Final Fantasy VII Remake is a multi-part series

So like 10 episodes? Full game will be $500.

Nope. Remember that in original that a lot of Midgar was inferred and not explorable, we only know as much as we do because of all the addon media shenanigans.
It's about context of how much work would go into an area.

To further speculate, part 2 would go to just before Cloud falls into the life stream and part 3 would start right after it.

I'd imagine so.

So now that I've calmed down a bit this is what I think might/want to happen if the game has to be episodic.

The past year or two that they've been developing this game have been working on the overworld and some side content. Considering that the first episode will probably just be the Midgar intro stuff, 1-2 years of development seems like a reaally long time. We probably won't see it in episode 1 for milking purposes, but I think there will be an overworld.

Story wise, I think maybe just some Midgar stuff is currently complete. I think Square really wants the more linear parts of the game to be really detailed and breathtaking.

So now that in my theoretical world the World Map (which, honestly, isn't all that big and impossible when compared to something like Skyrim or Witcher) and Midgar are in development/nearing completion, Square will work on creating and releasing more super detailed story content episodically while also adding more stuff to the overworld like in the original game.

Nomura plz.

First they give us an utterly shitty game.
Then they give us a sequel to an utterly shity game no one asked for.
Then they give us a sequel to a sequel to an utterly shity game no one asked for either.
Then they remove one of the most interesting female characters and replace her with a blonde anime trope.
Then they alter everything about a promising game and replace the director.
Then they cocktease us with a FF 7 remake only to troll us.
Then they fucking hype us only to immediately remind us what a shit show of company they are.

At this point, I would have rather see Square going bankrupt and seeing the IP in the hand of people who actually like games and their player base and not only the color of their money.

Which game is this from? Curious.

Some of you people simply have to be kidding. I sincerely hope the ones seemingly having mental breakdowns are, or the ones claiming this is some how a complete disaster.

Can we please, for the LOVE OF ALL THAT IS NOMURA, WADA OR WHOEVER THE FUCK YOU PRAISE ON THIS PLANET, STOP SAYING SHIT LIKE "This worked with Xenosaga, Telltale Games, Mass Effect, Portal, IDGAF.

FINAL FANTASY VII, is a COMPLETE package. The fans of this game KNOWS what to expect of it. VIDEO GAME SERIES like Xenosaga are games that have been 'episodic' from the get-go. You've got directors, writers, all that shit KNOWING that the game will be a trilogy or whatever. FFVII is NOT supposed to be divided like that. At least the FFVII we know and have played. At this point I don't even fucking know what game they'll actually provide.

I bet this piece of shit will have Genesis and that other shithead I don't care about.

Exactly. Nothing like playing the game you know then, instead of changing discs, you have to wait an unspecified amount of time (and possibly spend another $60) to continue said game. FFVII was a start-to-finish experience, unlike Telltale stuff, .hack, and so on.

But this is 2015, not 1997. Publishers understand that consumers and their money are easily parted, and the episodic approach is one way to effectively extract revenue.

Please angle your tears above me so that I may bathe in them and become immortal.

So long as they do it right, I really don't give a shit.

I have never played the original but I don't understand why you guys are mad. Don't take this the wrong way but you guys actually got your dream game wish fulfilled. So what If square wants to whore out more than $60 from you. If people can pay $60 for destiny on launch, this is no biggie :P
Just take the L and look forward to the game.

Who's stopping people from just waiting until the whole thing is out? That's what I do with episodic games.
I was actually just waiting for this response to my post. I honestly don't even know where to start. To me, it's actually unfathomable to even think that a fan could wait that long - when the content is out and everyone is playing it. It would require the self-discipline of Bugenhagen himself.

Knew it was too good to be true. I doubt I'll get this until all episodes are out and depends on how much insipid DLC/IAP crap there is. No golden age in this scam business.

Look you foolish person. The Hobbit was written as one book. That didn't stop the amazingly talented Peter Jackson from making it a EPIC trilogy of films. That turned out fine right? ....right?

The Hobbit wasn't a long book. It was stretched to make a trilogy, yes. This is a completely different ball game.

Hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahajahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

I'm shocked people trusted modern Square-Enix to get this right. Shocked.

Rewatch the trailer. It fits all too perfectly. Everything shown is from the very beginning of the game with voice acting.

Welp. It does make a lot of sense. I was very surprised that they already had English voice acting, now that I think about it. Still, I'm gonna be foolishly optimistic about it.

Considering how impossible it supposed to be to remake FFVII, what's cheaper for Squeenix?

Release the game in 3 separate parts for each disc... and all the work that would entail..

Or release about 7 split up episodes spread across. roughly, this decade and a bit past.

Just found out about this.

Yeah, it sucks.

I would of been happy to wait a few years for the complete package. Which I think I will now. Next year is stacked so I'm in no rush to play it. Just disappointed in square Enix. Knew there had to be some catch to this!

I don't think the idea that Final Fantasy is a shadow of its former self is all that radical / toxic.

If I'm wrong about this remake not being a disaster, then sweet! I'll certainly be overjoyed. But they don't get the benefit of the doubt by default. They'll have to prove me wrong.
I just find it disheartening how quickly people went from "THIS IS THE BEST THING EVER MADE" to "I WISH SQUARE-ENIX WAS BANKRUPT AND ALL OF ITS EXECUTIVES WERE DEAD"

Is trepidation understandable? Absolutely, yes. But what we've seen so far is fantastic and its method of release isn't going to change that.

It's good to be cautious, but we know nothing about this yet. We know so little about the game, let alone this recent episodic announcement. We don't know how the map is going to be structured, how the pricing will be, how many episodes there will be, how close to each other they will release. The first continent alone could be Witcher 3 levels of big. We don't know.

Optimism might seem foolish to people used to being disappointed by Square, but what they have shown us so far all looks amazingly well done. This one announcement isn't going to diminish the quality of what we've seen nor is it going to take a FULL FINAL FANTASY VII REMAKE away from us, which is better to get piecemeal than not at all. I'm just trying to look at the bright side of things.

You are all basing this on half a sentence in a PR statement with no further info.

Just calm down and stop having a panic attack, christ.

More than the wait for the game, expect this kind of reaction in every. single. thread from people who expect that somehow a game the scope of FF7 in it's entirety was even possible with today's AAA production values, budget and time constraints.

Spoiler:
It's impossible
People wonder why Square really didn't want to make this remake for the longest time.
