Far Cry 2 |OT| of Money, Diamonds, and Military Checkpoints

Ubisoft does it again >:-/

I'll give them credit for the Dunia engine, the game looks great. But!!! The game already smells of repetition. Do some tasks, find diamonds, drive around, get shot at, rinse and repeat.

I don't see how the malaria thing makes the game anymore interesting. It's a plot point, but an impedance to your gameplay. I'd be in the middle of a crossfire, and suddenly I have to take a pill? Geez.

The guns lack punch. It's like Far Cry 1 (the port Ubi did) where shooting didn't feel exhilirating, it just felt dull. This game has it too.

And finally, as many have already mentioned, the instant respawning of guard posts is definitely, definitely horrid. To me, it's a game breaker.

I think I'm going to get rid of it, I still have Fallout 3 in my backlog...

Don't all FPS games do this over and over?
Should they have made the maps smaller and make it an 8 hour game so people don't get bored so quickly?

I think there are ways to mask 'repetition' by making the game interesting. This one isn't one of them. I can read their design documents by playing the game.

I actually read about the lame ending too...

There's quite a big difference between a game that's repetitive and a game that's twice as long as it should be that ends up sacrificing quality to reach that game length.

If Ubisoft got rid of the second map entirely, and used that extra development time to make the missions on the first map more interesting, then it could have been a phenomenal 20 hour game, instead of a pretty good 20 hour game followed by another 15-20 hours of annoying tedium.

I apologize because I have not done much research into the game, but does FC 2 have the same multiplayer options/map building that the first XBOX one did? (360)

Fixed. That is the thing of this game that felt most out of place for me. It didn't really matter which side you worked on because it changed nothing. If they had a loyalty system (including pissing off factions with the hit jobs/ underground/ buddy missions) that would make some check points friendly, the choices would have a lot more meaning.

Do you really think people want to play a single-player FPS for much more than 8 to 12 hours anyway?

Good, fun, relatively short single-player mode with kickass multiplayer is all FPS fans are asking. Making a sandbox-single-player FPS is retarded, waste of time, can't work.

Yes it does. It's improved as well.
You can search for maps, and maps are rated by the community.

Ok. Question.

I am playing through the single player yet about 1/2 the time I can't secure guard posts or even camp sites and it states that they are still not mine. I'm I missing something? Is this a bug? I am using the ps3 version.

STALKER begs to differ, but at the same time it haves RPG elements.

It seems like they started into the game with the intent of making your choices more meaningful, but then someone told them it had to appeal more to the mainstream.

Speak for yourself there buddy. Far Cry 2 blew me away and I think I had it listed as my third favorite game from 2008.

I much prefer it to a retarded experience like CoD4 where the game puts you down a set path and doesn't allow much deviation from one person's experience to the next's.

Ok, I hated this game for the first three hours, but it is really starting to grow on me. I am obtaining some pretty awesome weapons, and getting used to its quirks.

So apparently UbiSoft aren't even close to fixing the game breaking bugs:

I guess I might as well throw my copy in the garbage then. Thanks UbiSoft, 60 euro for a shiny coaster is a steal!

LOL.

I picked it up for $20, and managed to get rid of it for the same price so no complaints really.

This was my impression as well. The tutorial section with the weak weapons almost killed it for me, that and I'm not a good FPS gamer. But with better weapons, an understanding of the buddy system, the less linear gameplay after the tutorial and the discovery of stealth weapons and armor, I'm really starting to enjoy it all. Although the driving between places is starting to really get tedious.

Hey guys, i've encountered a really annoying bug and can't progress any further - can anyone help?

I'm playing the PS3 version and i've just done the mission where
you have to save Nasreen Davar on the barge in the southern area
. I complete the mission and go to talk to her, but she's not in the drivers compartment - she'd directly underneath on the deck. When I go in the drivers compartment she starts talking, despite being below me - however, when she stops talking I have to press triangle to initiate the next part of the conversation, but I can't do this from in the drivers compartment and she won't talk when I drop down to her level and press triangle. Foolishly, i've only got one save. Has anyone else encoutered this glitch who could provide a work around, or am I fucked? I seriousley don't want to start all over again, i've put so much time into the game already :(

I'm really enjoying this game but there are a couple of things that are starting to annoy me, first off the screen tearing isn't terrible but it spoils it for me because it's a really pretty game other than that, the aiming feels ever so slightly off and the checkpoints should at least have a 12 hour in game spawn time until back-up arrives. but the voice acting is by far the worst offender in this game it's just so shitty and fast.
apart from that it's a really fun game, mowing down plants and trees with my SAW is fucking awesome, driving in the night with the head lights on looks really good and the weapons really feel like there is power behind them.

anyway like I said just a few complaints but it's still a class game and i'm only 20% through.

