Far Cry 2 |OT| of Money, Diamonds, and Military Checkpoints

So ah, do you need to hunt animals for food? That video of the animal turning into the car and dying was actually interesting because it looked like the guy had a knife out and was trying to kill/hunt the animal.

I don't quite share your love for Oblivion/Fallout 3, but there are definitely a huge number of solid games coming out. It's understandable someone would want to know what to get. My wallet is starting to get pretty thin. I've already bought Dead Space (seriously, play this game), pre-ordered and paid in full for Far Cry 2, LBP and Left4Dead. May end up snagging Fable 2 tomorrow, since it looks great. And then there's Gears 2 coming up. Sigh.

Yeah my wallet is going to be taking a big hit this fall/winter. Just bought Saints Row 2, now Far Cry. Then Fallout. Then Fable. Then Gears. Then Call of Duty. Then Left 4 Dead....oh man. :lol

I always look at my bank account and gasp in amazement at the excess money I spy in there, and then I remember that Amazon only charges upon shipping. Am cry.

Nah, they're just there for 'immersion.' A lot of the stories I've heard about this game have had them involved in some way, so its seems like they're pretty widespread though, which is awesome.

I know, but it hurts so good amirite?

I will be crying both tears of joy and sorrow as I run through the jungle fighting for my life in Far Cry 2 and partake in trench warfare in the streets of post-apocalyptic Washington DC in Fallout 3.

About 20 or so percent after playing a bit over the weekend and still loving it. I think this game will be VERY under appreciated this holiday season. If I'd not been given an early copy I wouldn't have even played it and so far it could end up in my top 10 this year.

so is there any major difference between the 360 version and the PC one? I'm fairly certain that my PC could handle it better than the 360 (quad core 2.4ghz, 4gb ram, 4850 gpu) but unless it looks or plays stunningly better on the PC, I think I'm leaning towards the 360 version. Just because I know I can sell it later on to recoup some of my money. Am I wrong?

It's not actually trolling if you don't admit it

Play it on your PC for better graphics.

Only difference REALLY will be who you get to play against online and the map making community on consoles and PC. I think console folks will make some very cool shit.

Just a question about Euro release date - the OP says it's releasing on 23rd (Thursday), but I thought it was the 24th? (Along with everything else!)

EDIT: When I say Euro I mean UK.

My always trusty local gameshoppe 'Dimension Plus' website says it's due the 24th. But maybe they will put it on sale the 23rd :)

Just put money down for this game. Apparently it comes out on the 24th in Canada. :( Really bad timing for me since I have major midterms, but whatever.

Ugh, I was hoping that the guy at EB was just quoting a day he thought it'd be in. I guess it'll be a couple days of Fable for me before I get into Far Cry.

Thanks. Amazon and Play both have it listed for the 24th. I'll be checking my local Gamestation on the 23rd at lunch just in case :)

The UK release is the 24th, a Friday just like 99.9% of gaming releases.

BladedExpert-I think you will get it on Thursday as lot of stuff from Game arrives a day early.

I'm hoping some of the US forum members will have impressions of the PS3 version today/tomorrow as I'm still undecided about whether to get it or not.

Hmm, the benchmarks are not looking good on the PC. The average and minimum framerates are quite a bit lower than I would have expected when you consider the visuals being presented. It wouldn't be a problem if you could lock the game at 30 fps maximum (which would allow an even, constant framerate) but I doubt that is an option.

Honestly, the visuals just don't look all that impressive. With the visuals being presented, I would expect a rock solid 60 fps from the game. Then again, I'd be happy with 1360x768 with little to no AA. Perhaps my GTX260 can actually pull off a reasonably stable 60 fps with those settings. I suppose we'll see.
Nvidia just released a new beta driver (180.42). Far Cry 2 benchmarks (german):
http://www.pcgameshardware.de/aid,6...eiber_Geforce_18042_im_Far-Cry-2-Test/?page=2
Short summary:
- performance DX10 ultra high > performance DX9 ultra high
- GTX 260: +5% in DX9 and +27-30% in DX10 (only with AA tho)

Is there anything in the way of a comparison between the versions being released? I know it's been mentioned it's the same content and the PC version will of course look the best on quality hardware but I'm curious how close the PS3/X360 versions come to the PC version of the game?

I'm picking this up on my way lunch and can't wait to see the kind of levels people come up with over the next few weeks.

The editor looks and sounds like it's going to be a game in it's self.

What? Why would Assassin's Creed matter at all?
they keep comparing it to assassin's creed. not really sure why.

anyone have any mp impressions? neither review really talked much about it. i know that the map editor will be awesome, but if the mp doesn't play well then it won't matter.

Both in the review and in the the 1up FM podcast, the reviewer makes direct comparisons to Assassin's Creed in explaining some of the mechanics of the game.

Play.com has shipped it. Doubt I'll get it before the weekend anyway though. :(

1UP - B+
No matter Far Cry 2's faults, two fundamental aspects save the experience: It plays well, and it looks good. As much as I find malaria annoying, I also find the tactical freedom satisfying. Sure, the lip-sync's a bit off, and the fire details aren't as stunning as they should be -- yet the eye-candy objective's more than filled by sunrise filtering through the jungle trees or an intense fire eating its way through an outpost in the dead of night. I hate how baddies shrug off bullets, but I love the crazy (and graphic) injury animations. Even if I find the multiplayer too staid, I find the possibility of cool user-made levels (via the easy map editor) tantalizing. Like any good Grand Theft Auto, Far Cry 2's overall package makes up for any individual flaws -- enough for it to be on a short list of best FPS games this year -- and so it's fitting to summarize it as...well, GTA: Mogadishu.

