I guess it's just based on what experience you come from. EQ1 players don't see a problem with playing FFXI as it is, but people who played WoW as a first MMO can take some time to adjust to a more "old-school" (not bad) style of play.
FFXI and WoW were both heavily based on the EQ style of game. There wasn't much else to look at for MMO devs at the time. The difference is that the WoW devs were a lot less hesitant to "dumb it down," which, according to several friends of mine, they're still doing.
I guess for me it's like "if you want a quest to do, go talk to an NPC.. duh?" But I guess WoW has set a new precedent in the RPG world.
