Enjoying it a lot, but I understand that probably won't go down well in this thread.

Just saying if you're running an ATi card especially in crossfire definitely get the latest hotfix drivers.

http://support.ati.com/ics/support/default.asp?deptID=894&task=knowledge&questionID=38664

EDIT: Don't use 8x AA with the hotfix.

Yeah, 8xAA with the hotfix is kinda broken in terms of framerate. I got 10-12 more fps by going down to 4xAA. I'm currently at 2xAA and thinking about dropping that down to no AA at all since the game simply doesn't need it at 1920x1200.

Still, reading everyone's impressions this morning, I am saddened because I agree with every single one of them and I've hardly made my way through this game. I am going to give it more of a chance.

The problem is, as the rant on the last page put it, this is an arcade shooter that does not have cohesion between its realistic presentation (keeping you in first person view), gun porn (jamming, misfires, etc.), shooting mechanics, and world interaction. I know Crysis isn't the most interactive world (tin roof shacks falling apart is about the extent of it) but it felt way more procedural than what we have in FC2. And for a game where you do nothing but shoot shoot shoot, the mechanics there simply aren't satisfying enough.

I miss Crysis. At least I have Warhead to play if/when I get bored and sick of FC2.

PS3 version here. Loving it so far. Extremely immersive, visuals are great. I didn't notice any tearing, just some very slight stutters here and there. My expectations were pretty reserved though, as I really didn't have this game on my radar until late last week. Anyway, I'm alternating between this and LBP, and I think this will satisfy my shooter needs just fine until Gears and Resistance hit in a couple of weeks.

Far Cry 2.. what a disappointment and it's an overrated experience.

The guns have WAY too much recoil and the driving is COMPLETELY tedious. The pacing of the game is terrible.

90% of the time you spend in this game is driving around the fucking country.

Also, why on earth is the game running at like 20 FPS for me? It dips to 10FPS from what I can tell.

I'm running it on 1280x720 on 'very high' with a E6600, 2GB RAM, 640MB 8800GTS.

That is killing most of my 'enjoyment' from this game. Also the visuals don't look that good.

I prefer playing games with a pad anyway. Maybe I should rent the PS3 version and see how it is?

I run the same settings except with DX10 on and at 720p res. My CPU and GPU is also better than yours but I get around the same FPS.???

dunno, you running ultra shaders and aa? those two are fps killers but what i've found with these newer cards is , the resolution doesn't really matter that much and your gonna get very similar frame rates at low res and high, buy a 1080p screen :)

Also causes severe mouse lag/acceleration for me... :(

same for me, mouse accel + weird jerking although it is virtually the same performance as dx9 for once , only 1fps behind

Change drivers. Most people find this game to be extremely well optimized.

For the most part many of the problems listed here are the same ones I'm having with the game. Hit detection, checkpoints, enemy AI, etc... My biggest frustration is having to travel so much and hitting those god damn guard posts.

Overall I'm enjoying the game and once I get more into it I think it'll be a solid experience. I didn't realize how big the world really is, with both a northern and southern district both of equal size...so that scares me b/c the traveling is just so tedious.

I bought on a tight budget and regret it a tiny bit; I'd return if Gamestop allowed (do they?) I will most likely trade this in when done...

Oh yea and the sprinting sucks hard, I guess your guy gets tired or something cause my screen always blurs/blacks out after a few seconds. However I think over time the length of a sprint increases...

I just started playing and I'm having a great time with it. I've only played about an hour or two so far but it seems like a really facinating game. The atmosphere is great. This is turning into what I wanted Stalker to be. It's open, atmospheric and unlike stalker, this game has polish and a great engine.

On my 2.4ghz core 2 due, 2GB DDR2 and 8800GT I have all settings on either High or Very High except for shadows, which I set to medium (it gives a huge fps boost). The game runs silky smooth like that.

I took some pics of my setup. They were at 1680x1050 but I resized them obviously. I don't care what other people say. This game looks gorgeous. It may not be Crysis Warhead but it does damn fine!

just did an install and my screens looks a bit better than yours mostly because of the shadows. Playing on a 4b quadcore 9550 + 4870 @ 1920x1200. I'm not a pc gamer so I'm not sure if I'm sold on the controls but looking at the visuals. I might have to change over from the console version of FO3 for the superioriest pc version

Is there a good way of stealth killing someone with the machete? Its like every time I sneak up on a guy I have to slash and then just keep swinging wildly to make sure I hit him a second time.

