Has this game been on Steam for 15 years, with achievements?

No? Then it is not 15 years old. You understand this clearly, but are being deliberately obtuse to cover your idleness, in regards to typing 18 extra characters in a post.

Why?

Then don't worry because people aren't spoiling this game, they're just talking about a 15 year old game in which the exact same things happen to happen.

I'm actually not in favor of spoiling the game but your logic was exceptionally poor in that post.

I'll except that was a poor way to put it, but I did spend about 5 or 6 other posts putting it in a more understandable and logical way, following that.

Did you read them, or did you just feel the need to pick on that one point? :lol

Considering this a thread about the game's release on Steam, and has nothing to do with story or character discussion, I don't see why we can't keep it spoiler free for those who care.

i hate this DRM (Square Enix DRM) wtihin DRM (steam) bullshit.

(why do i need to login to square enix anyway)

Seriously, I'm sure there are people who are still moderately interested in this game, so why ruin the story for them.

Just tasteless.

Exactly.

Five years is the limit on bitching about spoilers in an open discussion about cultural and entertainment works. If you haven't seen, played, or heard whatever the subject is within five years, it's your own damn fault and no one is under any obligation to protect you from anything. You've had the time to catch up, and dictating that the form of the conversation revolve around your ignorance is... if nothing else, at least a little bit rude.
This. There's a statute of limitations on spoilers.

After this amount of time, if you haven't either A) played the game already, or B) had it spoiled a hundred times over the last decade, then you really shouldn't be in a thread like this. If's quite obvious that you don't give a shit about the game or its story, or you would already know it one way or another. Even "waiting for PC' doesn't count, because the game's been available on PC for fifteen years. Just because Steam suddenly has it in 2013 doesn't change that fact.

Now, on the topic... I'm honestly past caring at this point. Sure, I wouldn't mind playing through it again, but in this day and age, it's a bit of a clash to be playing a 1080p character made of seventeen polygons in front of a 320x240 background. The most I can hope for is that it will sell well despite people like me, to show that this particular game in the series really is quite popular, and that it would sell even more if they'd actually give it a full next-gen refresh.

The spoiler was in the fucking commercial for the game and is on the back of the box of the PC version. It's less a spoiler than princess peach being in another castle in SMB.

So I can't get past the first screen because for some reason the game is acting like there is a key stuck on the keyboard (even when I try to use a gamepad).

Basically unplayable. Sweet.

Really?? Haha that's pretty bad in itself. I played this game so much 15 years ago but I don't think it should be spoiled for people new to it.

NeoGAF actually has instructions for spoiler etiquette, and the age of the game isn't mentioned at all. It says that users are expected to use spoiler tags everywhere except threads "specfiically marked as post-game discussion" and "threads about the sequels to existing games." Now, obviously Final Fantasy 7 is technically a sequel, but I think we can agree that the spirit of the guideline here refers to series with a continuous story. As the FAQ says, you shouldn't be reading about the second one if you haven't played the first one; that is your fault.

Unless you completely eschew games from older generations, there are undoubtedly countless old games you haven't played and would not want spoiled for you. New people are born every day, and classic games find new players every generation. Right now there's a thread in OT about Lolita by Vladimir Nabokov, a book that's almost sixty years old, and it's full of black bars. FF7's Steam release will introduce the game to innumerable gamers who either hadn't gotten around to playing it or were too young to play it when it came out. Why spoil the game for them when it's so easy to avoid? The game's age and your own laziness are not reasons with which I sympathize.

And that is an OT. This isn't an OT. If this were an OT then you would have a point. There isn't anything stopping you or anybody else from creating an OT thread where no spoilers are made.

I have never played ff7 before. Which version should I play on - my Vita or PC? I notice the PC version doesn't have that polygon jitter that the psx version has. Any major issues with the PC version I should avoid as that is where I'm leaning.

The music sounds worse. Has this odd, "midi" like quality to it. Other than that, no.

Wait you entered the thread without having finished the game first!? You crazy son of a bitch you should be locked up!

Press X on keyboard for win?

I can't really press anything. It's just alternating between 'new game' and 'continue' as if the arrow key is stuck. As far as I can tell, nothing I can press on the keyboard can remedy it. Same with the controller.

Wow, that sucks. I do find the controls on the X360 controller a bit to sensitive, but I didn't encounter your problem. Try disconnecting your keyboard/gamepad and see if that isn't what's causing it.

PS. Also did the whole midgar section yesterday in one sitting, it was glorious. Also replaced the sucky midi music, with the better OST versions. This game still tickles my nostalgia senses like crazy.

Hey guys I really like this Aeris character. I hope nothing bad happens to her!

Edit: I'll probably snag the Steam version during a sale. Finally see what all the fuss is about. Thanks folks.

