I just meant that Square has had a history of not using their playable in-game engine for the most cinematic scenes in the past.

That's not really true. There are a large number of cutscenes in every FF post 6 that are in-engine. There are a number that are even part CG part real time. The number of FMV sequences has dropped, I would imagine, from FFX to FFXII too. That trend might be accurate from FF7 to 8 to X to 12 (9 might be an outlier).

God this looks so good!!!1111

edit: Oh, I see what you mean. The MOST cinematic. Yeah, I guess I could see that.

The unfortunate downside of MGS4 is that the lighting engine gets a massive downgrade in quality during gameplay. :P
Well, all objects still cast proper shadows, but the shadow resolution took a hit. It was still pretty good looking in that regard, however.

Man I need to see this movie

That was generally the case last gen, though. The two games I mentioned as examples did that as well. MGS2, MGS3, and all of the DMC games used much higher quality models during cutscenes than what you saw in gameplay. Same deal for Square's games (though FFX had variable model quality DURING cutscenes).

I have a feeling you won't be disappointed here.

Ha ha, are you serious?

Show me some character models that you deem superior. I'd love to see them.

This is crazy nitpicking, but I sure hope those rings around her neck aren't stuck to it. :P

Oh sorry I meant DMC4, the downgrade there is pretty clear. MGS4 looks pretty much identical all around to me.

I wonder if the women shave everyday while they are running from the law and fighting monsters? Cause Lightening's pit's looks awfully clean. Maybe better than my gf's.

If Kojima had his way, you'd have to stop every day with your unfoldable tent and play a shaving minigame with the six-axis.

It would affect your relationship with the characters in your party too.
Lightning's sword strikes would be 20% weaker if you nicked her over 3 times.

Of course they'd co-sponsor the game with Venus.

How can you even make such a judgement at this point? The focus of those scenes ARE the models. Let's wait until we see full backgrounds before passing judgement. The backgrounds that we CAN see are still much more detailed than what you'd get on PS2, though.

pretty much my view (god that crystal cave pick attacks my eyes). Except the edges of hair are also pretty poor too. Game is still wonderful looking though.

What?! There isn't a single other game on the market or shown to the public with hair of this quality. Show me one example of something that does it better with such crazy hair. It's very impressive.

It's FINAL FANTASY.

The character designs are FINE.

Do we want blandy blandyed up characters ? Go play Blue Dragon. That's like ... zero accessories on ANYONE.

I didn't make the argument that they should not have any accessories. That's something you made up in an attempt to dismiss my opinion. They can be wearing anything so long as it makes sense. Character designs should reflect the characters personality and cultural background and these don't because they are too cartoonish. Granted, I'm not entirely clear on the backstory of all the characters but, judging by previous Final Fantasy games, I don't think my critique is entirely unjustified.

Not saying they are superior, but Star Ocean 4 models are comparable to what I'm seeing here.

FFXIII looks great, though.

I'm wearing a bracelet on my right wrist.
It doesn't make sense that I'm wearing it. After all, it doesn't give me +4 to thieving or whatever the hell. It's just an accessory.

I wear a fidel castro hat sometimes, not for any particular purpose other than it looks good.

If someone has a necklace or something on, does it HAVE to have a purpose? Can't it just look cool? (Which it does, it doesn't look cartoony. Most cartoons have much simpler designs, as they're easier to draw).

Star Ocean 4 models are much more "anime" styled and don't have the facial detail, going off of the pictures I've seen on the internet.

EDIT: OMG apparently now the game looks like shit ... fuck I need new EYEZZZZZZZZ

Really? I thought the opposite :lol

Though "shitty" is a strong word but there are games coming within the next year with better looking characters, did you see what they did with Nom-cham?

For some reason Mr.33's beard bothers me now too... :lol

I disagree, but they did get closest to the CG with her.

To me there's quite a disparity between some of the screenshots, for both games. Some look really good, while others make me wonder if they're shooting for 60fps. They have plenty of time to go, anyway.

Not that long. They have to finish the demo by December. If the demo sucks, that's going to affect the hype train pretty badly. They're crunching to polish the demo up to perfection now.

The stubble shot is real time and you can see the veins in his god damned neck.

God damn.

Duck, I'm sure the demo will be good. After all, it's going to be some crazy FFX-2 battle system coupled with FF12 field, isn't it?

I don't know how the hell they could fuck it up. I mean, I'd be happy with a marginally enhanced FFX-2 system. But I think there's going to be the ability to freeze time a bit, judging from the trailers they've shown.

I'm betting it'll be like FFX-2 but then you can freeze time and think out larger actions.

Damn it now I'm frothing :lol

You are still under the impression that I have an extreme stance on the issue. I don't. Using your own example, you are wearing one bracelet, not three or four or more as some of these characters are. You are wearing a Castro cap, one, not two or three or four. The character design in these games borders on the ridiculous because it goes beyond mere functionality or decoration. It's excessive and unbelievable. They are not well thought out character designs.

Why does everything have to be believable? The clue is in the name - Final Fantasy

But does FFXIII has TITS WITH VISIBLE VEINS?

Mistwalker wins. :O

this game does make LOST ODYSSEY look like it was done in a different generation. Lost Odyssey was so damn ugly with the horse faced humans + all round hideous looking engine.

looks way worse at full scale.

I know girls that wear plenty of bracelets like Nom-chan.

The whole arm band thing that Lightning has going on is something I've seen before in real life.

None of the character have multiple hats.

On occasion, I wear an undershirt, dress shirt, sweater top, and dress jacket over it.

Sorry if I'm painting you as an extremist, but these character designs are meant to be slightly fantastical, and the argument of "too many zippers" doesn't really hold water here.

There's no way of answering that question without sounding offensive i'm afraid.

Japanese have a well-documented, culturally ingrained self image problem. It's not racist.

I dunno. Rage looks extremely CGish. I'm sure if any SE worked with id, it could look just like that.

Yeah, you really don't. Lightning and Nom-chan are from completely different societies. Lightning/Mr. whatever live up in a city that floats in the sky, a society which has separated themselves from the 'lesser' people living below. Nom-chan(red hair) is from the world below.

People are complaining about the character designs in this thread? Are they LTTP to every design Nomura has done in the last 8 years?