Ya if I could, I would swap this game for Fable 2. People seem to be enjoying that game way more, and I think I probably would too. Oh well, I'm still going to try and beat FarCry2, because I paid for it. Maybe it'll get better.

Negativity in this thread is crippling. I've been debating whether to get this, Fable II or Dead Space tomorrow morning. I might end up getting none of them. Only Left 4 Dead can save gaming now.

OMG do NOT pick Far Cry 2 over either Fable 2 or Dead Space. Those games are better. I beat Dead Space just before starting Far Cry 2, and I can tell you for a fact that Dead Space is better.

Would Dead Space work fine on PC with a wired 360 controller?

That's the best way to play it. Dead Space seems to be tuned best for a 360 pad, and looks best on PC, so that's what I'd suggest, if you have a good PC (plus its $10 cheaper). The main complaints for it on the PC in reviews are that it seems to be better with a 360 pad than keyboard/mouse. Otherwise just get it on 360.

Yeah, I just tried playing it some more and this game is definitely not a write off.

For the fuck of it, I decided to rile up the entire town in the cease fire area by stealing their diamonds right in front of their face. The firefights can get pretty tense and I don't really have any problems bringing folks down with my guns (shotgun and pistol right now).

I've even gotten 1 hit kills with the pistol before in ironsights, and that's more than I can say for STALKER. :)

I think I was playing this game wrong from an action perspective. Crysis taught me to play smart(er) than any other FPS with its nanosuit. This game just wants you to blow shit up and brute force your way through it. The stealth mechanics are fucking ass so there's no point.

I will be finishing this game I think, but yeah, probably not going to dwell on it before I move onto Warhead, Fallout 3, Fable 2, ArmA, Witcher, blah blah blah.

This board is a lot bigger than some of the other ones I frequent, so I have a really hard time remembering names+pc specs.

BTW, I do like the graphics in this game. Sure, a little devoid of art direction, but overall it works, even if I feel like I'm running through a benchmark tech demo sometimes.

I stopped playing just now because I got killed at a checkpoint. :p

The negativity in this thread is indeed crippling.

Remember that reviewers are gamers too, and many of them felt that the game was excellent. Not only that but there have been plenty of GAFers who stopped in to say they were really enjoying it (read back quite a few pages before the rants started coming in).

Decide for yourself by renting it or something before you shun it.

Dead Space runs great and plays great on a pad. no pc game should be marked down for bad keyboard and mouse controls if it plays great on the 360 pad (ie plug and play with correct onscreen prompts). no pc gamer should be without a 360 pad in this day and age. just make sure you use vsync in your graphics card drivers and not in game (in game vsync locks you at 30 fps).

far cry 2 looks really nice, if yeah, no crysis still. definately hoping to borrow it before buying, if i have time.

That's not bad.

One trick that might interest some people is that Ubisoft actually saw fit to include a framerate limiter in their game (a great decision). I was getting a pretty solid 60 fps with some minor drops here and there, but I found that locking the game at 30 fps, while initially limiting, actually feels good in the end in that the game NEVER drops below 30 fps. I even bumped up details to Ultra High, resolution to 1080p, and anti-aliasing to 4x and the game always holds 30 fps. So, really, I think I might just try enjoying it at 30 fps with v-sync as provides a perfect framerate in all conditions. I wish more games had options like this as I value a constant framerate above all else.

The command is obvious as you simply type "help" in the console and it's one of the few commands listed (something like "gpu_maxfps").

Interestingly enough, I do believe the minor drops I experienced while playing were actually the result of my CPU as the game seems to benefit from quad cores. The area during the benchmark where you first see all of the fire drops to ~52 fps no regardless of the settings (unless I go with Ultra High and then it drops to like 42). It didn't seem to budge no matter which video settings I tweaked. This is why the 30 fps lock is a nice feature as I can enjoy the game without any variation in framerate.