Eurogamer - 8/10
Ultimately, the most immediate reference for Far Cry 2 is not Crytek's original, but Deus Ex (Invisible War, sadly), in the way it presents interesting ideas, often slightly heavy-handedly, and features a gently saggy seriousness that can sometimes come at the expense of pacing. The result is a fascinating game with successes and failures that are both equally mystifying; one that rebuilds its story regardless of how badly you mistreat it, and yet struggles to spice up a simple escort mission. Far Cry 2 is unforgettable rather than perfect, then; brilliant, frustrating, sombre and comical, it offers freedom within extremely curtailed limits, and strives to treat its players like adults. In the end it remains, true to its source material, a game that was born to struggle with itself.

Wait, 1UP got an Ubisoft review out on time? Did Ubisoft stop blacklisting them from getting review copies of games?

They took issue with the malaria implementation and, some quirky AI behavior, and the sturdiness of most enemies in the face of seemingly overwhelming firepower.

Narrative subtlety is a quality that defines the game, yet it's not the only force at work. The tension remains, too, but it's tension of a different kind: Far Cry 2 needs its Africa to provide both a realistic backdrop of suffering and unreliability, where guns jam, cars stall, and there's always a human motive lurking in the shadows, as well as a combustible playground, where unlikely heroics turn the tide of a skirmish, and there are enough explosive barrels to keep even the most unhinged joyseeker happy. Inevitably, sparks often fly when the two agendas converge: this is an admirably serious FPS, yet one that struggles with its own identity.

Essentially they say some of the things that set the game apart (the realism that Ubi injected by repairs, disease-management, and roadside checkpoints) actually hamper the experience because they're not fully realistic, and yet still restrict the player.

IGN UK review is up (8.4/10)

IGN UK said:
8.0 Presentation
Functional menus,
9.0 Graphics
When it works it's nothing short of spectacular - but it's prone to slipping up.
9.0 Sound
A persistent and unobtrusive soundtrack adds atmosphere, working well with the excellent ambient sounds.
8.0 Gameplay
For all that it offers in terms of innovation, Far Cry 2 is too often crippled by some agonising A.I.
8.5 Lasting Appeal
The single-player game is a beast that consumes upwards of thirty hours, and the map editor gives the multiplayer legs.
8.4
Impressive OVERALL
(out of 10 / not an average)

Sounds good, time for a 360 vs PS3 comparison! I read there is a performance meter on the map editor, so one could benchmark the game if the levels are identical.

I think there is no reason. Ubisoft said the two version are similar, the only differences is the frame rate slightly worse on the ps3 version in 'heavy' moments.

sad those complaints would really annoy me so I have to put this in the rental bin for now.

I was really hyped for it too.

That's good to hear. I guess Hsu and Crispin being gone helps, since they were the ones majorly pissing off Ubisoft.

30 hours? Nooooo! I've still got ~5 hours of Dead Space left, then Farcry 2 will take 30 hours, and Fallout 3 probably 100, which means I won't get to Fable 2 or Gears of War 2 until 2009 :( I also have to do a 90 minute literature review oral presentation, and write 3 literature reviews during this next month.

fairly certain that had nothing to do with it -- it was more of a natural thawing.

I don't know why people are down on getting diseases in the game. That type of stuff is really cool to me. Then again I have weird tastes for games -- I'm a fan of inventory management (sadly omitted in Far Cry 2)

8.5 @ Gamespot.

The review isn't up yet, but if you go to the PC section and choose 'Highest Rated' it falls between two 8.5 games.

Looking solid so far.

I'm still trying to decide if I want Far Cry or Fable.
I had the same dilemma and ended up going with Far Cry. For me, it came down to the fact that I'm not a big RPG guy, but even then, the Fable hype nearly sucked me in. I'll probably pick it up at some point early next year.

It kinda reminds me of those old German RPGs where your characters can die from stepping on a rock the wrong way and contracting tetanus as a result.

Scores are a bit lower than expected, but I already know what the game has to offer and that it'll easily be one of my favorite gaming experiences of the year. I absolutely adore open-ended/sandbox games, especially one as immense as Far Cry 2 seemingly is.

Anyone have any idea when Steam officially unlocks it? Is it tonight?

Another brick in the great wall of games due this week and next. Something will have to be omitted and moved to the Christmas list--there's simply not enough time!

It's too bad the guys at the checkpoints attack you on sight, it would be cool if you had to drive through them as they searched your car and checked out who you are or stuff like that. I could also think of some cool gameplay things for that, like trying to smuggle things through, or being able to pay them off to not check your things. And i don't get the malaria at all, it seems like it's there only to annoy you. It would have been better if it was something you could randomly contract, then permanently cure, like vampirism in Oblivion.

Anyway, it looks like it's a really good game aside from those annoying things. I like these open world style shooters that let you attack them how you want. I'm not too worried about the AI, it can't be that much worse than other shooters I've enjoyed recently.
