Final Fantasy III announced for Steam - $15.99/€12.99/£10.99

I think that most games today tend to overestimate the system requirements.

It's also possible that games aren't coded as well as they could be, because computers are so powerful now, that they feel they don't need to.

I tend to not think that system requirements are very true most of the time.

Doesn't this sort of(probably should use sort in the same sentence but)gurantee games like FFIX and the remaster of X? Possibly even XII?

It doesn't guarantee Final Fantasy IX, but I do think that it makes it more likely.

I'd personally really like to see Final Fantasy IX on Steam, since it's my favourite Final Fantasy game.

This is probably happening because Square Enix already has the iOS assets which are already optimized to run in HD (in retina resolution which is actually higher than 1080p). This nearly guarantees at least the iOS port of FFIV.

Potentially this also puts every Square Enix iOS port on the table, at least the ones with retina graphics (which I think is all or almost all of them). I can only hope that eventually means Tactics.

Oh boy, now I can get Final Fantasy III, VII, VIII, XI and XIV on Steam!

(it seems like an absurdly strange collection if you don't know the context of each game and its port)

What will be next. FFIV PSP or Tactics. Glas to see SE getting on the Pc Port oat. Hopefully I can replay FFIX one day.

I'll buy this, even if just to send SE the message to put the next games with III in the title (XIII/XIII-2/LR) on Steam too.

Maybe this version can be modded to be better more easily than the others. Fingers crossed. Otherwise I'll continue to stick to the Famicom version.

That would be huge for me. Customized jobs, battle systems and better character models would be delicious. I wouldn't be surprised if people modded in a Bravely Default-like battle system in this game if it was possible. Really, though, balance mods are needed as a lot of jobs in this game are garbage from the get-go and never get better. Also, dual-wielding makes any other melee configuration almost useless.

Man they really should convert some of those low-res 2d background sprites into 3d objects. The texture res actually looks good low on the character models, kind of cool endearing low-poly style. But those 2d objects stick out like a sore thumb. For this price they could have done a little better on "enhancing" the art for PC.

Good game, but the final boss is one of the worst I've ever played. You have to fight 5 or so bosses in a row, without being able to rest or save. And if you died you would have to start all over again from the bottom of the last dungeon.

I bet square is really glad they decided to remake this for DS instead of PS2 like they were thinking about. I wonder how much money they have gotten from the PSP, Ouya, IOS, Kindle, Windows Phone, and Android ports.

With this release, I'm pretty sure III is now the third most accessible game in the series, after the first one and IV. Who would have thought that 10 years ago when you could only play fan translations?

Eh...a lot of the jobs are fairly balanced, give or take a few obvious ones.
Compared to the original game, it's a helluva lot better.

And yeah, Dual-Wielding's typically the way to go since Shields are situational at best on a typical playthrough (or you use the almighty 2x Shield Provoking Viking).

Challenges are meant to be hard, no?

Besides, the game was remade to be more difficult.
It's only fair to keep the Final Boss Rush in tact.
(Also, I don't know if you actually knew this, but the game throws you a bone in refilling your HP/MP after every one of those boss fights.)

Maybe if they upped the number of enemies in battle to the same number you see in the NES version some people would double-dip...

Wouldn't that require a complete overhaul of the system since the DS/PSP ver. was designed and adjusted for your 4 characters to battle with only a set number of enemies?

Yes it would.

All enemies were rebalanced with this in mind.

On top of which, I think the battle system's max number of targets is likely limited to 4 (although 3 is the normal number you mostly face outside of like one fight).

To do multiple enemies a la the original would require a complete remake of the battle system.

I don't understand why they feel the need to release this game over and over?

Cheap port. Probably still sells well. Don't see the harm in putting older games on as many platforms as possible though. It's a good, low cost way to maximise their revenue.

I would love if they tossed in the Famicom version as an unlockable or something. Then I would totally dip again.

Well, if it is like the PSP release it will give you the option of being able to switch between the famicom soundtrack and the DS soundtrack on the options menu. Not what you wanted as listening to it it would probably make you wish you were playing the famicom version.

I really can't wait for FF IV Steam Edition, I liked IV a lot more than III (both story and gameplay, didn't really enjoy FFIII jobs system a lot).

Well... I'm pretty confident that FFXV will be on PC after all. That was one of the only reasos for me to even pick up a PS4.... that and Guilty Gear.

Will this run in native 1080p? :(

I would imagine downsampling and forcing AF through drivers will make the game look quite good.

I'm confident in FFXV showing up on PC as well, best case scenario would be day one with the console versions.

Yeah, that won't help matters :P

FFT with mouse controls would be amazing, yea I expect too much.
Well, there are always mods.

It seems like Square Enix often releases these ports imperfect and then people make mods for it and then also complain to Square Enix. And then Square Enix patches it which is nice.

Maybe that could happen.