I think I remember something similar happening to me, I also have this on PS3. Did you walk completely into the room above? I think what I did was save in that room above and ended up "triggering" the next step. I just wanna make sure we're talking about the same mission where
you have to escort the barge down a river and you have to man the mounted grenade launchers?
Reason I ask is because I was helping someone else in the same mission. Everybody's games seem to play out differently in which "buddies" you end up with. It was also after this mission where I ended up with that save glitch. Right after I get to shore, I saved afterwords. I ended up dying and when I went to reload the last save, it stayed stuck at the loading screen. But it was taken care of after a patch I d/loaded later. It's good to have two saves going for this game. I used to do like you and just overwrite the same save, but lately with many games I've had two saves going...

Game is mediocre.

It's repetitive, as in, you have to kill the same stupid guard posts over and over again. There's fast respawn time, and then there's just stupid respawn times. I shouldn't have to kill a guard post that I just blew to smithereens 5 minutes ago. Worse yet, all those shanty shacks that crumbled to my RPG truck attacks come back just as quick! Talk about immersion killer.

Then there are the missions, which are so utterly simplistic. And why would I do buddy missions to make the missions longer? Why should I care to increase the history? Why should I care about the APC or whoever else? What's the point of your character having Malaria?

So many horrible game design decisions.

Nah, it's the one a bit later where
you've just brought the barge to shore with all the weapons and you have to go warn the doctor in town - then all hell breaks loose and you have to escape, I saved outside of town just as my buddy from the barge phones up and says she needs saving
. I've tried reloading a few times now with no effect, but i'll try saving in the room to see if that sorts it out - hopefully that'll work, but either way thanks for the tip :)

the MP was EXTREMELY clunky and stupid. I kill someone by sniping him in the head dead on,twice, and he literally takes 3 seconds to suddenly fall and die all while still being able to run and shoot. also, everything about it seems like a completely different game than the SP one.

wow, i can't imagine anybody liking it.

You've been glitched and there's no fix, you have to start over from the beginning of the game.

He was probably leveled higher than you. It sucks, because I would empty an entire clip on someone and he would fire two bullets and I would be dead.

that explains the multiple headshots, but still doesn't explain why someone will wait for three seconds to drop dead- all while being able to move and shoot freely. it's like you didn't kill them but they suddenly have a heart attack three seconds later.

the SP looks amazing and I love it. but the MP looks AND controls absolutely terribly, even without those silly issues I've mentioned. it's like a completely different game. I don't think I ever felt so much contrast between SP and MP of the same game before.

Yep, it certainly looks this way. More fool me for not having multiple saves, but even so it's still pretty unnaceptable that Far Cry 2 features such a game-breaking glitch, but hey; Ubisoft have already got my cash, they obviousley don't give a shit.

I'm about to start over again, but I really don't have any confidence that this glitch or one similar won't happen again.

Apparently, a patch is coming in late Jan or early Feb according to the Far Cry 2 forums. Whether or not it fixes your problem is anybody's guess though I wouldn't count on it. The whole save game not loading glitch has been around since Day 1 and they still haven't resolved it and a recent post on that forum by a developer states that they are trying to replicate the issue on consoles and so on. God knows what they've been doing all this time.

Ubisoft® Announces “The Official Far Cry® 2 Map Editing Guide”

A Book Written by Gamers for Gamers

LONDON, UK - January 27, 2008 - Today, Ubisoft announced a unique partnership with Charles River Media, one of North America's leading publishers of video game development books. Both companies are working together to create one of the first game design books written by gamers for gamers.

"Designing Wargames: The Official Far Cry® 2 Map Editing Guide" will be published in the spring of 2009. Written and edited by David Hutchison, author of “Playing to Learn: Video Games in the Classroom,” the book will comprise of map making techniques and advice contributed by Far Cry 2 map makers around the world.

"This is the next milestone in gamer-generated content," says David Hutchison, Associate Professor at Brock University. "Far Cry 2 makes it easy for both PC and console gamers to create cool new multiplayer maps that they can then share with other gamers. We want to honour this effort by inviting the Far Cry 2 map-making community to contribute to this first-of-its-kind game design book."

A lot of you are wondering what is happening with the corrupt save bug that causes the player to get stuck at a couple of different completion percentages.
Ever since we received the first feedback on this from our support team and forums we’ve being investigating the issue.

