermen allowed them to continue working on it for 5 years more. Hermen took over in 2019, the year they originally were supposed to orginally release the game.

And yes, I have hard prove of the game's creative director and back then Arrowhead CEO saying that it started in 2016, that was supposed to last for 3 years and that -obviously, because we saw it- Sony kindly allowed them to ship it 5 years later to ship instead something way bigger than initially was supposed to be.

He didn't specifically mention Hermen, but it is implied since he has been the boss of PS Studios / Sony first and second party games during these five years.

Here you have the conference:

They initially thought three-ish years (2016-2019) and it ended being four days away from taking 8 years.

Only a few scenes were about Dina being a Jew.

People knew there was going to be a romance story involving Dina and Ellie. We even thought the story was about Ellie getting revenge on Dina's killer.

Every story has a subplot within the main story and what you're saying is no different from what we see in most games.

I'll use more examples:

We know the main plot of Final Fantasy X, but there's also a romance story with Yuna and Titus. There's a story about religion that involves the main characters. There were more prayers in the game than in TLOU Part II. There's also Wakka's hatred for the Al Bhed. We can easily relate this story to modern times as people overcome their "bigotry". Remember, the Al Bhed are blamed because of their use of Machina

Left behind was a "love story" between Ellie and Riley. One chapter was about Bill and Frank. Another was about Henry and Sam.

No one should be surprised that these stories are being told in video games when the first game featured two gay relationships.

Hermen Hulst officially **took over as the head of PlayStation Studios (formerly SIE Worldwide Studios)** on **November 7, 2019**, following his promotion announcement. This marked the beginning of his leadership role overseeing PlayStation's first-party game development teams.

So it was supposed to come out in 2019 and he took over at the very end of 2019 and we assume it was his decision because?

Go look up the unveil trailer of TLOU 1 and Uncharted 1.
Both characters looked like normal men, you said it yourself, and easily relatable for the average 35+ yo mostly male audience.

Does this Jordan character look normal? Relatable?

If there is some context that explain her looks, or customizing options, then sure, it can work, and they should’ve showed that.
But as it is they’ll have a hard time making the average gamer excited for that main character.

If you’re a fan you should stop defending ND. If they would actually listen to what people are saying and tweak her looks and make it easier to sell the game it would benefit everyone, including ND, Sony, and fans. The defense is only increasing the negativity, look at any other game where this happens. There is nothing good coming from it.
Im not even defending them, im trying to understand your logic.

No, none of those men were relatable to me, I do not relate to in-game characters...like ever. Are there relatable moments? love, being a father, relationships? yea, but that has nothing to do with how a character looks, its based on how they're written.

When TLOU was announced i couldnt give two shits about Joel and how his character looked. I cared AFTER i played the game, just like ill judge this new one after i finish the game or see more from reviewers/people who play through it.

So if it's not important how the character looks why do they build in their politic views to show us.

what political views did you get from that trailer? It feels like you're trying to see something not there.

Unless you mean Ellie being gay? is being gay political?

Why does Sony think some guy who used to work at an FPS company is the man to lead Playstation as a brand? Not really seeing the skills or experience overlap between the two positions.

Because being the boss of PS Studios since the year it was originally planned to be released until almost 5 year later when it was actually released, he could have cancelled or shut down the game for not meeting the milestone/budget/quality as publishers normally do. Or as he did with games like Concord or the London Studio one to name a couple of examples.

But instead of this, he believed in this game and the team, gave them more time and money and allowed them to work on it almost 5 years more.

I didn't say it was his decision to delay it 5 years. I said he allowed it (plus gave them the time, money and resources to do so), when he could have axed it, because he has been the PS Studios boss during this period.

Why does Sony think some guy who used to work at an FPS company is the man to lead Playstation as a brand? Not really seeing the skills or experience overlap between the two positions.
Because he was the most successful PS Studios head they ever had, and before that leaded the gamedev studio that made the best selling PS Studios game ever. And their dev team was also known for being very productive, profitable and have top tier standards in tech/visuals.

But well, he is in charge of the first party games and the adaptations of these IPs to other mediums like movies or tv shows. The one who is in charge of the other things (PS hardware, accesories, services, marketing, 3rd party relations) is the other co-CEO, Nishino.

Guerrilla Games was the best managed SIE studio last gen (I'd argue they still are, looking at everything they do); they made Killzone Shadow Fall, Horizon Zero Dawn and The Frozen Wilds DLC, co-developed Killzone: Mercenary and RIGS: Mechanized Combat League, and supported the development of Death Stranding.
But also, he isn't the sole CEO of PlayStation, I once again ask people to remember that Hideaki Nishino exists.

That’s because he looked normal.
I think you would’ve cared about his looks if he looked like a gay bald space marine in skirt or whatever else not exactly normal.
At this point the talk isn’t about if Intergalactic is good or not, it’s about how they attempt to sell the game and main character to their target audience, whatever that may be.

Guerilla Games went from making unpopular Game Boy Color games in 2000 to making one of PlayStations biggest IPs in less than 20 years. You’d have a hard time coming up with a list of bigger success stories than Guerilla in modern times. Hulst was pivotal in that trajectory.

Dont worry guys, they are only focusing live service games right now because they want the extra cash flow but are too scared to go third party like Microsoft... once they suffer a few more Concord flops you wont have to worry about live service focus anymore. But they will def push harder on PC and maybe Switch/Xbox finally. It's just a matter of time. :p

Helldivers 2 is a big win but both the developers and Sony have been making weird blunders, like the Sony account thing, and kicking out 177 countries that are not supported on PSN. The devs on the side made horrible balance patches and was unplayable between March and August when the buff patches came out.