Interesting thing about locking the framerate. I actually do the same thing in Enemy Territory Quake Wars ....framerate stays locked at 30fps when it's on and it's what the devs originally intended for it anyway before giving the option to unlock with patches

Definitely will try this in FC2 cause while the performance is good, it's mostly in the 35-45fps anyway and rarely hits 60fps for me. My settings:

Everything set to "Very High"
2x AA
1280x800
Vsync off

I will say that I wasn't crazy about the first 2 hours of the game. I just wanted them to get on with it already....though once I actually finished it and the world "opened up," I was glad I did all the preliminary learning as opposed to something like STALKER's disjointed first few hours
I didn't wanna stop playing last night but had to so I get could get some decent sleep. From what I have played though, I really enjoyed it and actually thought the AI was pretty competent...at least in the sense of establishing a good "back and forth" with the firerights. They always seem to be constantly moving, so you have to too, to get an advantage....I like that

Also gotta read the wiki entry so I know more about the factions and such...didn't like how the game just dropped you into the thick of it and gave no real context for anything 'cept The Jackal...though maybe that was the point and you figure out more later on?

Do agree with the floaty, slow cursor in Menus though ...very annoying

What I think kills this game for some people over others is its pacing. If you went into this game thinking it would be a balls to the wall shooter... you would be dissapointed for sure. This is definetly a opened ended world FPS that I feel you really need to have the right attitude towards. Although I wish there was a better way of jumping around the map quickly besides the buses.

The overall atmposphere the game gives off of being in Africa is strong and I can see why they make you do lots of traveling across it...its beautiful and a very different setting from other games. The story so far is extremly serious. They were definetly going for the more realistic approach. I think they make you travel far distaces because in real life, things are not going to be quick and convienent, yet I can see this boring or getting repetative for ALOT of people. It might even happen for me (only played a few hours) but so far I love driving around, exploring, and just taking in the mentality of... "I'm in fucking Africa!" and just eat that shit up.

Definetly not a game for everyone though.

As for a fun time I had:

I had to make my way to the far east. Ahead of me was a checkpoint... Do I just pull over and take the men out? Or do I feel like hitting the gas and making a break for it?

I hit the gas. Bullets go whizzing by my jeep. I hear the roar of a engine start as I sail past the checkpoint at blazing speed. I decide to get further up the road and do a quick e-brake turn around. I hop from my wheel to the turrent gun mounted above as the enemy quickly approaches. Once the enemy is in better site I lay open a can of turrent-whoop-ass. I make quick work of them but then hear another vehicle. I decide to make a break for it.

I jump back to the wheel and take off into the wildness...looking back I see another vehicles dust trail, they're coming! I'm head towards a nearby river when my engine dies from gun fire. I make a mad dash for the river and find a nearby boat and make a hasty escape.

Its moments like these that make the game such a rush to play.

You guys suck. I'm having a blast with this. If you put a little time into the game all the flaws go away.

A) Bad gun recoil and enemies being damage sponges. That's not a problem after about an hour since you will have enough diamonds to buy a real weapon. My silenced MP5 barely bounces with each shot and takes guys down like nothing, and it only cost me like 15 diamonds.

B) Long travel. I can see why this upsets people, but I don't really feel bothered by it. There are a ton of things to do along the way, and once you find a buggy you go fast enough that it's barely an issue. You can get from one side of the map to the other in about 5 minutes.

C) Malaria. Holy crap was this over exaggerated. You get pills within the first 20 minutes of the game that make your attacks go away. Wow.

You guys are so harsh on this board lol. Those of you who wanted to know how i game and happen to kick your ass everytime i go online....i only use my mouse to look around and my right hand exclusively takes care of that...and it is a touchpad mouse!!! My left hand takes care of everything else. I use my left hand to shoot, crouch, strafe left and right, jump, go through inventory, etc.. SO a typical layout would be this, ENTER key is shoot, RIGHT CTRL is for crouch, RIGHT ALT is for alt fire(zoom etc), SPACE BAR is for jumping, COMMA and PERIOD key are used for strafing, : and " are used as extra keys for anything useful like maybe zooming in and out, [ and ] are used for going back and forth through inventory. I also use backslash and dash and plus key and forwardslash, etc...