As usual our primary objective was to collect as much relevant information as possible through forums, customer support and so on. We managed to gather a lot of corrupted save games from console and PC users. Unfortunately, all of that data wasn’t helping to understand how the corruption occurs, only what the effect of the corruption was. After trying different hardware and settings for weeks we recently managed to reproduce the bug on a development kit. We are currently repeating the same steps on retail consoles and on PC. After that, we will be able to move on to the next stage where our studio team works on a solution for all platforms.

We fully appreciate that it’s a frustratingly long wait for those of you experiencing this bug. We’re keen to resolve this issue for you as soon as possible and we are absolutely committing all the resources we can towards achieving this.

So basically we'll have to wait for God knows how long. I don't even have the energy to care anymore.

That's terrible, man. What's weird though is, I had that save glitch happen to me on PS3, but after a title update, I got past the glitch. I guess I was lucky maybe? But still, this blows for people who want to play the game. Ubisoft should really get on the ball with their QA. They really do release some buggy ass software.

I have to say that aside from a bug preventing mission progress (thank fuck for multiple save files) and some inevitable repetitiveness I really, really like this game.

My brother is the same, he saw me playing it at my place and he was so impressed he grabbed a copy and he's hooked too.
It can get repetitive, sure, but some of the things that have happened at random moments are as good as some of the best scripted moments I've played in a FPS.

So, like I was saying, the only bug I've come across is that I couldn't accept a mission from a faction because the game wouldn't load anyone in the faction building.
It would let me in, but the door to the leaders room is closed.
I just re-loaded an earlier save so I only lost about 30 minutes playtime.

My brother hasn't had an issue yet, and he's at around 55% (I'm around 65%) and we're both playing on 360.

And god the game looks fantastic.

I've been playing this off and on over the past week and a half. Is it inevitable
that your friends get killed at Mike's Bar at the end of the first act? It always ends with you being lectured to by the Jackal in that desert hut, right?

Found it kind of annoying considering I would save the friends being attacked each time. Cool game, I like the nonlinear aspect of it, but I wish they just had a quick travel function to get to places you had already been. The buses help a little, but you're still stuck wasting time to get back to a place to save or get a new mission assignment.

Hmm. I need to learn how to use the buses :p

Anyway, I think I am gonna restart the game from scratch after finishing fallout 3. I just think that I was too rushed when I had 3 days from gamefly to get through as much as I could. I sacrificed a lot to get a lot done :p

Completed the game today on 360.

+ Absolutely gorgeous visuals
+ Stunning lighting and environmental effects
+ Basic gameplay mechanics are fun
+ Very impressive fire and explosion systems

...

- Lack of variety in gameplay mechanics, weapons and enemies
- Completely underutilized vehicles - boats, glider
- The amazing terrain variety is not really utilized to enhance gameplay
- Missions are the same thing all over - get mission, drive, kill/explode, drive back, get medicine
- Doing fetch quests gives little to no upside
- Tedious save point structure i.e. lack of autosave

Overall, the game became really boring for me after the first 5 hours. I think I put in a total of 15 hours to complete it, and that's with getting almost all checkpoints in the first map

Boats are underutilized? I used boats all of the time. The glider...eh, I fiddled with it when I saw it, but it's relative weaknesses made it seem like a really poor choice of vehicle for most situations. Great for getting down mountains in a hurry, though.

As for the save complaints, PC really is the prime platform for the game. I don't know why the save system on the console is so screwed up.

I also finished it yesterday despite the save bug, played for like 9 hours without stopping so I could avoid it :D

Total playing time was about 30 hours on the in-game clock. The ending was crap but the game is still one of, if not the best game of 2008.

I would give it

damn I should have listened to you on this one :(
wanted a FPS to hold me until KZ2 so I picked this up on Steam tonight and really disappointed. After loving Far Cry I thought this would be the same just in the jungle and man was I wrong. About 3-4 hours in and I feel like I am doing MMO fetch quests over and over now. Should I abandon ship now? does it get any better or will I be doing the same thing over and over again for the next 10 hours?

You're about to make the same mistake many, many people have made before you. That is, giving up at the beginning. I've written A LOT about this on previous pages, so sadly I don't have the energy to do it again. But look back in the thread for some of my horribly long posts.

I picked up a brand new Collector's Edition of FC2 for $40 the other day at Gamestop. Not a bad deal. PS3 version since thats the system I can bring to work with me.

I really like it so far. Only a few hours in but it's a blast. Running over zebras and buffalo was hilarious.
