Final Fantasy VII Remake: Nomura Confirms Combat is Action Based

Fuck action based FF.

Hasn't been good since turn based games. Thanks Squenix for shitting in the mouth of the cheering fans who've waited for over a decade for FF7 to be remade. The ones who were around for it are the ones who wanted it back. All we wanted was an HD remake not a complete redo with all the actual gameplay fucking replaced. But hey lets put an FF7 branding on the next Nomura pile and see if folks start to like him then.

If I wanted the same exact gameplay as the original I'd play the original.

Eh, I don't mind, as long as its not some weird hybrid between action and ATB because these things almost never work.

You either make it a full Action or a full ATB.

Also, lol at people who think FF are "hard" and "strategic" I love FF but lets be real here, outside of optional bosses, FF never really required strategy. If you have common sense you're good to go. VI, VII, IX, and XII were brain-dead experiences to me in terms of combat. I actually enjoyed VIII's system more, though its an unpopular opinion, that system made me think twice before using my magic and how to utilize it.

I think you're spot on here. FF has never been about strategy outside of spinoff titles like FF Tactics and MAYBE superbosses (though I facerolled all of VII's superbosses in particular using one overpowered tactic which I wouldn't call strategy). I don't understand the people clamoring for a return to turn-based taking this stance, because in general Final Fantasy games that have been turn-based are easy as hell and the most tactical choice you'll make is needing to heal or remove a negative status effect.

I could certainly see someone wanting something slower paced where they can take their time. But tactical? Mainline FF prior to XII is just as much a button masher as KH, it's just slowed down.

If anyone watched the gameplay trailer and thought "well it might still be turn based!", they were just in serious denial and fooling themselves.

Gonna need some blood pressure medication from absorbing all the salt in this thread.

Bring on the action combat!

I think people don't realize just how hard this is going to tank for the many, many people who loved FF7 back in the day (and still do now) but don't care about the rest of Final Fantasy (hint: it's a lot of people)

A lot of people are excited to play an updated or modernized version of the game they played in 1997. Not an entirely different game with "Final Fantasy 7" slapped onto it.

I don't think there's any reason to believe a FF7 remake will tank because they changed the mechanics of the game. If you want to play the old game, it still exists on many, many platforms. Change is good, and I don't think a 1-for-1 remake with better graphics is. The game is dated.

Aww, you think you speak for the fans. How adorable.

inb4 he says he speaks for "true" fans. That'll be hilarious.

It's the same exact conversation that took place when vsXIII changed to XV.

"Action combat doez not belong in MUH MAINLINE SERIES! True fans know thattttt!!!1!!1!! Save it for spinoffs like Type 0 and KH! Time to go rage on gamefaqs!"

And people stamped their feet and screamed for 3 years. Guess what? XV still was action combat, and now VII:R is too.

QQ harder folks. It's not gonna change.

I'm here for the turn-based salt.

Honestly it would be fine either way, and you know you're gonna buy it anyway because its FF7. You're lying to yourself if this is a deal breaker for you.

I dunno, I think the series has had a few good entries since...FF...3?

But also stop treating the fans as a monolithic entity.

It does make one wonder why they went with CC2 after establishing ties with Platinum.

They probably started talking to CC2 around the same time Platinum got started, since this has been in dev for 2 1/2ish years now? I mean I think Platinum have a rep for quick dev cycles. I always found it kinda curious though that after the Remake was revealed, Nomura said that SE and CC2 have different development ethos and they are in constant communication. Like, communication is good but...surely there must've been a better choice? :/

Oh well

It'll sell, but it won't get received well, I'm almost positive of that. The reason quite a lot of people wanted this was heavily nostalgia based, people who haven't bought a game system in years but are interested in one now just to play the FF7 Remake. And these people don't want a fundamentally different game - an expanded on or improved version of the original yes.

But if this ends up being essentially Kingdom Hearts: Final Fantasy VII edition, then FF7R Ep. 1 is going to be the best selling game in the series, and by a significant margin.

I love turn based system and I also like action based combat.I don't want this remake to be old game with new graphics.I also don't want them to ruin my beloved game with copying every aspect of former one.
They have to do one thing(as a whole I mean) though. They must keep original story, ambiance and characters.

NeoGAF's smiling token!
Action combat is fine, but if they use some version of the FFXV engine I hope they can somehow fix the camera. That shit is atrocious! All kinds of zooming in, out, and around constantly. I turned the difficulty down to easy just to make battles end faster.
The engine is UE4 which is the same one KH3 is being made with and Cyberconnect2 is making the bulk of it.

I'm really curious what about FFXV combat people think is the best in the world. We can all name about 4-5 major issues with it.

While we knew it was going to be action based i'm very curious to see how the customization of the materia system is suppose to work in an action game. The magic system in FFXV was the worst thing ever created and hopefully they don't go anywhere near that direction.

Also why are people equating wanting turned-based meaning we want the exact same game with just modern graphics? There's an infinite amount of things that can be changed other than changing the style of battles.

One of my least favorite Final Fantasys and there are plenty of stuff I would change, but the battle system being turn-based isn't one. It's been a long, long time since I played VII, but I remember disliking Chocobo breeding and racing and some materia. I could tell you specifically, but that would require me to play it again.

But that is fine... not everybody needs to like the same things... there are different games with different genre for everybody.

Now you get a game with a huge fan base that expect years to play the game with more modens graphic appeal and says to them they will change the genre of the game that they loved.

Looks to me like give the middle finger to fans... that is what SE did.

I'm not saying that's not fine. On the contrary, I'm saying I understand that this remake isn't for everybody. I feel like it is for me though, because it appeals to me in just the right ways so I'm happy about it, although I am sympathetic to fans who aren't.

I'm intrigued by the legendary Bayonetta. I hope they remake it and turn it into a tactical RPG, though, because I don't care about the fans of the game clearly.

well then you can play that of course, and i probably wont. just the reverse of this situation

Really surprised at the reaction to this given that it's been known for over a year.

I'm not in the "turn-based is old" camp, but I'm not mad about it either. I just hope it's good. My main worry is how they're going to maintain the versatility of the materia system. If they pull that off with action combat we're on to a winner.
totally! action combat is one thing, but if they remove materia then its ff7 no more. then we can riot all we want