Killing the masculine role model/making him retarded is just one component of a woke game. Ugly lesbians being the protagonists, communism working, white people being evil, etc... complete the picture.

Just one thing on the list doesn´t make a game woke. It´s the accumulation that makes it propaganda, and when people notice it they reject it

In my opinion, they have Killzone 2 where they had all of SCE helping them and HZD, which is a woke game but has such an interesting story, world and gameplay that it´s enjoyable anyway.

He has plenty of fails on his track record

I hope him pointing out Uncharted 2 was a subtle signifier of what's to come, because that game is an example of a correct experience: A fleshed out Single player campaign + a multiplayer game. It's even better when any game has those two plus co-op, making a game have the perfect trifecta.

When you keep separating them you alienate one audience who might be interested in the other portion and you eliminate any crossover between the audiences.

Another thing that could help, at least in this day and age of people being so attached to brand names and clout, is to bring back beloved brands like Killzone and Socom, to kickstart this gaas endeavor you're so desperately trying to capture, and apply the perfect trifecta to them.

Anything less, and you might as well just take a plane to Vegas and use that studio money there. It's the same usage in my eyes.

tl;dr More multiplayer games (especially new I.P.) could use the trifecta: Campaign, Multiplayer, and Co-op. The original AAA.

The most important aspect to a persons track record is output and you can’t deny Guerillas output under Hulsts leadership.

What does this even mean?

Mention a significant one besides Concord.
They killed the Killzone iP and are on their way to do the same with Horizon. They don't seem to understand what made Killzone 2 great.

I don't think Lego Horizon can be called a success. Ghost of Yotei and Intergalactic trailers have been received with some negativy, and those are going to be expensive games that need to sell a lot. Those are not the games where you should make risky divisive creative decisions like making the main character ugly woke lesbians and all that jazz
He is fucking up, introducing wokeness in all Sony games, and next year doesn't look too promising in that regard

That's not an answer to my question, and there's literally nothing suggesting what you're saying.
I don't think Lego Horizon can be called a success.
I *knew* you were going to mention Lego Horizon as if smaller games flopping is anything new for Sony. Ever heard of Puppeteer?
I'm starting to wonder if you guys are actual Sony fans and not some culture warriors pretending to care about PlayStation.

'Ugly woke lesbians' is not exactly descriptive of either game and Ghost of Yotei's reception was positive for the most part. Intergalactic may be another matter, but no wonder when you realize that it's basically a target of the anti-woke mob right now.
I expect the conversation to shift once we see actual gameplay for it.
He is fucking up, introducing wokeness in all Sony games

They already have 4 retail games for next year (not counting MLB), and I'm pretty sure that they're gonna announce even more for release in 2025 as was the case this year.

Are people still on the Playstation train happy with his moves? I suppose they have to be in they're still onboard. Digital GaaS just feels like a far cry from what gave Sony their resurgence with the PS4. If the argument is only on the grounds of financial gain, I think you can make the case that Hulst seems serviceable. I just don't see what gamers see in him. Their respective visions for where they'd like Playstation to be in ten years are probably wildly different. Imagine if HELLDIVERS 2 didn't land the way it did this year. I don't think Sony expected it to be the hit it was. There's a good chance they were expecting Concord to do those numbers.

I just don't think he is cutting his own path. With the PS4 launch, Sony went against the industry grain and were rewarded for it. If they want me back on the train, they were going in the right direction with PS4. I had every intention of buying a PS5, but by the time scalpers had their fill, it became obvious that the release schedule wasn't quite what I was expecting. I wish they had the resolve that Nintendo does when it comes to sticking to their vision. "GaaS is great for our competitors, but Sony is going to do what Sony does best. We're making PSN free again and we'd like you to watch this trailer". *mic drop* Uncharted 5 trailer plays. Amy Hennig parachutes in from the rafters and Insomniac is seen in the background freeing themselves from their Marvel shackles. Druckman is arrested and deported to Canada. Immediately hired by Ubisoft.

What are you even sperging about, your post took a completely different direction at the end.
Anyway, I don't think I'm necessarily mad or happy for SIE investing in GAAS (which already started before Hulst became head of WWS, so it's not exactly ""his"" vision), they can do if they please.
It could result in great games as seen with Helldivers 2, and it's not like SIE stopped publishing SP stuff since then; look at Rise of the Ronin, Stellar Blade, Astro Bot, DS2, Lost Soul Aside, Ghost of Yotei, and even Until Dawn and Lego Horizon on the smaller side.
My opinion? Gamers need to stop fearmongering for fuck's sake.

You started the attack because people weren't being positive about Sony. Don't cry now.

Have you seen my post about Jim wackass Ryan?! I've criticized Sony myself also. So I have no issue of someone else does it in general. But I'm almost always going to be on the other side of the "anti-woke" because most are as bad as REEEEE now and it clogs many threads where some of us just want to take about games. But others want to talk politics.

Guy got triggered because I didn’t mention Astro Bot in a list of non woke games yesterday. 💀

Another goofy GAF poster here. Curious how having conversations have turned into people acting as if people are "triggered". I was helping your silly post by adding a Japanese game to your list smh.

This young generation is full of sensitive people that don't know how to have conversations anymore. I feel terrible for ya'll bro.

Sometimes it's true when people say the 90s were a better time.
