I was able to play through a couple of games in the demo. I also watched the AI play itself just to see how it would do on it's own.
So far, I don't like the new defending system because I am TERRIBLE at it. It's helped me realize how much I crutched on secondary press and homing missile tackles. The AI attackers were passing it from wing to wing if I pressed/jockeyed as designed. As soon as I would go in for a tackle, the attacker would dribble past me. It feels like I need to adjust the "contain" distance to be shorter. But not sure if the online sliders are locked, in which case I might just have to learn at the defaults.
The commentary is really disappointing this year. I can tell some of the clips were lifted straight from FIFA11/FIFA10. The new clips are the ones where the new guy & old guy are talking together, and frankly they aren't "genuine" sounding. I don't know, something is off and I can't tell what it is.
The animations for some reason seem... clunkier? The player models have more detail and look better than 11, but they just seem to run clunkier. This could be a placebo effect.
The good things are that goals now seem unique. I actually had a header from David Villa that hit the bar, bounced inside the goal and then spun back out (like the Lampard shot against Germany). I've never had the ball do that on a header in a year of playing 11. I did have 1 memorable instance of the Lampard shot in 11, so it's not like it never happened either.
The build up play seems more genuine, attackers don't/can't just rush past the center of the pitch and score, you have to play it around the wings now.
I'll have to play some more games to get the feel of it obviously, and I can't wait for career mode. While it isn't completely terrible, I am not as excited for Day 1 as I was before. The only thing keeping me from pulling my pre-order is the fact that Amazon.com has the $20 coupon and the fathead extra.
Does anyone remember if FIFA11 went lower than $40 USD during the thanksgiving sale last year? I might think about that instead.
