I too love the environments... I loved the Okinawa feel.
It was a pleasant surprise to see that Tidus and Yuna were named for Okinawan words (tīda means the sun and yūna a kind of hibiscus flower) and that Wakka's name means 'water' in Ainu.
There are battle formations now that make your characters move around in different ways on the battlefield.
Most the games use BINK, I'm not surprised.

Oh really! Is that why Tidus is pronounced "tea-dus" in Dissidia? I'd always wondered as I'd simply assumed the name was derived from the word "tide"...that makes much more sense now.
The PS3 version doesn't use BINK does it? It's not a bad codec until you see it on bigger screens, then you can notice the pixalation in them.
I know this game's more open and has multiple paths and all the good stuff.
Still, I'm sure that as a sequel to XIII, it will retain some of the linearity that comes from trying to be overly cinematic.
Two questions, and no I'm not trolling; I've just not really heard either way:
1) Are there towns? (Didn't bug me much in XIII, but this seems like it would've been the most obvious fix)
2) Is there an overworld? I miss FF overworlds.
Loved XIII for what it was trying to be, but I'm hoping this one brings back a heavy dose of RPGness.

2) No overworld/worldmap. You travel to different locations using the time gate.

I always pronounced it Tide-us myself. I think it sounds better than Tee-dus, and it just made sense considering the image of him coming out the water and all. In fact, I never even considered Tee-dus being an option until I noticed that's what the voice actors call him in the bonus DVD that came with the game.

Yeah, it's also because the vowel starts off by coming off of a voiceless alveolar plosive /t/ in one onset, and moves into a voiced alveolar plosive /d/ in another onset, causing the vowel itself to become voiced (though it isn't as easy as that when you're talking Optimality Theory, but whatever, I'll stick to crazy Chomskian logic for now). Japanese doesn't work like English because a lot of the kana essentially work into CV or V components called morae. So テ (te) +[ィ (i) + ー(long vowel marker)] = /tī/ in that language... but it doesn't work like that in English, really. That "changing the -a ending to -us" for English sounds like an interesting localization change to me, though. It makes sense.But it is. Words that start with "Ti" in English either pronounce it as in "Tide" or as in "Tits." The only word I can come up with that pronounces it the way his name works in Japanese is "tiki," which is a straight-up loan word. I called him "Tie-dus" until the first English trailer for FFX came out, which had his name pronounced as "Tee-dus."
Never occurred to me that confusion over the pronunciation of his name continued after that, but I guess it makes sense since they never do say his name out loud in FFX.

You folks who "mispronounced" Tidus' name don't have anything to feel guilty about -- "Tidus" isn't a word in any language and was made up for the English translation of the game, so there's no shame in assuming that it obeys the spelling rules for Anglo-Saxon English words.
Had they called him Tida, English speakers would have said it correctly, but it would have sounded very feminine; analogous to Lisa, Mina, Gina, etc. (and FF7's Tifa, come to think of it).
Dark Schala, on the Okinawan island where I'd spent some time before playing this game, "the sun" is tidán (n at the end, and strong stress on the second syllable), so that's what I called the protagonist. That word sounds a lot more like a man's name; does it to you?
