Final Fantasy Versus XIII was announced in 2006. It is now 2012. These are facts.

If the game is basically Kingdom Hearts 1 with a FF style world/characters, that would be pretty awful. All this time and that's the best they could come up with? Lawl.

All these gaps of time in between games tells me that S-E really has no idea what they're doing anymore.

Wat people fail to understand is that it's an RPG, they showed the beginning of the game, you don't have everything at the beginning, combat gets more complex and challenging as enemies become tougher and you get new abilities.

It's not my job to extrapolate information about the game. I will judge based on what's in front of me. If that's not what I should judge it on, then the developers should release something new that is more representative.

Wow, I can't believe 6 years have past. Square needs to step it up because both Final Fantasy XIII and Final Fantasy XIII-2 haven't been blockbusters.

The damage may have already been done. The younger kids are more into WRPG/FPS titles. S-E kind of missed the boat and then some. It's going to be hard for them to bounce back from the missteps of the past six years.

I can't tell if that's from a game or a real person doing cosplay.

Looking at the gameplay it seems very dated even type-0 seem better

This is the first time I've seen this footage, and while I agree that the combat looks primitive here, it's probably early-game stuff. I like that you can switch between characters, but based on that trailer it's difficult to be sure if it's a dynamic feature.

Female Kain has restored my faith and excitement for this title. Here's hoping we get it relatively soon!

XIV is a massive failure as well.

If Versus flops too, it'll basically confirm that FF is no longer a force to be reckoned with. There's a ton of hype surrounding the game, but if it still sells poorly, it'll mean the fanbase is bailing out.

At that point it's all hands on deck for VIIR, if that doesn't do it, then yeah, pretty much fucked.

I was just thinking today that I can't believe I am more excited for other RPGs (Western ones at that) than I am for a Final Fantasy game. This is crazy. The 15 years ago me would slap myself in the face at the thought of looking at a Final Fantasy as saying; "I'd rather play Mass Effect, Tales, Skyrim or Star Ocean than this".

True but I think XIII soured the brand more than SE is willing to admit.
...but XIV is their scapegoat, clearly. lawl

It is a pretty crappy game, but yeah, a lot of people bought XIII but were turned off. No denying that. S-E would rather just focus all the negative energy on XIV for damage control purposes.

XIII-2's sales reflect how let down people were by XIII. It's a shame, too, because the game is so much better.

That's what happens when you make people wait so many years for what was essentially an incomplete game... they won't trust you when you come back the second time and promise that it's all going to be better. And it is, I'm having a lot of fun playing it. Sadly they seemed to have lost the trust and adoration of many fans.

I think that's exactly what's happened.

And as for XIV... it's a shame they've put the blame mostly on that title... while it contributed, I think a lot of non-MMO FF fans didn't really pay attention to it in the first place.

Thanks. So it's Final Fantasy set in real world, modern day Tokyo.

I'm sorry, I don't mean to be a troll and I know nobody asked for my opinion, but I just really hate the direction Final Fantasy is going. This isn't Final Fantasy, this is something completely different that shares the name. I thought XIII was bad but this is just ridiculous (yes I was one of those who bought XIII but will not by XIII-2). Where is the "fantasy"?

And why was the trailer mirrored?

The trailer is mirrored for copyright purposes.

And are you one of those people that think knights and dragons are all "fantasy" is and should ever be?

I've honestly never really gotten this complaint, especially considering that the series changes it up with every installment and that this is far from the first time that the it's taken a "modern" approach (I.E. VIII). >.<

Personally, I think the series being stuck in medieval stasis for over six games was a bit much.

No one complains about the Kingdom Hearts names as far as mainstream goes...same with Dissidia's crazy names, so I doubt Versus or even Versus XIII would even make a difference.

Not too mention EVERY SINGLE OTHER RPG has that medieval aesthetic that was tired 15 years ago and is even more tired today

Final Fantasy always has different settings. Its usually a combination of many different types, usually high fantasy and sci-fi. Versus XIII honestly isnt going to be any more "realistic" than the rest aside from maybe technology that looks a little closer to our level of tech today. And even then, that will just be skyscrapers and cars...maybe guns.

I'm sure we'll still run into giant crystalline areas, strange factories, ancient libraries, some sort of base or area underwater, island with dinosaurs, or something similar.

T.Nomura also confirmed the presence of moguris looking like the Type-0's ones, so there's definitely fantasy in it.

Well not as great in Japan, but no sales data for the rest of the world.

In the end it'll sell around 2ml ww, maybe a little more if it has some legs. I don't think that's bad, and we don't know for sure how much they expected it to sell anyway.

