Ohh Shit!

What the fuck happened? I turn my TV off at 115th minute
to go watch Transformers 3
with Brazil winning 2-1 and I come back and see U.S. advanced on PK's. Shit!

Damn You, Michael Bay and your CGI-filled 2.5 hour action porno!

P.S. Hope Solo is too beautiful to be playing football. She needs to be a model.

Brazil totally failed to close out the match. Tried the let's take a dive to run off time approach, ended up adding 3 minutes to the game, leading to this

Megan Rapinoe, Abby Wambach goal

I've been to Qatar (twice) and if they play that world cup outside, its going to be totally stupid. I was there in 06 for a deployment and when we landed at 7:00am, it was already 107 degrees with 100% humidity. Not to mention the sun is bright as shit there.

Yeah I was talking about the olympics. the 2022 WC is almost assuredly going to be a clusterfuck though.

Indeed. I've seen World Cup games that are loud but I don't think I've ever watched one that loud. Had to have been amazing to be there.

Do any Americans here actually call it football? The 'soccer' thing feels so alien

There are videos of the foundations of stadia actually cracking and swivelling during games because of the fans jumping up and down

This video is amazing as well. Crowd control

Now hopefully we don't pull what the men's team pulled the game after their huge win last year.
this. I think France had 30+ shots against England so it's not going to be easy at all.

I call it football.

But I'm probably a lot more into it than most of my fellow countrymen. Plus, calling it soccer is a lot easier than having to say European Football when trying to avoid confusing it with American Football.

True, but with TV I noticed they find other ways (ads on sides to stadium highlighted, score overlays post ads) that seem to work. Funny thing is the WNBA started doing ads on unis too, although I can't see the NBA or MLB EVER doing that.

Of late, yeah. But I've heard that line in so many fledgling sports and teams I'm skeptical of that. I need to see 3-4 years of success/growth, and considering where the MLS is coming from it's not that hard to go up. As long as the don't start throwing expansion teams everywhere they should keep growing. How much will they grow depends on them.

Also let's not bring NBA/NHL average attendance when seating conditions are radically different. An NFL comparison is much more fair.

What do you mean by "seating conditions?" Most MLS teams don't play in cavernous NFL stadiums anymore... most are in 20k-ish SSS that they usually do a decent job filling. And comparing to far and away the most popular sporting league- that plays less than half the games that MLS does- isn't really a fair comparison, in my opinion.

Of greater importance is that thereare about 17 MLS home games a year but 41 in an NHL or NBA season, IIRC. MLS is still getting creamed on a total attendance metric, but it's a great milestone nevertheless.

Could be. I've never been a huge soccer fan but I was fucking glued to my TV during last year's Men World's Cup and I was glued to this match as well. I think actually having a team to root for is a huge part of it.

I'm watching the USA/China replay on EPSN and it's fucking LOUD in that stadium. It's crazy.

Find yourself an MLS team to follow!

Oh boy, you've opened up a can of worms.

For the most part, people think that those referring to it as "football" is a kind of pretentious eurosnobbery. For myself, I think it sounds awkward when I refer to foreign stuff as "soccer," so I'll usually stick to phrases like "American Soccer," but I'll also say stuff like, "England has the best football league in the world."

Wow.

So, these guys are basically the Euro soccer equivalent of the Aggie cult that follows Texas A&M University football around here?

If NFL had some crowds like the first video it would be hard for the visiting team, and many football stadiums usually are half the capacity of an NFL stadium....

Why is it in the normal sports I watch there is never ever this much controversy over calls that easily help decide matches as when I try and watch soccer?

I like the sport and all (especially to actually play), but I swear watching American Football, Bastketball, Baseball, Tennis etc... seems like it's a big rarity when the refs/umps help decide a game outcome. Yet I think everytime I try and watch a major soccer tourny there end up being multiple games decided by calls such as this. It's the ONLY sport I watch like this too, and quite frankly makes the sport semi unwatchable because of it.

PS: This is all irregardless of which way the call goes.

Greyface said:
the soccer governing body is corrupt and don't care to spend money on technological solutions. it's extremely annoying and I'm getting turned off enough to stop watching the damn sport.

Sounds like baseball to me actually... still annoying as fuck irregardless of who won today... frustrates the shit out of me whenever I try to get into the sport....

Why do all these Brazilian women soccer players look like malnourished 16 year old Mexican boys? Totally ruining the hot Brazil stererotype.

Better than the North Korean team, which probably WAS malnourished 16 year old boys.

IRL, I'll call it whatever will be unambiguous to the audience I'm talking to.

Online, I'll call it whatever will be unambiguous. That usually means using the term the British coined to refer to the sport unambiguously.

For the record though, if I ever win the lottery and form my own soccer team, I'll call it (Whatever) Association Football Club.

Never done a tour there myself, can only imagine. The stadium concepts look amazing, though:

Also, check out this MADNESS:

Basically, because of the heat, the game would be in 3 30-minute periods. Also, ad revenue.

Aside from that, still smiling everything I think about our match today :D

just caught the replays of this game on espn. fuck. go ladies. our goalie is hot. my only point of debate: they put this up as the #5 most dramatic american sports moment ever, up with a bunch of baseball and a couple nfl plays. and no jordan. "sorry mj, you've been upstaged by some women with really short hair and big thighs.". ?!?!?!

is it uncool of me to inquire about the sexuality of the two female soccer players i saw interviewed on espn tonight? cuz they kept looking at eachother like "goddamnit I AM IN LOVE WITH YOU, I CANT WAIT UNTIL THIS INTERVIEW IS OVER SO WE CAN RIP THESE SHIRTS OFF AND DO IT.". just curious.

Was on media black out till I got to watch the recording (was on at 2am here than had to work).

I actually jumped out of my seat when Wambach (god what a name) scored. Watching those Brazillian girls in their self-righteous glory was seriously pissing me off, especially Marta carrying on like it was the end of the world when a call didn't go her or Brazils way, then acting like they did nothing wrong when fouling another player. The men's game is riddled with that shit, the womens game, thankfully is not, though Brazil certainly turned on the tantrums and dummy spits and resorted to the old 'oh god I'm dying' tactic to waste time at the end. That was an absolutely disgusting display of poor sportsmanship and the reason I could never support such a team winning.

Good on the girls from the US, fought hard and deserved the win.

Damn oil money.
But that stadium surrounded by water looks pretty badass

The water around Doha was probably some of the most beautiful water I've ever seen.

Its got that nice light blue color to it.

And it Qatar's case, its not just oil, its natural gas as well. I believe they're sitting on one of the largest natural gas deposits in the world.

Doha really is a beautiful city.

but those crowd shots did look good, didnt think you guys had it in you :p

College football is on a whole other level then the NFL. With the NFL, its just people playing for money.

At the college level, its your peers, your classmates. There's a lot of school spirit and you see it come out on Saturdays.

Even after people graduate from college (or leave early to go pro), you still see or hear them refer back to their college.
