Did they ever get GGPO in Unity to work? I know it was in the works but not there yet. I gotta thing in the works that could use it.
Is this because lack of access to Unity's source code?! Otherwise, there shouldn't be a problem, the way SG works is pretty similar to how Unity handle 2D stuff.

Edit: sorry for the double post.

I ended up turning off the stream last night. It was outright embarrassing how awful it was between the tweets, Zhi, and all the other foolery going on. The fact it represented Capcom as an official event is really a shame. If they're just going to fully embrace Kappa and go down this route from now on, I probably will just start avoiding whatever it is they want to do. Good play and tournaments, but it's not worth putting up with that just to see.

This pretty much support my point, when a company have the money for it they want to use their own code instead of licensing another. KI team brought the guy behind GGPO to help them write a netcode instead of just licensing GGPO, no way this would have been cheaper than licensing GGPO!

Price isn't the issue, neither is the language. Yatagarasu is made by like 3 Japanese guys(ex SNK/Capcom devs!) and they had no problem working with GGPO, you think Capcom/Namco(who already made a game with GGPO)/ASW avoid it due to language barrier? That's just ridiculous.

And using GGPO in the games IG made for Capcom still had to get approval from Capcom, so we know that they have nothing against using GGPO. GGPO success is probably the reason they're moving to roll back netcodes.
An isolated case with yata doesn't enforce that it's commonly feasible for Japanese devs to use something that doesn't have Japanese support.

Iron Galaxy speak English so it's easier to work with, the issues that a Japanese team at Capcom would run in to with language issues don't really apply to them so I'm sure approval was easier to get.

Ok, lets assume no one in Capcom netcode dev team read English and finding someone who can help them with it is impossible, what was the excuse for Namco-Bandai who already have a team that worked on GGPO, why are they making their own rollback netcode now instead of just licensing GGPO?

Also, isolated case is a bit reaching, GGPO as whole had about six clients(according to that wiki link), 2 of them being Japanese devs is pretty hard to count as "isolated cases".

If GGPO isn't approved middleware for use on the PS4 and XBone, that by itself would be enough to get most multi-platform developers to not use it.

I didn't see any of the later parts of last night's tournament but if its just Zhi being Zhi, this has been going on forever. If MadCatz had a problem with his commentary, they would have done something by now. They're probably just gonna let it rock.

I'm more talking about everything on that stream as a whole and what Tough Cookie and SGFighter are doing.

Put me in the camp that much preferred Nine States over the sterile SXSW stream

TBF I don't like the SXSW stream either. Just because we don't want muted streams with long ass boring breaks, doesn't mean we have to go the complete opposite end of the spectrum and put on clown shoes.

Up until last night, I always felt like I was the only person that found Zhi to just be an extremely jarring personality to listen to. Really had nothing to do with kappa, though.

The source code wasn't the reason I had heard, but it could have been related. I haven't kept up. Last I heard it was because Unity was in C# and GGPO was setup in C + which has enough differences in its stuff that it was requiring rewrites of code. I'm no expert though on this subject, but its what I was told last time I was looking into it.

Just curious if they overcame the hurdles yet and had GGPO up and running yet in Unity.

At the time people are allowed to voice their displeasure with something on a discussion forum which invites such.

am i a terrible person for enjoying most of the non-gameplay aspect of the nine states tournament? i thought most of zhi + infiltration commentary was ace. it has a nice balance between gameplay commentary and banter. i also found the tweets to be hilarious most of the time. it was really chill stream where everyone was just goofing around and not taking everything seriously as at the end of the day, we're just watching people playing video games. having said that, i really hate how zhi handled thing during the grand final.

I thought Zhi was hilarious and the stream was great last night but I can see the argument that they needed to up the "professionalism" because it is a pro tour event.

Pretty much my thoughts but what happened during the grand finals?

I fell asleep sometime around Zhi bringing up StarmieG and Papafiltration.

Ditto for sharing opinions about other peoples opinions.

You wasn't really doing that with that posts however. Doing so would have resembled something like "I disagree with you Anne because blah blah blah". You actually literally questioned the very basis of which opinions are form and dismissed the discussion because it's "dudes playing vidyas who cares".

Anyways, I don't care. I just thought Zhi jumped the shark with his commentary. But hey do you.

More or less, if you don't have SC access it's a pain because you don't have total control over when the engine updates/renders(by design), and you kinda need that.

Rollback has been implemented in at least one other Unity game so it's not impossible. Maybe there's been more progress on the GGPO front, since it's been almost a year since I looked into it.

Edit: I think there was also some issue with serialization of gamestates in Unity, though IIRC that's less of a hurdle and more of a 'need to write a custom solution' thing.

I always enjoy Zhi's commentary. The 9 states tournament was no exception. The only thing inappropriate were the tweets that cameraman allowed on stream. I still found them entertaining though, but I understand how someone could find the tweet portion of the stream troublesome.

Cameraman should have let the Japanese commentate for some part of the tournament. It's a Japanese tournament and the Japanese viewers weren't catered to at all. That's about the only complaint I have.

Zhi gives 0 fucks and I love it. Had a blast with what I watched of the stream last night (especially the Zhi/Infiltration duo).

Loved the tweets, too. Ranged from creepy to hilarious. A few of them slayed me every single time.

Weren't the tweets all cosplay and photoshops of FGC guys' heads on random pictures? I went to sleep pretty early in the tournament but that's all I remember. Was the cosplay the problem or did the tweets change to something else later in the tournament?

The stream was getting pretty bleh when I went to bed last night, seems like it just went from there. I don't have a problem with it if the stream was just having fun or a random weekly event. But it's a Ranking event where folks are getting points for the big show this year. At least keep some of it in check.

the way they presented it just did not come off as a ranking event imo and it was extremely hard for me to care about any match that wasn't poongko.

I don't like Zhi as a person but as a commentator, I think he is abysmal. He has a place and as a personality, he is better in that type of role. It seemed like the goal of the commentary was to entertain which is good but if you overshadow the tournament that is happening, why should I care about the tournament?

That Nine States stream was pretty pathetic and lame. WWE-level humor and catering to a lowbrow crowd.

It's not what I want out of a stream. Some guys can be funny without being stupid- Zhi isn't one of them. Neither is Aris IMO. Those two are pretty much turn off the stream for me.

Shidosha is what I'd consider a funny guy who doesn't get stupid, as one example of someone who can do it right. Valle these days is another- though he can get a little cheesy/hokey.

I fell asleep sometime around Zhi bringing up StarmieG and Papafiltration.

Instead of commentating the GFs he just went on and on about how the situation was awkward because two Koreans were playing and they were going FT5 and the Japanese were angry because they wanted to go home, then he started calling Poongko autistic with 4chan-level asperger jokes.

I turned off the stream, too. Got to be rather annoying. Not enough focus on the technical aspects of the matches to counterbalance the streaming hi-jinks. SXSW commentary, while a little dry, is more my preference when it comes to tournaments and high level play.

I love Spooky's streams, particularly when he's paired with someone really knowledgeable about the game. Strikes a pretty good balance between entertainment and information.

A lot of folks always catered to the stream monsters so it's nothing new. If sponsors don't like it and they watched it, they could tell him to tone it down themselves. Until then, just watch streams for whatever reasons you have. I don't like everything I see in streams but I can see others do and vice versa. Everything in stride.

DB won? What? That's so out of the blue. Every time I see DBkoopa I think of IPW for some reason.

Mike Z reached out to Umezono to talk about GGPO for Yata when people backing it were asking about it for Yata. FGC networking is how that came about. How else do you think they settled on Indie Gogo for their crowdfunding.