Not too mention the presence and importance of crystals and gods into the narrative.

You see a few buildings and all of a sudden you thinks its going to be GTA.

You know would stop the fanbase from bailing out? FFXII: IZSJS: HD Remix with Matsuno's "director's cut"/story he wanted to make.

Everything after 8 has been disappointing for me in the FF series until XII dropped. And then the whiney Square-Enix fanbase wanted to wallow in shit instead of actually evolving their game. They reap what they sow.

But that Versus 13 trailer that someone posted from IGN actually looks interesting.

This should have come out in 2009 but it's pretty clear square enix has had nothing but trouble attempting to build their own game engine from scratch. I'm guessing they had planned to have the white engine finished in 2007, FFXIII finished in 2008, XIV in 2009 and versus in 2010. Instead it took them an extra year to finish off the white engine, they rushed out a half finished piece of crap with XIV , lost so much money that they had to rush out a XIII-2 with a different studio and now versus has been trapped in development limbo for 5 years. I also think because of all the delays and issues with much of their lineup in the last 5 years, sqaure enix had Versus XIII on the backburner, nomura and a small time were putzing away with it. Now , everything else has made it out. I think Versus will be rebranded Final Fantasy XV, and be announced for release on ps3 in japan late december followed by a north american / euro launch 4 months later in 2013 on BOTH ps3 and 360.

Probably because it has an 83 metacritic score.

How people gave that game a good score I'll never know.

Well, having an amazing battle system helps. Especially if you get into the deep part of it when you reach the Archylte Steppe. :) Also having no towns isn't so bad considering towns are just filler in JRPGs anyway. The only thing you do in JRPG towns is go to shops and then move on with the story. I'll never know why people hate the game so much other than the story being somewhat confusing.

Towns are essential for world building and immersion.

Shouldn't be far off from Japan's numbers, if I were to guess.

I wonder how the 360 version fared. XIII-2 didn't appear in Xbox Live Activity when it was released.

The last truly great FF game was number 10. It went downhill from there. And the way things are going i doubt versus is going to stop the train of mediocrity in it's tracks

Mine are probably Sega and Atlus. Square Enix and Namco Bandai come to a far second.

I felt that Square Enix was much better last gen though.
I think mine are... um... That's a good question. :lol

A lot of the publishers this gen have done things that I don't really like/haven't done things that I would have liked, so I'm not sure...

It's definitely very, very simplistic in what they've shown so far. It's been a concern for me. I really hope they have made it better, because as it is now, it just looks like Kingdom Hearts 1.
Thank you. This is exactly why I'm not on the bandwagon for Versus; though to be fair, I haven't really been invested in it except for when the DK Sigma trailer was released. As the years passed, I just became rather indifferent towards it. As I've said before, I don't really get invested in narrative or cutscenes, but rather how the game plays... and I haven't really seen anything about it that I like yet.

And that video from last January didn't really make me feel confident about the game's attacking system at all... It looks simplistic, not very fluid, and rather boring to me, especially in comparison to other games with similar attacking systems. I can only react to what they put out in front of me, not make assumptions about the rest of the game because that wouldn't be fair at all.

I sincerely hope that people looking forward to this game won't be disappointed by the end product. Not just because the end product might not be good--because we know it'll be polished if it gets released--but because of the hype, expectations, and fanfare surrounding it. I'm afraid people might be expecting too much out of it.

X was the last time it was great, but I have hope Versus will be the next time it's great. Beyond that who knows, it obviously takes way too long, and way too much to build these games, they either need a serious reduction in scope, or they need to move to handhelds, both ways will leave me ambivalent towards the franchise I imagine.

I bet Konami is at the bottom of your list because of what they did to Suikoden. :p
I know Konami is at the bottom of my list.

I have hope that they'll make a successor to Tactics Ogre. Probably a year before Versus hits, so I'd say about...2014-2015.

Although with Matsuno gone...yeah.

Depends on your expectations, I don't think Versus will be GOAT, or the savior of JRPG, just wish whatever vision Nomura and the team had for the game can be presented to their fullest.

Also, 12 is shit.

Square Enix & Sega are my favourite for this generation.

Someone mentioned earlier that they'd love to see the soundtrack more than anything else. I'd like to see that too. Or some form of new media... they really need to change how their business model works when it comes to talking about information for an upcoming game.

It helps being not hyped (and possibly pessimistic) towards big games. I know that it made me think XIII was OK rather than terribad in the end.

Also, 12 is shit.
