FIFA 12 - Previews, Updates, Impressions, et cetera

I agree that it feels like a completely new game, I played match after match today and my interest never feigned. I like how skill moves work against the AI this time it's made playing on the higher difficulties much more fun. The gap between the 4 - 5 star teams seems to have narrowed which was the thing I was hoping for more than anything.

God I fuckin LOVE the game's deliberate emphasis on possession play. CPU opponents no longer have the tendency to just barge in to steal the ball. Especially when you're performing precision dribbling cos doing so seems to make them contain you within distance to cover passing angle; they know you're not going anywhere with that slow pace. And when they do have the ball, they're more likely to pass backwards or switch play when there are no options up front. That way the CPU opponent will hold onto the ball for long periods of time as it explores ways to get past my defense and on the flipside, it's nice to see them allowing me to do the same cos they're not constantly pressuring me all the time (playing on World Class btw).

So far, I don't feel like I'm going to get totally bummed by Speed Merchant Player down the flanks, which I'm thankful for. Hate that in football games where they'll just hammer the wings and pass it into the 6 yard box for a tap in.

Anyone seen the (edit) net tension setting in Visuals? I set it to loose yet it doesn't seem any looser than the default setting in FIFA 11 (PC) or previous FIFA games like 09.

Edit: Wtf I wrote dirt instead of net, what the hell was I thinking?

I'm worried about people abusing the dribble-around-in-little-circles-with-90-rated-players-and-wait-for-an-oppurtunity-to-hit-a-noskill-auto-through-ball-tactic being extremely annoying in FIFA 12 with the tactical defending. It's so boring to defend against and it's even less realistic than the ping-pong fest and ridiculous lobbed through balls of previous editions.

Indirect one-touch short-passing with cute lay-offs and manual through balls and stuff seems very difficult to pull off consistently in this demo. It's how I played in FIFA 11 and it was hopelessly ineffective but it felt great nonetheless. Feels like it has fallen victim to them trying to stop ping-pong passing.

I was able to play through a couple of games in the demo. I also watched the AI play itself just to see how it would do on it's own.

So far, I don't like the new defending system because I am TERRIBLE at it. It's helped me realize how much I crutched on secondary press and homing missile tackles. The AI attackers were passing it from wing to wing if I pressed/jockeyed as designed. As soon as I would go in for a tackle, the attacker would dribble past me. It feels like I need to adjust the "contain" distance to be shorter. But not sure if the online sliders are locked, in which case I might just have to learn at the defaults.

The commentary is really disappointing this year. I can tell some of the clips were lifted straight from FIFA11/FIFA10. The new clips are the ones where the new guy & old guy are talking together, and frankly they aren't "genuine" sounding. I don't know, something is off and I can't tell what it is.

The animations for some reason seem... clunkier? The player models have more detail and look better than 11, but they just seem to run clunkier. This could be a placebo effect.

The good things are that goals now seem unique. I actually had a header from David Villa that hit the bar, bounced inside the goal and then spun back out (like the Lampard shot against Germany). I've never had the ball do that on a header in a year of playing 11. I did have 1 memorable instance of the Lampard shot in 11, so it's not like it never happened either.

The build up play seems more genuine, attackers don't/can't just rush past the center of the pitch and score, you have to play it around the wings now.

I'll have to play some more games to get the feel of it obviously, and I can't wait for career mode. While it isn't completely terrible, I am not as excited for Day 1 as I was before. The only thing keeping me from pulling my pre-order is the fact that Amazon.com has the $20 coupon and the fathead extra.

Does anyone remember if FIFA11 went lower than $40 USD during the thanksgiving sale last year? I might think about that instead.
Best Buy usually has Madden/FIFA for $35 on Black Friday.

I like to make the AI track or "contain" the player on the ball which leaves me to intercept through-balls. You can also hold A to contain, use left stick to contain close up and when you see them turn or go to kick press tackle. This will cause your guy to tug them or stick a leg out which should go some way to blocking a pass or tackling the ball. There's a reason Premiership teams can play someone like York City and not just have their star player turn in a circle and do a pinpoint through-ball everytime. They''l only be able to do it if the other person makes a mistake or isn't defending very well.

I was doing one touch passing just fine. It's possible to do something like this given the right circumstances:

passoktb.gif

But I think in most games you'll have in the demo your players won't be so tightly packed.

If you wanted to you could go through that move with a fine tooth comb and map each action to a FIFA move, both for defence and attack. You can clearly see at one point two guys end up chasing the ball and before that one guy mistimes a lunge and the ball is gone.

FIFA 12's best new feature? midfield
On legendary I always would play pass-pass football and this is the most welcome feature. AI that actually has threat analysis.

Finally got my demo to finish downloading. First impressions (coming straight from FIFA 10, so expecting two year's worth of improvements):

Don't like seeing Rooney at the start again
Like the responsive menus
Don't like the recycled commentary (some of it from FIFA09, FFS..!)
Don't like Alan Smith, he's a boring fucker
Like the player models in the kit selection
Like the spinning EA disc that wipes the screen
Don't like the way players are STILL confused by bouncing balls
Don't like the recycled cut-scene animations
Like the weight to shots
Like the look of the impact engine from first impressions
Don't like the same dumb team-mate AI
Like the quick throw-ins
Don't like the 30fps replays and 15fps cut-scenes

Can't really comment on the gameplay yet as I've only played one game, but the tackling is going to take some getting used to. Anything is an improvement over the old homing missiles, though.

Overall, I think I was expecting to see much bigger improvements over FIFA10. But improvements are definitely evident in some areas. Need to play the demo more to decide if it's day one or just one day.

Some great impressions the last page or so. Looking forward to downloading the demo when I get home... hopefully it will be on PSN by then!

how does precision dribbling work, i cant figure it out.

loving the demo though.
On Xbox, hold LB (guessing L1 on PS3?). Your dude will now hold the ball close to him. You can move the stick around to spin/move him. That's it.

LT is the pass modifier.

(all of this is from memory, could be wrong. just go into controls during a match, it'll show you).

So about that PC demo time unlock...
It's posted in this thread a few pages back. It will show to be locked at 3 minutes, but will really be 6 minutes.

wtf is going on with the penalties in this game?

I think every one I took ended up in the car park

Weird, I got into a shootout and made all of mine through my entire rotation, including the keeper. It's the same system as in 11.

Is the demo not on Origin?
No idea. But that Gamershell link I posted above is moving quicker than the download from EA's servers. Still going to take a good while though it seems.

I'm finding it much easier to score than I was expecting. I raced into a 2-0 lead with my first two attacks as Dortmund against Marseille.

Enjoying the game but it just feels like FIFA to me. Nothing drastically different for better or worse in my opinion. I suspect the subtle differences will come out in time, and as always my long term enjoyment with the game will depend on Career Mode.

Anyone else getting weird stuttering in the PC version? Fraps says the game is running at 60fps but it looks more like 20fps with the stutter.

running on HD 5750.