Final Fantasy Tactics is another game I would also really like. I think that Final Fantasy IX, Final Fantasy IV, and Final Fantasy Tactics are my favourite Final Fantasy games. So it would be great to have them on Steam.

I get the feeling that we're getting these ports though because they were developed on Unity and we're getting mobile versions of games that are being ported for the PC. I know a lot of people here don't like mobile but I think it's really nice and helpful for the PC getting more games.

I think that means we'll get Final Fantasy IV on Steam next and maybe some other mobile ports like Chaos Rings. And I think that Square Enix really like Unity now so we'll end up getting a lot more games on mobile and Steam. And hopefully we'll get new games on Steam like Final Fantasy XV and Kingdom Hearts 3 on Steam as well.

But I get the feeling that we won't get Final Fantasy IX on Steam until it's ported to mobile with Unity. Or Final Fantasy Tactics or other games that aren't on Unity either. But I do think that they're going to port Final Fantasy VII to mobile soon so it will happen eventually. And I think that a lot of people will be upset when they do. :/

There's a difference between hard & unfair. I spent 6 hours of non-stop grinding on the final dungeon & still didn't get close to beating the final boss, thus those 6 hours were lost. Precisely how many hours am I expected to grind for without the option of saving?

man one thing I really like about Square is how they try to release their games on as many platforms as possible. I am really enjoying ff4 on android at the moment. Hope this means more PC ports are in the future.

Ill have to see the difference between FF3 on PC and see if it's worth getting over the mobile version. Did they add anything else not see on the iOS/Android version of the game?

Ugh... I fucking hate those games... But I would buy at least one to reward them for bringing the franchise to PC in full force.

Damndest thing is that given the 360 ports of those games, making a semi competant PC port shouldn't be that difficult.

The current tally for mainline SP FF games ported to the PC remains at 3 (FFVII, FFVIII and this one.). 5, if you include the online ones, of course. (FFXI and FFXIV/ARR)

Why they didn't continue with it after VIII remains a mystery. The uptake couldn't have been that poor, and they had Eidos Interactive doing it each time.

YES! YES! YES! :O

Two great announcements in the same week (the other being Pokemon 3rd gen remakes).

I'll be getting this on Steam for sure (when it is on sale, that price tag is tad too high).

Anyways, hopefully this will lead to more titles being ported over. Although I am surprised that FFI and FII Anniversaries didnt make the cut before FFIII. Hopefully we will see both of those titles soon in the future alongside FFTactics War of the Lions.

This way I wont have to buy them again on a tablet/phone :P.

Ironically I beat the original FF3 (NES) few months ago.

I don't use my PlayStation 3 very often. I turn it on to play the exclusives I really like, like Tales of Graces f and Tales of Xillia and so forth. Well, I guess it isn't and exclusive since Tales of Graces is also on the Wii but it's kind of close.

If Final Fantasy XIII came out on Steam, I might finish the game. I didn't have enough fun on the PlayStation 3 to finish the game. But I think on Steam since I'm always on the PC I probably would.

Isn't this like Dickens novels that have fallen out of copywright yet? I'm all for options, but are there really any people out there saying "finally! I have a platform to play this 20 year old game on!"

Final Fantasy 4 keeps getting remade because it sells right?

Final Fantasy 4 keeps getting remade because it sells right?
It sells okay, but the original DS remake sold dramatically less than FF3 DS, and it's the reason why we never got an FF5 remake in the same style. The actual reason why FF4 keeps getting versions is because there's people within the company to push for it, specifically Takashi Tokita, the original lead designer.

I don't understand why they feel the need to release this game over and over?
Isn't being multiplatform what most Western companies do? At least, it seems like it's more common for Western companies to make games multiplatform, while for Japanese companies to make games exclusive to one system. And just the same, it seems like many people in the West don't understand why Japanese developers only seem to develop games for a few systems, while so many Western developers develop games for all sorts of systems.

I think I've heard some fans of Western games asking and wondering about why Japanese games seem to only be made for a few systems. I don't know how much more Western developers make games multiplatform, but I have heard some fans of Western games comment that they thought this was true. And it does seem kind of true.

Isn't being multiplatform a good thing? I think that Western developers have the right idea in porting their games to as many platforms as they can. Not only can it reach more people, but it also means more sales. I don't understand when people say that companies like Square Enix are just porting their games to make more money. But is there anything wrong with that? If there are more people who want to buy it because it's on the platform they like, isn't that a good thing?

I don't think there's anything wrong with a company trying to make more money by making their games available on more platforms. I think it's both consumer friendly and makes the developers more money.

Here's the PSP version running through an emulator. Always thought the art scaled up nice

I don't understand why they feel the need to release this game over and over?

If it's to a platform it hasn't been before, I don't see the issue. I wouldn't complain about an old movie being available on every single digital distribution service and type of physical media there was.