This is about courtesy people. You guys are acting like you already got yours so why should you care. "Statute of limitations is up for spoilers", BS. It doesn't matter if it's the biggest spoiler everyone knows about, someone out there is going to be ruined in a thread that isn't specifically about spoilers.

All people are asking is to be courteous especially since it seems like most people are looking for drm and mod answers in the thread, not a story, character discussion.

I really like the analogy to the Lolita thread. Though FF7's biggest spoilers are known even to many who never played the game, it'll be completely new to someone. There's no downside to erring on the side of courtesy.

If you can get a hold of the original version, it's the best with a few mods applied. I posted a link a few pages back.

Exactly. It takes a few extra seconds to place tags around it... There are people in this thread who have never played the game.

Just don't be a bunch of dicks. That's all.

"Screw you, you were born too late," in my opinion, should refer only to when you're inconvenienced by pop culture. Today it's hard to reach puberty without finding out who Luke's father is. In that case, you really were born too late. The TV shows and movies that parody the moment are going to screw you. Samus's sex is another example; in the Metroid sequels, it's no secret. You were born too late.

But "Screw you, you were born too late" should not, in my opinion, be used as a rebuttal or an excuse to spoil old stories, 99% of which have not reached Star Wars levels of ubiquity. I strongly disagree with the notion that people who didn't play a game when it was new (too young, wasn't born, wasn't interested at the time) should be inconvenienced by the people who did when it takes so little effort to be courteous.

In gaming it has reached Vader being Luke's father level.

The greatest spoiler isn't even the greatest spoiler, when you think about it. But I won't say what it is because THAT would be so spoilers.

All right, folks, knock it off. THE spoiler of FF7 is part of gaming history and we can't in good faith ban someone for accidentally dropping that one, even in a thread about a FF7 rerelease. But what we can do is ban people being assholes and douchebags.

Not every single aspect of the game has been emblazoned into gaming's collective consciousness and we ask you to be mindful of that. Spoiling the ending in such a cavalier manner is unacceptable, so don't do it. It's not hard to use spoiler tags and you know to use discretion; further, just be considerate of other people. The correct response to, "Hey, that's not nice," is not, "FUCK YOU FUCK YOU I CAN DO WHAT I WANT WHATEVER FUCK YOU," it's, "Okay, I won't do that again." Act like an adult.

If you suspect someone is being an asshole and refuses to yield, PM a moderator.

And if someone posts a spoiler, don't quote it 90 times and go OMG LOL Y'ALL JUST GOT THE BOMB DROPPED ON YALL

I think Aeris is fine but don't spoil the end that really is just being an ass.

Very tempted to buy this but only because of the achievements. I'm such a whore :(

Should I get the Steam Version or the PSN version?(I have a Vita as well.)

I first completed all the psone FF's on a PSP and i don't think it detracted from the experience at all. It's also a great game to play in bed, i'd go with Vita.

7,8 & 9 are great for unwinding with the fantastic soundtracks and lot's of idle exploration to do.

It's sad how I can't pay for this game and play it on my Mac with Steam, but I can download the ROM and emulate it perfectly.

In the PersonaGAF community thread, if people talk about the FIRST persona game's story elements, it's spoiler texted(and the game is older than FFVII for the record). It's just a simple thing to do, and it's not hard to just have some decency.

Honestly, if you can't post in a FF topic without spoiling the story and can't be bothered to tag stuff, then don't post in the thread in the first place. :\

Anyhoo, some of the mods don't work for the game, but the soundtrack is replaceable with no problems, right? I'd buy it if that's the case, but don't want to before knowing 100%.

From what I understand, you can easily mod the music to the psx originals without having to do major mods that disable cloud saves / achievements.

Also, as far as drm goes you just have to use a SE or Facebook account to set it up the first time you play, then dont need to login again afterwards unless you are using cloud saves, right? There is no other DRM present now (outside of steam itself obviously), correct?

If so then when it goes on sale I'll get it for my first full playthrough.

As far as I know that's how it works, yeah.
Tried disconnecting my router earlier today, no login was necessary, it worked offline.

No Securom, no always-online DRM

Not bad.

Hmmm, I want to buy it now...I wanted to start a new game since a while this year and my vacations are coming. I thought you needed to log in the SE account at each boot, but once is...fine to me.

I'm thinking about buying it, but can you mod it if your steam install directory is the normal program files directory?

From what I'm hearing, some had problems with that first login though (connection errors and such).

There were problems with the server yesterday when I tried to play. I could play the game but loading and saving was a hassle as it wouldn't let you load or save locally until the connection timed out and it would take up to 5 mins for it to timeout.

Sometimes it wouldn't even timeout, so I had to cancel out and try again. Apparently you can fix this by disabling cloud saving but I haven't tried that yet and the servers seemed to be working normally today.
