FIFA 12 - Previews, Updates, Impressions, et cetera

Ushojax

Should probably not trust the 7-11 security cameras quite so much
I will wait and see what the player likenesses are like before I buy. They have been atrocious for some time. Not a single Spurs player looks right, they all look like lookalikes who've had their faces smashed with a trowel to varying degrees.

Played a couple of matches on FIFA 12 today. Didn't play the CPU so can't comment on defensive AI. But I do like the new defending system; just tough to re-wire your brain to use the LT (on 360) to shadow people.

i dont like fifa very much, especially because of that ridiculous easy to play defense.
played fifa12 at GC on wednesday and thought "oh wow... they really changed it. seems to be a new game" dont know if i like it or not, you cant make up an opinion after a few matches.

but after another match i checked the settings and sadly found "defense - classic mode"... as soon as i chose classic it was the same old shit again :(

I think that LT is used for jockey position. You need to hold A to shadow people iirc.

PC version sounded great in that hands-on:

The game not only looked stunning and sharp, but it ran extremely well. I was completely shocked, mainly due previous rubbish that has been shoved under our noses. After a thoroughly enjoyable first match, we eagerly booted up another, once again flabbergasted by the none existent loading times. At this point people who went off to play the console versions had come over to have a look, and were just as amazed as us about how much better the PC version looked and how well it ran.

I always loved this. Loadings were 3 seconds in FIFA11 to be honest anyway. In one of those videos the guy was in the arena but the video was named 'team x vs team y' and I was like 'wtf but why is he STILL in the aren after 20 seconds?' Then realized it was loading and that the console versions take longer ._.

The loading is masked in a fantastic way, much better than a static screen, you can play while you wait to play. Just one of the great ideas this game has.

You want higher? He'll get much higher in career mode. Online, I'll play Aguero on his spot anyway.
Much lower. He admitted himself he was shit last season, yet EA gives him an 82 because City have a deal with them.

We all know Balotelli is a world class talent, who lacks work rate.

"Deal". City's ratings are low. Lescott 80? Deserves 82-83 imo. Richards 78, actually WORSE than Fifa 11? This is the defense that got most clean sheets last season. Tevez 88, Villa 91? I don't think City's ratings are unfair. Which other ratings did you think was too high?

Live Q&A with PC gameplay.
Liking the new pre-match highlights and the kit selection with player models. Not sure why EA made such a big deal about using actual professional players for mo-cap when the game looks almost exactly the same... there are some new great-looking animations though, but very few.
On the other hand, trapping and dribbling actually looks realistic this year, so...

The new online stuff sounds fantastic. Sounds like there's going to be a genuine deterrent for rage quitters with the league based system.

Also gives the online mode abit of meat rather than just a procession of single, individual matches.

Oh, and +1 for joy at the PC version. Really, really excited for FIFA this year, and that's coming off a year where I genuinely enjoyed PES more last year.

Already better than that Borderlands 2 live stream.

Is there a statement somewhere where they say the PC version is the exact same as the 360 version feature wise? I know they upgraded the graphics to match instead of being one year behind, but what about the other stuff like career mode? I currently have a pre-order for the 360 version, but want to know if I should switch to PC.

Plenty of statements. They keep mentioning it in the stream even... it's the exact same game. Albeit better depending on your rig.

Yes, it is, they asked about it multiple time during the stream, feature wise it's the same and the only difference are graphics options and Origin.
EDIT: beaten :/

Ok, I'm listening to the stream now and that seems to be the case. He did mention something about the PS3 having some kind of exclusive world cup mode? I couldn't hear him properly even after rewinding.

I guess I have to ask myself if I'm ready to swallow the bitter Origin pill for lower load times in FIFA. And I was so ready to fall on that sword for BF3.. but FIFA too -- ugh =(

Can't wait to play the shit out of the demo for 2 weeks before the game comes out.

I never thought I'd be the type of person to buy a sports game every year but here I am for the 5th straight year.

Edit: Still disappointed that Mexes is on the Italian cover. I wish they would have used an established Milan player.

What's wrong with that? The opposing team's players are outside the circle so it's all good.

