freaking ugly game
oh come on, it's not ugly. it's just uneven and has horrible hair and weaker skin textures. but it's not ugly :D

oh, it also has hideous costume design where FFXIII (and especially versus) have some of nomura's best designs ever

Really? I thought the opposite :lol

Though "shitty" is a strong word but there are games coming within the next year with better looking characters, did you see what they did with Nom-cham?

For some reason Mr.33's beard bothers me now too... :lol
From this:

I disagree, but they did get closest to the CG with her.
I don't know I like the picture with the environments that look like a painting. But with all these CG videos they've released, these screens are a letdown...big time. The character models are definitely downgraded from the CG videos, and the environment just looks so bad.

It's really disappointing, as I am a big FF fan.

I dunno. Rage looks extremely CGish. I'm sure if any SE worked with id, it could look just like that.
Rage looks great, but the character models are not on the same level as FFXIII from what I can tell. The two games are VERY different, however, and the Rage shots are mostly showing models you'll see during gameplay.

I agree. I loved LO, but it was often pretty ugly. Character models had a lot of flat texture detail and the hair was generally AWFUL. I thought Blue Dragon was FAR more impressive to behold. Both had serious framerate issues, though. The budgets were probably MUCH less and they were released earlier on. I think they were limited more by the creators than the hardware.

You're really that disappointed? This is the closest we've ever seen to Square CG in realtime. Of course it isn't going to be dead on with the CG, but it's damn close.

I enjoyed LO specifically because of some of the creature designs and the amazing music. But unfortunately I couldn't slog through it.

How does the environment look... bad?
Sure, character models don't look as good as the CG, but they look better than they've ever looked and are almost exactly the same.

It's going to be moving so fast you won't be able to nitpick anyway.

its ugly. There were times playing through LO when I thought, it looked really bad. Almost like a highresolution xbox game. During the funeral scene and the mercurial tears slowed down the doll like faces I was besides myself in mirth

You are still under the impression that I have an extreme stance on the issue. I don't. Using your own example, you are wearing one bracelet, not three or four or more as some of these characters are. You are wearing a Castro cap, one, not two or three or four. The character design in these games borders on the ridiculous because it goes beyond mere functionality or decoration. It's excessive and unbelievable. They are not well thought out character designs.
I see where you are coming from I don't fully agree or disagree though. Mr. 33cm isn't as bad as say Lightning's outfit. I mean a sleeveless zipper turtle neck, vest, shorts,a and foot tall boots really make her look wonky. God sleeveless turtlenecks (hers is thick as shit) drive me up walls when they aren't layered on top of a long sleeve outfit.

Japanese have a well-documented, culturally ingrained self image problem. It's not racist.

What's not racist? I don't see how you got there. I'm talking about what is generally more appealing to the eyes of the viewer and the artist.

That girl's accessories reminds me of the many rings and beads that I see on certain women in a part of Africa in one of some photoshots I've seen. Too bad I can't find a shot for comparison right now.

Why does everything have to be believable? The clue is in the name - Final Fantasy

I know girls that wear plenty of bracelets like Nom-chan.

The whole arm band thing that Lightning has going on is something I've seen before in real life.

None of the character have multiple hats.

On occasion, I wear an undershirt, dress shirt, sweater top, and dress jacket over it.

Sorry if I'm painting you as an extremist, but these character designs are meant to be slightly fantastical, and the argument of "too many zippers" doesn't really hold water here.

It's called Suspension of Disbelief. Meaning that even if the world is "fantasy" the characters should still make sense in that world.

Yes, I know exactly what you are talking about. I have no problem with character designers taking inspiration from other cultures but if it's not explained well, I have to take issue. :\

I agree that BD is better looking, but I don't think LO is ugly. I just think it's very uneven and feels kind of glue stik'd-together. But yeah, the hair was bad. :D

Yeah, it's such a serious letdown especially when you've got all these games out there were the in-game models are just as pretty as the CG ones.

Not a good thread to have this conversation in. Better to start an OT thread or take it to PM.

Yeah, it will probably look good in motion, so I'll reserve my judgement until then.

Yeah, that's a good way to put it. The game was very messy looking. It looked nice enough at times and really really bad at others. I don't think those designers had a good grasp on UE3 and it shows.

The LO post mortum at GDC08 was eye opening.

Apparently the UE3 methodology is the exact opposite of how all of those veteran designers were used to working.

It's a shame, because parts of the game shone so brightly that it almost was good enough.

Good thing Nom-chan won't have to suffer the stuttery frame rate (MAKE IT HAPPEN SQUARE).

Do you know what CG is? Of course the in-game models will be downgraded. Sounds like you were expecting to play FFXIII with CG graphics.

Completly agree. The visuals in LO were all over the place.

OTOH, Blue Dragon was very tight. Everything was so crisp and clean. That shit was beautiful. Too bad I think LO was the better game.

There are some parts of the game where I thought my 360 was going to explode :lol The end of disk 2 I was like HOLD IT TOGETHER COME ONNNN

The CG videos were supposed to be a close reflection of what the game will look like. That's the point of them.

artwise, I have no issue with FFXIII, looks consistent for square and the artdesign from SE has always been top notch. They fuse technology and fantasy and unlike most other attempts to do so *cough*TOOHUMAN*cough* retain a cohesive, very appealing universe.

WHITE ENGINE FTW?

if you still have something to complain, you should only complain why you are born at this time on this earth at all. Honestly I think this is the best looking thing human can achieve on PS3. SE is my God.

It always gets someone. I wouldn't want to see the disappointment from PS1 CG trailers to in game again.

Good idea. The going is going to look great, so I don't think its the graphics that you or anyone should be concerned about for a game like his.

Man I fear for WKC now... :(

Then again I fricking HATED Rogue Galaxy. I hope they don't fuck WKC up in the gameplay department too.

is there anywhere online to read about this LO post mortem? Sounds like something I'd like to read.

Im not worried about the graphics. I'm more concerned about the small things, like sidequests, mini games, CARD GAME, ultimate weapons, optional bosses, etc. I really dont want this game to be linear.

At least WKC doesn't have horseface, fugly characters. They may look like cartoony but that's better than horse-looking characters.

We're talking design now though. There's just nothing good about that WKC shot.

to be fair, they weren't going for photoreal - its an extension of the art style - more detailed cel shading type look they had in rogue galaxy. That image with the rainbow coloured hair has more to do with anime + cel shading (cartoony aesthetic) than photorealism

There's nothing celshaded about WKC. It just looks like shit. Keep peddling the sinking Level5 ship though, it's funny. :)

then they should keep it more like anime. Now it looks like falling in between anime and photorealism.