I believe my key setup is far superior to the dinosaur w, a, s, d. I don't know how people play that way.

I guess I'm spoiled by the good games I recently played where I enjoyed them from beginning to end.

I intend to keep playing Far Cry 2 though, and I do believe that I'll enjoy it more further in, but even in the tutorial the need to drive so much is killing it. I hate driving so much in FPS games, and this one is more driving than shooting.

But look at it this way. It took me like 2 hours tops to get all the stuff needed to make this game not annoying, and I've only done like 3 of the like 90 or so missions in the game. This game is fucking huge, and that's a very small percentage of the playtime.

No frame rate stutters really, and I tried to put it to the test by basically setting everything around me on fire. Framerate didn't flinch.

I did actually have some slight framerate hiccups when moving to a new area, but that's all I can remember...it's very smooth. I have had audio cutting in/out sometimes, but it's not a big deal. Solid port, but I haven't played the PC version so I cant compare it to that.
PS3 version here also. I've had the same thing with stutters. Not many, but there are some. But I thought I was the only one with the weird audio hiccups. I was shooting and I swear I saw the muzzle flash but no gunshot was heard. Weird. And arrrgghhhh! The enemies are a pain in the ass sometimes. I swear one of the AI enemies was just tagging me with a shotgun from maybe a hundred feet away. WTF? To me the controls also feel slightly floaty. Usually in fps games, I turn the sensitivity up one notch from default, maybe two. But I've left it at default here cause to me any higher and it "feels" a little harder/sloppier to aim. I've even tried the sensitivity a notch lower, but it was just too slow for me. It's like overall, the controls don't feel as smooth as say, Resistance or COD 4. Not saying the controls in Far Cry 2 are broken, just to me they feel slightly floaty. But even with these issues, I've been sucked into the openness of the game. The world feels huge to me. And the different ways you can approach situations, I like. Except trying to be stealthy with the machete....it's useless. But the world feels very immersive. Just driving around the African planes in my jeep to the next objective I found fun. ;) The game's not perfect, but I'm having fun with it....

Having a blast with the game so far but I have a question. Should I be doing the buddie requests instead of the main objectives. I have done the first 2 quests from the guy in the town (the 2 oasis ones) and each time one of my buddies called me and gave me another quest but it seems like I can only do one of them because after finishing the main objective the other one goes away.

I'm with you on this one! Its a very fun and immersive game. Once you've played for a couple hours... missions open up, new weapons are bought, and the game is just good times.

I love how you can take a mission for the weapons guy and basically you can ambush a convoy and get the new weapons for purchase at the store! Nothing like waiting for that vehicle to come around the corner when you have your rocket launcher pointed at them.:D

I guess that's the thing, I went into this game thinking it was going to be a more polished STALKER and it's nothing like STALKER.

It's basically Mercenaries or GTA in first person with less freedoms in some areas, and more freedoms in others (AI, etc.)

Now that I've readjusted my approach, the game is more fun.

It's basically just two ways of completing the same objective. The buddy ones are just more interesting so I tend to do those.

I found a tight area and laid down a wall of flames with the flame thrower. Then when the truck stopped I ran around back and tossed a grenade in the back and ran away. It was great!

I found the best grenade launcher in one of the save houses, so I just did a ton of convoy missions with it. It was so awesome. I'd just park a car across the road and hide in the bushes or on a hill within view. It's like Raider of the Lost Ark only the nazis don't kidnap you and get their faces melted.

Has anyone been able to take out entire squads with out getting into a gun fight? I tried with the machete, but failed because someone found the body before I could get to him.

So are there any stealth ways to complete some of the earlier missions?

This is refreshing to hear. I AM enjoying the game so far (only about 5-6 hours, completed only 1 weapons mission and 2 others) and am hoping that it picks up once I start getting more buddies, story, and weaponry. With all the traveling, I want some solid guns and some solid FUN.

Patching this game would be a gift from above. Enemy respawns, PS3 tearing perhaps, TRUE widescreen resolution, enemy damage...

The most terrifying thing in the game is hearing a car revving up to hit you and kill you instantly. You either shoot the driver or get the hell out of the way...but you only have a second to decide which.

Hah, this game is great.