More details on Pro Clubs (tweaks):

  • New and edited VP accomplishments. Eg, mids can now earn some defensive accomplishments.
  • Club invites/requests appear on main menu (not lost in player hub).
  • Friends Records has a dedicated screen.
  • More player stats in Clubs for mids/defenders.
  • New My Pro menu in clubs for easy access to editing pro and viewing accomplishments.
  • Top speed for small pros has been dialled back a touch.
  • Added some long term, tough-to-get VP accomplishments for the hardcore fans out there.
  • Tuned unlocks so that the cooler items are obtainable by better players (shoes, gear, etc.)
  • Tuned some of the accomplishments, and added a few new ones around lay-off passes.
  • Better reskinned hub screen. Bigger area.
  • Tuned matchmaking to prevent games between clubs too far apart.

AI patterns still look the same. All teams place identical, really. The biggest problem I have with the game. The teams and players in PES have much better individuality.

Btw, have they added a manual-only lobby for online?

This is a huge problem for me, there's barely any individuality between players and teams.

EA have had this problem for ages now. Annoying they continue to ignore it!
Doubt 90% of the 12 year olds who buy this game really care, and they matter more than us.

Biggest PES/Winning eleven fanboy here.......I'm getting Fifa 12 this year for sure. Looks so much better than Konami's effort yet again. They need to take a year off and rebuild the game from scratch.

Definitely doesn't look that way to me... on Legendary (or whatever the heck the actual difficulty is cos I'm also hearing it doesn't go that high in the Gamescom public demo), you see far more instances of the CPU dribbling back or switching play when there are no forward options available, compared to FIFA11 where they'd desperately keep on pushing forward and performing rugby-style diagonal passes to get past your defense, not to mention relying on those McGeady spins outside the box. Even on Professional, players are making decoy runs and creating space (1:26), so I'm not too worried about the lack of improvements in the AI, at least in offense. Defense-wise though, I see better man marking and general positioning, with players covering in gaps in all of the Gamescom videos, so there's some hope there...

Community manager, EA_Yasha, has outlined the improvements/tweaks they've done to ensure stability, better matchmaking in OTP/Pro Clubs this year:http://forum.ea.com/uk/posts/list/933577.page

So here’s a few bullet points to explain what we’ve been working on:
  • Testing, testing, and more testing. We’ve done much more testing in other regions of the world, using differing connection strengths. In particular, we’ve had groups continuously working on that in Argentina, the UK, and obviously here in Vancouver. We’ve also done a lot more wireless specific testing, brought in better load testing for our servers and kicked off early pre-launch testing on our final, live servers.
  • Better tools: We’ve now got much better tools to help us debug issues in both gameplay and online code. One problem that can occur with gameplay (rather than online code) is the dreaded desync. This is where a very specific event in an online match somehow becomes interpreted differently by different people’s local games. When this happens, a disconnection will occur. It’s a complicated thing and affects any game with online modes, but when it happens in Clubs we know it can be very frustrating. We’ve spent a lot of time using our new, improved tools to unearth these gremlins and sort as many of them out as we possibly can for FIFA 12.
  • Better matchmaking: A lot of the problems people have experienced with FIFA 11 comes down to people being inappropriately matched for games. FIFA 12 will include improved matchmaking to prevent less than ideal matchups. Additionally, we have moved authentication and matchmaking servers (what we call ‘central’ servers) to Europe now, which will mean logging in and navigating online screens should be much snappier for most people.

Fulham are now partners too? LOL. This is starting to remind me of when EA bought the NFL license. And that's not good.

Man, I love how Amazon has made my FIFA 12 purchase drop to virtually $19.90...

This week I traded-in my FIFA 11 copy, for $24.30... "plus" the $20 pre-order bonus.... it definitely has made sense to buy it from them.

Did you play the PES12 demo, it's exceptional for a preview build.

You may or may not know, but a GAF member is directly responsible for about 50% of those.

I suppose you're talking of QVT? I know there's a couple of Game Changer members in other fifa forums and they've been pretty valuable at providing detailed impressions of early builds that they get access to.

I skipped 11. Might be picking this up. Haven't followed any info at all.

Any info on online league implementation or online franchise mode?

Also, I need to start spamming EA everyday to allow online spectator mode

Spectator mode would be ace, but wouldnt that hammer down servers pretty much? I can imagine a lot of tournaments with quite a few viewers.

And I skipped 11 too. Totally picking up 12.

I'd bank on it only coming to DD in the US. That's what they did with last years game.
